90th Birthday Party
Mrs. Caterina Pinello of Lindenhurst recently celebrated her 90th birthday at Mama’s Restaurant in Copiague. On hand to celebrate were her five children - Mateo, Gaetano (Tommy), Anthony, Josephine and Nancy, daughter-in-laws Franca and Grace, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Caterina was sent to hospice in November but thankfully has survived and is doing well today. She truly enjoyed her special day surrounded by her loving family.

During the regularly scheduled Lindenhurst Board of Education community forum held at William Rall Elementary School on September 19th, veteran board member Edward J. Murphy Jr. offered his resignation effective September 12th, 2017. Mr. Murphy has held a position on the board of education since he was first elected in July 1996. Throughout his tenure, Mr. Murphy served in a variety of roles including president and vice president. Mr. Murphy’s resignation has resulted in a vacant seat on the district’s board of education. The board will now consider their options and determine how best to move forward with filling the seat previously held by Mr. Murphy. “We thank him for his years of service and commitment to this district,” said board trustee Edward Langone. “It is with regret that we accept this resignation.”

The community came out in full force to support Copiague School District during its homecoming celebration on September 16th. Eagle pride was soaring as the day kicked off with a parade, followed by a fair, football game and Hall of Achievement inductions. Starting with a parade at Great Neck Road Elementary School, each of the district’s schools, community clubs, activities – as well as athletic teams and musicians – marched down Great Neck Road en route to Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School. Floats from the senior, junior, sophomore and freshman classes also lined the roadway in this year’s theme of “Through the Decades.” The homecoming court – including king Josh Tavares and queen Kathy Rosado – rode atop

Members of the homecoming court were introduced before the Eagles took on the Huntington Blue Devils. Despite their best efforts, Copiague was defeated by Huntington. Later in the evening, Copiague celebrated the 20th anniversary of its Hall of Achievement, inducting four new members into the ranks. This year’s honorees were Dave Colford, Class of 1994; Silas W. Kelly, Class of 1971; Dr. Corinthia Price, Class of 1993; and Ken Urban, Class of 1993.

The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, BACCA, will be hosting it’s annual Harvest Moon Gala on Thursday, October 19th from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. BACCA is proud to be honoring Theresa M. Santmann, this year’s recipient of the Senator Owen H. Johnson Lifetime Achievement Award. The annual Harvest Moon Gala will take place on Thursday, October 19th from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Gemelli’s Bergen Point at Bergen Point, 69 Bergen Avenue in West Babylon. All are welcome to attend this entertaining fundraiser and tickets are $75 per person for dinner and dessert including beer, wine and soda. There will also be musical entertainment. This year’s Senator Owen H. Johnson Lifetime Arts Achievement Award recipient is THERESA M. SANTMANN. Theresa Santmann is a highly successful entrepreneur, inventor and business woman. Theresa is active in her community, having served as President of the Babylon Village School Board, President of the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce and President of the Babylon Village Youth Project. Currently she serves as Vice President of Splashes of Hope and on the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts Board of Directors.

to the community an overview of the proposed bond referendum project. The community will have the opportunity to ask questions on the topic. The proposed project includes basic infrastructure upgrades to all schools throughout the district, as well as necessary enhancements to improve outdated items. Plans include the replacement of some district roofs, windows and existing electrical services, as well as boilers, burners, and fire and smoke alarm systems. The bond also provides for new playgrounds at each of the district’s elementary schools, in addition to renovations to the auditorium seating at the middle school and high school and the replacement of the

existing tennis courts. The high school’s music room would also be renovated, as would the existing bleachers located in the gymnasium of Daniel Street Elementary School. The total cost of the proposed project is approximately $27 million. There would be no additional tax increase to district residents if the bond is approved because the district has existing debt that is retiring. The new debt associated with the proposed bond referendum will essentially replace the old debt, resulting in no additional tax impact to residents. Voters in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District will have the opportunity to vote on the proposal on Tuesday, October 17th, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at their regular polling locations.

A Difficult Day For many, the events of September 11th, 2001 will never be forgotten. For others, like the students of Lindenhurst Middle School and Lindenhurst High School, they must be taught. Several Lindenhurst students had the opportunity to experience the day’s events through literature as they were visited by authors Tom Rogers and Gae Polisner. With the help of the Lindenhurst Memorial Library, Mr. Rogers visited the Lindenhurst Middle School while Ms. Polisner attended several high school library sessions. Both shared with students some stories about their experiences, personal and professional. They spoke about the process of witting and publishing a HALFTIME HEROICS - The halftime show during Copiague’s homecoming book, and also shared the celebration on September 16th included performances by the marching band, varsity details of their respective cheerleaders and step team. The books offer students insight into the day’s events through the perspectives of the characters and their experiences. “There are many books used to teach difficult subjects and we respect kids’ ability to read books that are written in an ageappropriate way about those topics,” said Mr. Rogers. “I realized that that was needed for 9/11. People told the stories of the first responders and the extremely heroic things that happened at Ground Zero, but I thought about what was it like to experience this as a kid. Since I write in the children’s field, I felt that was what I could bring to the subject.” When asked why she felt it was important to write and share her book
with young adults Ms. Polisner responded, “The students have no personal connection to the event and scientific studies have shown that actually reading literary fiction will create more empathy and more connection than nonfiction will.” She went on to explain, “We find that story actually connects students to their history better than anything else does.”

