with Jamie Lynn Ryan When We Were Young daily “adult” life. It’s funny how we think we have it all figured out when we’re younger; no one can possibly offer us any insight that doesn’t match our own. We skate from one year to the next, until we eventually have to decide what to do with the rest of our lives. And even then, we have that cushion of college, the ultimate in years spent “finding” yourself. And really, all these years later, has any of us truly found what we thought we were looking for back then? I recall one teacher in high school who constantly warned us that, as many “friends” as we had collected through those formative years, there would come a day when less than a handful would remain. “Two, maybe three, tops,” he would say. “Just you wait and see.” Impossible, we all scoffed, as we remained confident that all those whom we spent the majority of classes and extracurricular activities with would always be by our side.

It wasn’t immediate. In fact, there were many friendships I maintained throughout college and even beyond. But, with each passing year, the list grew smaller. This is not to say that we would be incapable of picking up where we left off on any given day; but it’s not the same. Gone are the days of constantly talking on the phone, making plans to catch up, replaced instead by an occasional text message, a vague reference to “grabbing dinner” one of these days - and there it generally remains. If anything, this realization only confirms that I should have fully appreciated those school days as they were unfolding. How young and innocent we were, how little we knew of what was to come in the years that have since elapsed… how precious that time truly was. Here’s to all those students living those years as we speak. May they always appreciate them the way I have now learned to in hindsight.

Another Year Underway The weather was a mixture of sunshine and storms, and the emotions were a mixture of excitement and anxiety as staff and students returned for the first day of school in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District. The first day of school was not only the start of a new academic year, but for many in the district, it was the start of a new chapter of their lives. Kindergarten students entered classrooms for the first time, leaving

behind the security of their parents. Sixth-graders entered the middle school and were introduced to the idea of changing classes and getting lockers. For the first time, they carried with them the Acer Touch Screen Chromebooks, provided to them by the district as part of the inaugural 1:1 Chromebook Initiative commencing this year with the members of the Class of 2028. Ninthgrade students officially became “high-schoolers” and the 12th-graders

experienced the last “first day” of their Lindenhurst education. When asked what he was interested him the most in middle school, incoming sixth-grader Michael D’Amato said, “I’m looking forward to meeting new people, changing classrooms and working on the new Chromebooks.” When asked what he was most excited about in kindergarten, young student Nicholas said without hesitation, “Playing on a playground!”

To usher in the 2017-2018 school year, Copiague School District’s faculty, staff, board of education members and administrators gathered prior to the start of school’s opening day at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School for Superintendent’s Conference Day on August 31st. After reconnecting during a welcome back breakfast in the library, the staff gathered in the high school’s auditorium where

Copiague School District Board of Education President Michael Greb addressed staff and offered well-wishes for the new school year. To give staff a sense of the amount of work completed over the summer, Copiague School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon presented a slideshow featuring an overview and update on the capital projects. “There is still a tremendous amount of work to be done,” she said.

“With some patience and flexibility, we now all have the opportunity to work in improved facilities.” Dr. Bannon recognized Don Oliver, plant facilities manager for the district, with an unsung hero award for his role in the bond projects. After a presentation of the service awards for 20, 25, 30 and 35 years in the district, faculty returned to their respective buildings to prepare for the upcoming school year.

Budion has been a faculty member at Copiague School District since 2004, working as an ESL teacher at Walter G. O’Connell

Copiague High School until 2005. From 2005 to 2009, she worked as an ESL teacher at Copiague Middle School. In 2009, Budion was named the districtwide coordinator of ESL and foreign language. Budion holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Hofstra University and a Master of Science in teaching English as a Second Language from St. John’s University. Lindenhurst High School ~ 2003 On the day of September 11th, it began like all the others, By mid-afternoon, tragedy struck, and all men became brothers. When the planes hit and lives were lost, it was a shot through the heart, But patriotism took control and everyone did their part. It seemed like a horrible movie, all the fire, dust and smoke, It was reality just the same, when America began to hope. Innocent passengers and heroic firefighters lost their lives, Women lost their husbands and grown men lost their wives. When it occurred, no one chose to believe it was true, But every American began to bleed Red, White and Blue. America grew stronger from this tragic day, to aid the ones who suffer, America is a country we live for, we die for, because we love her. Hearts and courage were plainly shown by all the volunteers, To do what they could to eliminate all of peoples’ fears. Firefighters valiantly fought to save the lives of some, The fact that America grew together, this war is already won. In the midst of ground zero, where debris and dust will cover, What America truly stands for, is what we all discover. It’s not just a name, it’s not just land, it’s not why we are here, America is the air we breathe; it’s something we hold dear. The pride for our country came out that month, to deal with the unbelievable, And the fact that everyone banded together seemed so inconceivable. Girls became women and boys became men, to take on this emotional fight, The gift of freedom cannot be stopped; it’s our most amiable right. On the day of September 11th, the statement of glory and hope was cited, After this tragedy, the States of America truly became United.

