Over 30 minutes later, as I aimlessly wandered the docks, attempting to capture “artsy” photographs of the still-muted surroundings, I wondered if this particular outing had been a colossal waste of time. Here I was, sleepily counting down to 6:03 a.m., when I could just as well have stayed under the covers at home. New beginnings, indeed. And then, just as I was about to cut my losses and head back to my pillow and blanket for the remainder of the morning, I heard a young boy who had been fishing at the other end of the dock with his father exclaim, “Dad, look at the sun! How cool is that?” Shifting my gaze over the horizon, I was shocked to see a huge red ball emerging out of the haze, nearly 10 minutes past “official” sunrise time. As I attempted to capture

the sight before me, I realized that pictures would never do it justice; and so, for once, I simply watched as the red turned to gold and the sun blanketed the bay with its shimmering rays. Too often do we become caught up in documenting a particular event, rarely allowing ourselves the time to take it all in, to truly become immersed in the experience. While one single day may not an entire year dictate, it can certainly set the tone in a symbolic manner; and on this, my 35th birthday, I was heartened to witness the gloom lift to reveal stunning beauty underneath. Patience is a virtue, as is appreciating the small moments, in the hope that they will lead to many more down the road. Here’s to day one being one small step in that direction.

I have always been a big believer in the concept of birthdays as beginnings, sort of personal new years, if you will, for each individual person. Agreement with the United States Food and Drug Administration that encourages innovation by local, state and tribal regulatory agencies to continuously improve Food Protection Programs and conform to voluntary national standards. The application is available in English, Spanish, and Chinese. Suffolk County was the first Health Department in New York State to require mandatory food safety training beginning in 1977. More than 106,000 Food Managers have been certified since the course’s inception. Students who successfully complete the course are issued a certificate that must be renewed every three years. Certificate holders who register for renewal within 90 days following expiration of their certificates are eligible for the two half-day renewal course.

While the online and mobile course content are free, in order to obtain a food manager’s certificate an individual must take an in-person exam at the County Department of Health Services’ Bureau of Public Health Protection in Yaphank. Exams are offered on a regular basis. Individuals who download the mobile application and wish to take the exam and receive a certificate are charged $50, plus a small $0.88 credit card handling fee. The Suffolk County Department of Health Services also offers a free online Food Manager’s Course that satisfies the Food Manager certificate requirement for all food establishments while allowing an individual to take the class at their convenience. The course consists of 20 modules that address various food safety topics, with a short quiz that follows each module. Successfully answering

90th BIRTHDAY PARTY - Mrs. Caterina Pinello of Lindenhurst recently celebrated her 90th birthday at Mama’s Restaurant in Copiague. On hand to celebrate were her five children - Mateo, Gaetano (Tommy), Anthony, Josephine and Nancy, daughterin-laws Franca and Grace, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Caterina was sent to hospice in November but thankfully has survived and is doing well today. She truly enjoyed her special day surrounded by her loving family.

St. John the Baptist DHS (SJB) will welcome back their alumni of the past 47 years on Alumni Weekend. This weekend will be hosted on the SJB campus and show off their recently renovated library and turf field. The Lindenhurst Historical Society launches its new meeting format with a program on Thursday, August 31st, at the Lindenhurst Memorial Library. The Society has added two meetings to its annual schedule in order to provide its members and local residents more opportunities to learn of the rich and unique history of Lindenhurst. This program will pay homage to our link to the Great South Bay as a waterfront community. The history of the baymen of Lindenhurst and the important role the Great

South Bay played in the shellfish industry will be discussed. The program will follow a brief business meeting that begins at 7:30 p.m. The Lindenhurst Historical Home Museum at 272 South Wellwood Avenue, sponsored by the Lindenhurst Historical Society, is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 2 to 4 p.m. Come in for a free guided tour of this charming circa 1915 home. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Councilwoman Jackie Gordon recently presented Vinnelle Grant with a Certificate of Achievement before a Town Board meeting. Grant won a gold medal in the 17-18 year-old women’s 800-meter race at the Amateur Athletic Union

Junior Olympic Games in Detroit, Michigan earlier this month. Supervisor Schaffer and Councilwoman Gordon congratulated Grant for her outstanding athletic performance and wished her luck in all of her future endeavors. In addition to her

first-place finish, Grant also placed fourth in the 400-meter competition for the same age bracket. Her achievements come only weeks after she graduated from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School in June.

On July 23rd, Lindy Cares Youth High School students attended Coalition Academy National Training (CADCA) and Peer to Peer Educator training in Atlanta, Georgia. Students learned how to conduct a Community Assessment and develop strategies to create healthier community environments. Students learned how to assess risk factors and

implement strategies to effect global population level change in an effort to address the serious problems underage drinking and use/misuse of illegal and prescription drugs have created. Peer to Peer education is a major part of the comprehensive approach Lindy Cares strives for in collaboration with our school officials and

community partners to give our youth a voice and empower them through education and training.
