School pride was in the air on September 24th as Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School celebrated homecoming with festivities, including a parade, fair, football game and Hall of Achievement induction ceremony. The day’s events kicked EAGLE PRIDE SOARS - Copiague High School’s off with a spirited parade September 24th homecoming was filled with school that started at Great Neck spirit and excitement. The afternoon continued as the varsity football team took on Centereach High School. Despite their best efforts, the Eagles were unable to defeat the Cougars. During the halftime show, the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School marching band, cheerleaders and step team treated the crowd to rousing performances. The festivities concluded with the district’s annual Hall of Achievement induction ceremony at the high school. This year’s inductees included Class of 1984 alumnus Jim Konen, Class of 1998 alumna Dr. Leslie Marino and Class of 1977 alumnus Craig Stadelman.

Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District dressed head-to-toe in blue, representing unity, on September 28th to celebrate this month’s character education trait: kindness. All grades gathered in the cafeteria for an assembly on kindness, presented this month by Jennifer Kelly’s fourthgrade class. Carrying their painted emoji plates, the students spoke about what kindness means to them and the proper way to treat others.

Each month, Deauville Gardens East guidance counselor Lysa Mullady works with students throughout the school on a different character trait. Students receive “character counts” cards when they are caught showing an act of kindness. Mullady, who added the assembly portion this year, also includes songs and poems in the program, incorporated by the art and music teachers, so students can connect to the character education traits on many different levels.

Signs. They’re everywhere. You need only to look, and take notice. A visit from a butterfly to commemorate a birthday… the timely appearance of a nest of robin’s eggs… a rainbow arching over the sky… There are those who simply appreciate these occurrences as a token of nature at its finest and leave it at that. And then there are those who see it as representative of something far deeper, and more spiritual in nature. Sure, anything can be made to “fit,” if you are so inclined; but there are certain phenomena, if you will, that simply cannot be denied and leave you shaking your head in wonderment. Case in point: I recently found myself driving on Sunrise Highway, as I often

do, when I happened to focus in on the license plate of the vehicle in front of me. It read “RIP PAL.” For those who may not know, I recently lost my grandfather – my “Pal” – as I fondly called him, earlier this year. The odds of that particular combination of letters, traveling in front of me at that particular time, leading up to what would have been his 90th birthday this month… it was pretty mind blowing at the time. As soon as I was stationary, I quickly texted my mom to tell her about my encounter, still incredulous at the coincidence. No sooner did I get out of the car to head in to pick up dinner, when I was met with another “sign.” As I stood on line waiting to be helped, my eyes fell on the nametag of the girl behind the counter, one I had noticed there countless times

before. It read “Ventura” … my grandfather’s last name. Whether it was her first name, last name, I wasn’t certain. But it didn’t matter. What are the odds? Maybe it was just a coincidence. Two, in fact. Within the space of about five minutes. Both having to do with my grandpa. Perhaps just a stroke of luck. But, to me, it was a sign. Of what, exactly, I don’t know. But these subtle reminders of those who have passed on are around us always, if we only choose to pay attention to them. And I do, always. They say signs come to those who believe in them, those who are open to accept them for what they are – whether it provides a moment of comfort or brings to mind a happy memory. We can certainly all use more of those. Anxiously awaiting the next one...

Long Island Rail Road tracks on the Babylon and Montauk Branches will be out of service during switch replacement, concrete tie installation and grade crossing upgrade work for 48 hours on the weekend of October 15–16, and again for 48 hours on the weekend of October 22–23. If you are traveling along the Babylon or Montauk Branch on these weekends, please make note of the following: • Babylon Branch service will be reduced from half-hourly to hourly • Buses will replace Saturday and Sunday train service between Babylon and Speonk both weekends • On the second weekend, buses will also replace trains between Rockville Centre and Wantagh for 8 hours on Sunday evening • Customers should plan for up to 45 minutes of extra travel time • Bicycles are not permitted on buses or Montauk trains these weekends • To avoid delays, consider traveling on north shore branches on these days For more information, call 511, visit mta.info/lirr or pick up the special timetables

Hall of Achievement Continued From 25 from Columbia University and a medical degree from SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn. While working toward her degrees, she took time to participate in a HIV/AIDS awareness program in Tanzania; spent a year working for Dr. Mehmet Oz running a pilot program to bring health education

into city schools and studied epidemiology at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. During her residency, she received numerous awards, including the Perry Research Award, the Barbara Liskin Award and was selected by her peers as a chief resident. She is currently a research fellow in the Division on Substance Abuse

and works on initiatives with the state and city Department of Health to increase access to treatment for addition. Stadelman works at the New York Blood Center as a donor specialist and was previously employed as a phlebotomist at Brunswick Hospital Center. When not at work, he is serving as the fire coordinator for the Town of Babylon and

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Spreading Kindness Students of Alleghany Avenue recently had a visit from Indian-American hiphop artist Nimo Patel. The students have participated in his mission of “planting seeds of kindness” in a

variety of ways and Nimo joined them during a Kindness Assembly and performed some of his original songs. The “Kindness Assembly” supported

the students’ “Nickels for Niceness” campaign in which they collected loose change in support of pediatric cancer.

Blue Skies & Big Wins further illustrate a unified Lindenhurst. To conclude the high school pep rally, homecoming queen and king Shannon Lydon and James Bugelli were announced to the loud applause of their fellow schoolmates. The student council and athletic department coordinated the weekend’s activities. The parade on September 24th began at Fireman’s Park, made its way down Wellwood Avenue and ended at Lindenhurst Middle School. Each class float represented a different comic book. The freshman class represented Superman, the

sophomore class depicted the Incredibles and the junior and senior classes portrayed the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Batman vs. Superman, respectively. At halftime, there were special performances from the school’s marching band, color guard, cheerleading squads and dance team. At that time, it was announced that the sophomore class won the competition with their beautiful float. In the end, the Bulldogs reigned victorious as they shut out the Brentwood Indians 35-0.

When making funeral arrangements, I often hear the grieving family worry about this person or that person. The family worries about how people would find out about the funeral and how they would get to the funeral home in time for the funeral. They worry if they should have visiting one day or two days, or no visiting at all. When asked for advice, I recommend the family to do what is best for them. It is the immediate family that must be accommodated by all others. It is not the obligation of the immediate family who has just suffered the loss of their mother or father or wife or husband that need worry about what everybody else wants. It is everybody else’s job to make sure the immediate family should be accommodated by everyone else and not be worrying about accommodating everyone else’s wishes. Under most circumstances, there isn’t any place in the world that if a person truly desired to come to the funeral, he or she could not get to New York in less than 36 hours. If the family wishes, they can delay the service for a day or two, but it should be the immediate family’s choice and not delayed at the insistence of others. It is difficult enough to cope with the loss of a loved one without worrying about the needs of everyone else. It is not selfish of the immediate family to only consider their needs, but rather it is selfish of others not to consider the needs of the immediate family. After all, when all the rest of the world returns to their normal life, the immediate family must begin to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives.
