It’s that time of year again, that period of transition between seasons that seems to sneak up on us so quickly, yet stretch so luxuriously over the month of September, giving us the best of both worlds; the last lingering rays of summer sunshine mixed with the brisk chill of autumn air, ushering in pumpkin harvests and apple picking and all the holiday seasons which follow. What better time of year to appreciate all that nature has to offer, to savor the sunsets while looking ahead to the foliage, to dip your toes in the ocean one

last time while unpacking the fall wardrobe – and maybe shop for a few new accessories. It is a time for new beginnings, and for endings; for the start of the school year and the final days of summer leisure. Sure, every seasonal transition has its own benefits; but there is something about September… something uniquely magical about the twilight of summer and the golden glow of autumn that exceeds them all. The start of the 20162017 is not only a new beginning for the students of the Lindenhurst Union Free School District, but also a new beginning for Dr. Grace P. Chan, who was appointed Assistant Superintendent for Business effective September 15th. “As the Assistant Superintendent for Business I will work tirelessly to ensure that the Lindenhurst UFSD has the fiscal soundness to provide the foundation for its students to succeed in

a global setting,” says Dr. Chan. Dr. Chan joins the Lindenhurst family by way of the Port Washington Union Free School District where she held the position of Assistant Business Administrator for seven years. She also served as the Port Washington Adult Education Coordinator, district purchasing agent, systems administrator for finance manager and the chairperson of the district’s nutrition committee. Additionally, Dr. Chan held the position

of Assistant Business Administrator at the Valley Stream Central High School District and East Williston Union Free School District. Prior to her work in education, Dr. Chan worked as an Assistant Vice President at Spear, Leeds & Kellogg, executive planning tax accountant for Oppenheimer & Co., Inc., as well as a senior tax accountant, staff accountant and field auditor. Dr. Chan received her Doctorate in Executive Leadership from Fordham University and her certification as a School Business Administrator from C.W. Post University. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, diabetes affects nearly 26 million people - 8.3 percent of the U.S. population. More than 18 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes and it is estimated

that seven million people have diabetes without any knowledge that they are afflicted with the disease. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic lower limb amputations and new cases of blindness among adults. It is a major cause of heart disease and stroke and the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. Overall, the risk of death among people with diabetes is about twice that of similarly aged individuals without the disease. It is estimated that 35 percent of adults aged 20 and older have risk factors that make them pre-diabetic.

Cremation Practices In The Catholic Church

Reprinted from Our Lady of Perpetual Help RC Church’s October 27, 2013 Bulletin I thought it might be helpful to remind you of some information concerning the Catholic Church’s teaching and viewpoint on the practice of cremation. As you know, the Church does permit the practice of cremation as long as it is not being done as a direct contradiction to Catholic belief in the resurrection of the body on the last day. “Cremated remains” is the preferred term which gives more dignity to the mortal remains of the Christian, rather than the slang term “cremains.” The cremated remains may even be brought into church and the Funeral Mass may take place in the presence of the cremated remains if for some reason cremation takes place before the Mass is celebrated. However, the Church has some very specific rules concerning the respect and dignity to be accorded to the cremated remains. Article 417 in the Order of Christian Funerals tells us this - please take note of this very carefully: “The cremated remains of a body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they come. This includes the use of a worthy vessel to contain the ashes, the manner in which they are carried, the care and attention to appropriate placement and transport, and the final disposition. The cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium. The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea, from the air, or on the ground, or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent disposition that the Church requires. Whenever possible, appropriate means for recording with dignity the memory of the deceased should be adopted, such as a plaque or stone which records the name of the deceased.” So, to put it bluntly, one must do with the cremated remains what one would do with the body of the deceased: they must be buried or entombed. It is not appropriate to scatter the ashes or to keep them at home, nor is it acceptable to divide up the cremated remains into different pieces of jewelry for the family. I’m not kidding about that last one - the funeral industry will actually offer this as an option, but that is completely against Catholic teaching, and we should not participate in such a practice. Should you be thinking about cremation for yourself or for a family member, please be sure to follow the Catholic Church’s teaching about this practice, and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