When we lived in much simpler times, the immediate family decided who controlled the funeral service. The order of who controlled the funeral was the following: First and foremost, it was the spouse who decided on the method of final disposition, cremation, burial, church service, etc. If there was no spouse, it was the children over 18 of the deceased who decided, and usually they agreed with each other; if the individual was not married, the parents made the decisions; if no parents, the brothers and sisters; and last on the list were aunts, uncles, or cousins. If there weren’t any living relatives or executors of the will, the Public Administrator made the decision. The Law has changed. NYS Public Health Law 4201(2) provides for the designation in a written instrument of a person who shall control the disposition of the remains of a deceased person. Under Public Health Law 4201(3) the written instrument must be signed and dated by the decedent and the agent and properly witnessed. Now, understand I am not a lawyer, but my understanding of this law is that with the proper form, an individual can appoint someone other than his or her spouse to have control over their final disposition. For instance, a person who never divorced can appoint a significant other to control their final disposition. A person who lives with a domestic partner can appoint that person rather than his or her family to have control of the final disposition. A person who has married for a second time can appoint his or her children as agents for their funeral. If it is your intent to have someone other than your immediate next of kin to have control of your final disposition, or if you want a specific child, parent, or sibling to be in absolute control of your funeral--speak to an attorney and fi ll out the necessary paperwork. Then I would suggest taking it to an attorney for review. Keep in mind that giving someone control of your final disposition may very well include giving them financial obligation of paying for the funeral expenses.

Incoming sixth-grade students experienced their first taste of Lindy Pride as they attended orientation at Lindenhurst Middle School held on August 29th and 30th. The students and parents were invited to roam the halls so as to familiarize themselves with the layout of their new school. Principal Frank Naccarato gave a presentation in which he reviewed the school’s policies and expectations of the incoming class. Providing Hope On September 22nd, the Hemendinger family of Amity Harbor, will walk as a family, step by step, to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. Each step up the mountain will represent the family’s upward journey as they have overcome a 10year battle with eating disorders. Reaching Mt. Kilimanjaro’s summit will symbolize the family’s recovery and freedom from the eating disorders.

In 2005, Nancy and Gerald’s twin teenage daughters were diagnosed with eating disorders. For the next 10 years, the family’s reality was one based in fear—fear that their daughters would die from their eating disorders. Would they still be alive at their 16th birthdays? As morose as that sounds, that is the reality of being parents or a family member of someone with an eating disorder. Suffering with an

eating disorder is like being engulfed into a smothering darkness. It is a tug of war between hiding in the shadows and being isolated by the illness, while loved ones try to pull you back to life. The only way out of the deep, dark hole is to battle through and climb up to recovery. One step at a time. The family’s hope is to help those suffering with eating disorders by raising money for

research in prevention and evidence-based treatments. Their goal is to raise $19,341, which is one dollar for every step they take above sea level towards the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,341ft). The contributions will go directly to the National Eating Disorders Association’s Feeding Hope Fund for Clinical Research, which provides grants to top-level researchers in the eating disorders field.

Thirty million people in this country suffer with a clinically significant eating disorder at some point in their lives. Eating disorders also have the highest death rate of any mental illness. For most people suffering with eating disorders, recovery does not happen overnight. Recovery is a slow and painful process fraught with trauma and uncertainties. But fueled by hope, recovery can be an upward journey towards

the summit of healing and great freedom. The family has raised close to $3,000 and is facing an uphill battle, however, they believe no matter how difficult life challenges are they have the ability to overcome and reach their summit.
