Peaceful Activities Students at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District celebrated International Day of Peace on September 21st with a variety of hands-on learning activities. Once a Bulldog It’s been 15 years since I last set foot on the Edward Kienle Memorial Field as a member of the Lindenhurst Class of 2000. Fifteen years of living and learning and building a life based on the foundation set forth in the schools of good old Lindy, from the playgrounds of Daniel Street Elementary School all the way on up to the hallways of Lindenhurst High School. Each year, on Homecoming weekend, I return to the site where it all began – to reminisce, to reflect, and to soak in the autumn sun with some fellow alumni. Funny thing is, I rarely run into

anyone from my own class; mostly faculty, coaches, the occasional younger sibling of someone I went to school with… I suppose the novelty wears off after the first year or two, certainly once college has been completed and “real” life begins. But for me, it is and always will be, home. The field, the bleachers, the school… the crisp fall air that signals the start of football season, Homecoming floats parading down the street and the scent of concession stand goodies wafting through the air. Lindy pride on display in all its green and white glory, indeed. Sure, there is college Homecoming and all the

Leading Off the Year Copiague School District welcomed back students, staff and administrators on September 6th for the first day of the 2016-2017 school year. Eager to reconnect with their friends and meet their new teachers, students entered their respective buildings with their

backpacks stuffed with new school supplies. Principals and teachers stood outside and helped guide students into one of the district’s four elementary schools, Copiague Middle School or Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School. Student orientations during the summer

months eased the transition for many new to the building, and at the upper level grades, teachers helped students navigate the hallways and lockers. Throughout the week, students settled into their new routines and looked forward to an exciting school year.

Wreaths Across America The Lindenhurst High School Class of 2017 is raising funds for Wreaths Across America. A wreath can be sponsored for $15 and will be designated to a fallen soldier. wreaths will be delivered to the Long Island National Cemetery on Wellwood Avenue. The Location ID number is NYLINC and the Group ID number is NY008P. Orders will be taken until November 14th. In December, the members of the class will place the sponsored wreaths on the graves of

Brittney Walsh Memorial Bowling Fundraiser The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund is holding its 4th annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmindale Lanes in Farmingdale on October 22nd. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund is a non-profit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh. On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. Long Islanders as a whole who have viewed the facts of this horrible event on television and through the newspapers have expressed their grief, shock and sympathy. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund has been designed to assist children just like Brittney - young people who excel in academics, push

themselves to give 100% in sports and are active in school clubs. The goal is to provide three high school seniors each year with scholorships to help make their futures a little brighter. In the 18 years of her life, Brittney touched the hearts of so many people with her love, smile and generosity. With your help, she can continue to do so. States Constitution. Just one day shy of the anniversary, the students ratified their own classroom constitution. One by one, the fourthgraders were called to sign their constitution at a table set to replicate those found at Independence Hall in Philadelphia where the original document was

signed. “It is important to have rules,” said student Katharine. “That way you’ll never be confused about what you are supposed to do. You will always know what the good behavior is, so you won’t get in trouble.”

One of the growing problems with cremation is what to do with the cremated remains (ashes) after the cremation has taken place. The Catholic Church simply states that the cremated remains of the person should be treated the same as the body. Ashes should be placed in an urn and interred in a family cemetery plot or placed in an above ground niche. Each cemetery has its own set of rules regarding cremated remains. One will say that the cremated remains constitute the equivalent of a body. Thus interring ashes in some cemeteries are equivalent in interring a casket. Some cemeteries allow three interments of ashes in each gravesite. Some cemeteries insist on an urn or cement urn vault for cremated remains. Cemeteries in this area have very liberal rules concerning the interment of cremated remains. Each cemetery has a different set of rules and you should check with your cemetery regarding their rules and regulations. The Westhampton Presbyterian Church has a memorial garden where cremated remains can be interred and name of the deceased can be placed on the monument in the garden. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church has above ground niches behind the church also in a memorial garden. Calverton National Cemetery provides above ground niches for ashes. Long Island National Cemetery uses small graves which are too near a tree or road to inter a full size casket for interring ashes. Providing both parties agree to be cremated. If only the husband wants to be cremated and the wife does not, then the ashes are interred in a full size grave so that the wife can be buried at a later date. Many people opt to have their ashes spread in the ocean. The law is that the ashes must be spread at a distance of three miles from the shoreline. The reality is, there are more ashes on shorelines than there are in any cemetery. Some people like to keep their loved ones ashes home with them. There is special jewelry that has been designed so that some of the ashes can be kept in a pendant or key chain or in a ring so that they are always near. Funeral homes are only required to hold ashes for two years. After that time and after proper notification funeral homes are allowed to inter the ashes in marked graves. However, I have had people come back to me after 20 years and say that mom has passed and now they need dads ashes so they can be buried together. My reason for writing this column is to make you aware of the fact that something has to be done with the ashes after the cremation takes place. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us at any time.
