The new Main House headquarters of the Village of Lindenhurst Volunteer Fire Department, located at 225 South Wellwood Avenue, will be officially dedicated and open for business on Saturday, September 12th. Mayor Thomas Brennan and Fire Chief Michael DeGregorio have announced that the project is nearly complete and will be ready for full occupation by the dedication ceremony. “I cannot be happier than the way this project turned out” stated Mayor Brennan. “After years of planning and decision making and nearly two years of construction, we have finally completed the biggest single project in the history of the Village of Lindenhurst. This Fire Department Main House will last a hundred years and help to provide the firematic and rescue services we need in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner. I commend everyone involved in this project and thank the Lindenhurst community

Summer’s Swan Song By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And there it is. Not two days into September, and the autumn zealots are out in force, proclaiming the “end” of summer to be upon us. Never mind the fact that the calendar still calls for a full three weeks of the season. Nope. Pack away the bathing suits, close up the pools, pay no mind to the warm radiance of the sun. Fall has arrived. Clearly, I’m not thrilled by this rush to transition. While I can appreciate the glory of autumn in all its splendor, I’m pretty sure that I recall there being many who spent the better part of last winter counting down the days to summer. What happened? Had

your fill of beautiful beach days? Grown tired of sunlit evenings and family barbecues in the backyard? I can understand the school year dictating some sort of routine for those still beholden to a bell schedule; but for the rest of us, there is simply no excuse to not savor these remaining weeks. “Summer vacation” may be over, but for those of us who haven’t been fortunate to take advantage of it, this is the prime time for long weekends and late afternoons spent soaking in the last rays of sunshine at the beach. The best part? While everyone else is off returning to his/her regularly scheduled

programs, the rest of us are left to enjoy the solitude. Not a bad tradeoff. If there is anything we have learned in recent years, it is that Mother Nature has infinitely more impact on our lives than the calendar year. We have had hurricanes at Halloween, snow for Thanksgiving and 70º days leading up to Christmas. You never can tell. But, in this case, the calendar says summer and the weather concurs. Savor it. Grab your bathing suit, pick up a few hot dogs and kick back in a lounge chair. Autumn will wait. In fact, I’m pretty sure it hasn’t even arrived yet.

Making Lemonade from Lemons Lindenhurst Middle School Students who are participating in the Extended School Year (ESY) Summer Program housed at Daniel Street School have been exploring their entrepreneurial skills as they constructed an operated a lemonade stand. The project began as students researched and created their own recipes using measurements and following directions, and then graphed their favorite

lemonade flavors. They discussed the economic concept of supply and demand, set prices for their product and reviewed concepts such as identifying coins and values as well as how to make change. Together the young entrepreneurs designed and constructed the stand and created materials to advertise and market their product. In the end they served lemonade and

also served as examples of appropriate social behavior to their younger ESY peers and customers. “This was another opportunity to provide hands on learning,” said teacher Kristine Chimenti. “Not only to build on the skills they’ll need for the work they do in school, but to reinforce actual life skills. Each student picked their own job responsibility and ran their business successfully.”
