Tickets ranged into the hundreds of dollars; but, in fine print, I noticed a line about complimentary tickets being available to students. Intrigued, I contacted the school to inquire if, perhaps, I might pass for a student once

still find myself enjoying some of the perks associated with being an alumna of one of our fine local institutions. It takes a bit of the sting out of being asked for ID when purchasing tickets to R-rated movies. Last year, I received a press invite for an intimate gathering of students at a Q&A with none other than Long Island’s own Billy Joel. Casual conversation, a few funny anecdotes, a verse from a song or two while seated at the piano - it was every fan’s dream to be in that audience of several hundred. The press, as it turned out, was asked to leave after the first 15 minutes of the event, to avoid the flash photography, videography and distraction often associated with a throng of media lined up in the back.

During the week of September 19th, students at Deauville Gardens West in the Copiague School District connected with veterans both near and far. To help the students begin working on their projects for the Town of Babylon’s Veterans Awareness Week Essay Contest, the veterans answered questions and spoke about their time in the military. On September 19th, students in Yolanda Jamiolkowski and Samantha O’Neill’s thirdgrade class and students in Dana Felicetti’s fourthgrade class had the Google Hangout with U.S. Army Sgt. Jose Pagan. He showed Kind Words Kind words do not cost much. They never blister the tongue or lips. They make other people goodnatured. serving in the Air Force. Geackel, who is a Copiague graduate, currently works as the night custodian at Deauville Gardens West. He worked as a chief education and training officer in the Air Force and served 23 years all around the world. Students asked him about his job and some of the favorite places he was stationed. Fourth-graders in
some of the gear he would use while deployed, as well as medals he earned. He talked about how the Army stresses the importance of respect, discipline and teamwork and how the students should use those lessons in their daily lives. Master Sgt. Chris Geackel visited with different classes in grades three through five on Sept. 20 to talk about his time

Murray is a Korean War veteran who loved traveling the world during his four years of service. He served on the USS Wallace L. Lind 703 and was a member of the engineering crew.

On September 26th, the students of Harding Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District took part in a presentation sponsored by PSEG Long Island and the National Theatre for Children regarding energy awareness.
Throughout the 25-minute comedic performance, the students met a slew of characters including junior superhero Nikki Neutron, who was on a mission to stop energy from being wasted all over town by the show’s villain, the Sneaker.
On his quest, Nikki explored with students the four major themes of the show: What is Energy? What are the uses of energy? How is energy wasted? And what are ways to conserve energy?

Students and staff of William Rall Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District started the year off right by celebrating the third annual “Read My Shirt Day,” sponsored by the school’s reading department. The event was held in recognition of International Literacy
Day, which took place on September 8th, 2017. In an effort to promote literacy awareness and school spirit students and staff alike wore shirts donning messages or slogans. In some cases, students made their own shirts in support of the cause. “Our goal is to create
greater awareness, education and understanding on the importance of literacy in our lives,” said reading teacher Lissa Scavone. “It is a day to mark our achievements and be proud of the literacy skills we have acquired in this digital world.”
Recognized for Achievements Lindenhurst High School senior Luke Korzenko was recognized as a Commended Student in the 63rd National Merit Scholarship Program. Luke entered the 2018 National Merit Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. This is an honor bestowed upon students who have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic suc-
cess. Luke placed among the top 50,0000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the competition. He is one of only 34,000 commended students named nationwide. “I extend my hardiest congratulations to Luke,” said Dr. Clinton Grant. “We are very proud of him. He represents everything we want our Lindenhurst students to be…hardworking and
dedicated.” Luke credits his academic success to, not only, his level of determination, but also the support that has been shown to him along the way. “As a student I have always relied on family and my teachers for motivation and support. Their mentorship helps me work hard while balancing all of my interests and for that I am grateful.”
On Saturday, September 16th, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez visited Gilgo Beach to thank the scores of dedicated volunteers who participated in the American Littoral Society (ALS) Annual Coastal Clean-Up Effort at Gilgo Beach. The mission of the ALS is to empower programs focused on advocacy, education and conservation of our precious shorelines and beach areas. For the past six years, the town’s
Beautification Program has partnered with the Long Island Beach Access Group (LIBAG) in coordinating the annual event. Under the direction of LIBAG president Ray Erickson, over 280 lbs. of debris was removed and carefully documented by volunteers from PSEGLI, Copiague Target store, Lindenhurst High School Robotics Club, Robert Moses Middle School Environmental Club, Microchip Technologies,
National Honor Society students as well as local residents and beach-goers. Each year, the amount of debris has declined, which reflects the efforts of environmental stewardship by motivated community members and businesses who value our wildlife and the importance of keeping our coastal areas clean and beautiful. All volunteers receive Certificates of Appreciation from Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer for their admirable efforts.

One of the growing problems with cremation is what to do with the cremated remains (ashes) after the cremation has taken place. The Catholic Church simply states that the cremated remains of the person should be treated by same as the body. Ashes should be placed in an urn and interred in a family cemetery plot or placed in an above ground niche. Each cemetery has its own set of rules regarding cremated remains. One will say that the cremated remains constitute the equivalent of a body. Thus interring ashes in some cemeteries are equivalent in interring a casket. Some cemeteries allow three interments of ashes in each gravesite. Some cemeteries insist on an urn or cement urn vault for cremated remains. Cemeteries in this area have very liberal rules concerning the interment of cremated remains. Each cemetery has a different set of rules and you should check with your cemetery regarding their rules and regulations. The Westhampton Presbyterian Church has a memorial garden where cremated remains can be interred and the name of the deceased can be placed on the monument in the garden. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church has above ground niches behind the church, also in a memorial garden. Calverton National Cemetery provides above ground niches for ashes. Long Island National Cemetery uses small graves which are too near a tree or road to inter a full size casket for interring ashes. Providing both parties agree to be cremated. If only the husband wants to be cremated, the wife does not, then the ashes are interred in a full size grave so that the wife can be buried at a later date. Many people opt to have their ashes spread in the ocean. The law is that the ashes must be spread at a distance of three miles from the shoreline. The reality is there are more ashes on the shorelines than there are in any cemetery. Some people like to keep their loved one’s ashes home with them. There is special jewelry that has been designed so that some of the ashes can be kept in a pendant or key chain or in a ring so that they are always near. Funeral homes are only required to hold ashes for two years. After that time and after proper notification, funeral homes are allowed to inter the ashes in marked graves. However, I have had people come back to me after 20 years and say that Mom has passed and now they need Dad’s ashes so they can be buried together. My reason for writing this column is to make you aware of the fact that something has to be done with the ashes after the cremation takes place.