New Website Unveiled The Long Island Radio & Television Historical Society is proud to announce the inauguration of their newly designed and updated website. The website can be accessed at: https://lirtvhs. org/ OUR HISTORY In 1995, it became apparent that the FAA radio station, once the site of the WWI historic Telefunken
radio station, was to be abandoned and destroyed. A movement to save the property was undertaken by Constance Currie and the Sayville Historical Society. Although there was a lot of support, the attempt unfortunately failed after a massive fire destroyed the remaining buildings. What was left was bulldozed along with the antenna fields.
As a result, Constance Currie and Ralph Williams, a renowned radio historian, collector of Atwater Kent radios, and author, encouraged the people who had come together to save the Telefunken site, to create a historical society that would keep the history of Long Island radio alive. The first members were from the Sayville Historical Society, Steuben Society,
Long Island history buffs, amateur radio operators, and radio engineers who had worked in early RCA, MacKay, and other radio facilities. Chartered by the New York Education Department as the Friends of Long Island Wireless History, the historical society eventually became the Long Island Radio & Television Historical

(a) That the Board of Trustees of the Lindenhurst Memorial Library, Lindenhurst, New York (the “Library”), is hereby authorized to undertake a capital improvement project substantially as described in a plan prepared for the Library by H2M Architects & Engineers, Melville, New York, on file and available for public inspection in the office of the District Clerk of the Lindenhurst Union Free School District, New York (the “School District”) and at the office of the Director of the Library, consisting of the renovation of, and construction of improvements and an addition to, the existing Library building located at One Lee Avenue, Lindenhurst, New York and the demolition of the existing structure located at 2527 Lee Avenue, Lindenhurst, New York; and to expend therefor, including the original equipment, furnishings, machinery, apparatus and ancillary or related site and other work required in connection therewith (the “Project”), an amount not to exceed the estimated total cost of not to exceed $14,900,000;
(e) that a Library tax is hereby authorized to be levied and collected in installments in such years and amounts as shall be determined by said Board of Trustees sufficient to pay the principal of and interest on the not to exceed $14,500,000 bonds herein referred to, and such Library tax shall offset and reduce by like amount the school taxes herein authorized. Such Bond Proposition shall appear on the ballot for use in voting at said Special District Meeting in substantially the following condensed form:

They are working with The Campaign for LIHSA, which was created more than two years ago to help raise funds and awareness of LIHSA. Hundreds of pediatric cancer survivors and their family members joined for a day of fun, food, music and inspiration at the fifth annual Les Nelkin Pediatric Cancer Survivors’ Day event hosted by Cohen Children’s Medical Center at Eisenhower Park. A highlight of the program included brief remarks made by young adult ambassadors of the hospital’s “Survivors Facing Forward” program. Spencer Ford, 16, of Queens, was only 2 ½ months old when he was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that forms in the adrenal glands. He was declared cancer-free in 2004 and is now a thriving high school junior. In an emotional speech, Spencer told the cheering crowd, “Seeing all my fellow survivors here reminds me of how far we’ve come. I want to say thank you to everyone who helped get me to my 16th birthday. Thanks to the staff at
Cohen, I not only survived, I thrived.” Danielle Cassar, 21, of Levittown, was just 8-years-old when she was diagnosed with stage 4 Wilms tumor kidney cancer. She was officially declared cancer-free at age 12 and is now an accomplished student. Because of what she’s gone through, Danielle is considering a career as a pediatric oncology nurse. “Cancer created the foundation of my life,” she said. “I’m grateful to be alive, breathing and on this Earth. I am not the same person I was before cancer. I am a stronger, braver person now. Cancer proves miracles happen every day.” Joining in the applause for Spencer and Danielle was Charles Schleien, MD, chair of pediatrics at Northwell Health and executive director of Cohen Children’s Medical Center. When asked about the importance of the day, Dr. Schleien said simply,
“Today is the reason why all of us who work in healthcare come to work each and every single day.” As a leading center of pediatric oncology, Cohen sees over 200 new cases of childhood cancer every year. This results in hundreds of childhood cancer survivors requiring ongoing care. The hundreds of people who attended the day’s program are members of Survivors Facing Forward, a program designed to meet the complex needs of survivors. The day’s event was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Ruth and Harold Nelkin, who lost their son Les to a form of pediatric cancer in 2001. This is the first time the Stair Climb will be held in Nassau County, paying tribute to the 496 Long Islanders who were among the almost 3,000 killed 16 years ago. Of those, 125 fallen FDNY members were from Long Island. “The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation performs extraordinary work providing resources for the families of fallen heroes across the country,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro. “By climbing steps each year, every participant not only raises funds to support the families of FDNY members who made the Supreme Sacrifice, they also ensure those we have lost are never forgotten.”
