Snapper Derby

The Rotary Club of Lindenhurst, in conjunction with the Village of Lindenhurst, will sponsor the annual Snapper Derby 2017, a free fishing event for children ages 5-12. The Derby will be held at the Lindenhurst Village Marina on Saturday, August 26th. Registration is from 8-9 a.m. Participants will fish from 9 a.m. until noon and must present their poles at registration. The event is limited to the first 300 children that register and includes bait and lunch for each child. Prizes will be awarded from noon until 1 p.m. The boy and girl who catch the heaviest snapper will each receive a bicycle. The child you catches the most snappers will also receive a bicycle. Trophies will be awarded to the second and third prize winner in each category as well.

I’ve always felt my generation existed on the cusp of two worlds. A child of the 90’s, my teen years were spent listening to the sounds of *NSync and Britney Spears and watching T.G.I.F. on ABC

Friday nights. The entire grunge movement passed me by, as did many of the cult classic movies of the time. Twenty years later, I have found a new appreciation for all that came before. Pop culture aside, I feel my particular age group remains the last of the “old school.” We were brought up in an age where technology was limited to televisions and radios, Walkmen and cassette tapes. No one had a cell phone until I was well into college, perhaps a beeper if they were lucky. If you wanted to reach a friend, you called their home and most likely were greeted by their parents, who knew you by name. A night out consisted of being dropped off at the local mall or movie theater, then picked up by those same parents and taken

to a local diner. To say things have changed would be an understatement. Of course, this is the case with each generation, as its members grow and ﬂourish and begin to explore the world on their own. We pick up on elements of those who came before and modify them to fit our constantly evolving view of our surroundings as they, too, evolve on a near daily basis. The hope, in the end, is that we will never completely let go of those things which shaped us during our most formative years, the core values we were raised with. No matter how life may change, no matter how many age brackets we pass through, we must remain true to ourselves. Here’s to 35. Here’s to the next chapter, a fresh page in the old book.

This year’s Hall of Fame ceremony will be held on Friday, September 22nd at 7 p.m. in the FSC Campus Center Ballroom. Don Haworth was one of eight CIRCUS FUN - St. John’s Nursery School students went to the Circus for the their individuals selected into last week of camp! The second point on which I would like to focus is cremation does NOT mean there isn’t any wake or religious prior to the cremation. It simply means that instead of burial or entombment in a mausoleum, the deceased is cremated. But first, you can have a wake if desired, religious services, and a funeral mass before the cremation. While promoting the values that underline the Church’s preference for burial of the body, the Church must exercise sensitive pastoral judgement concerning the choice that nearly 20% of Catholics are making in favor of cremation. Economic, geographic, ecological, or family factors on occasion make cremation the only feasible choice.

There are two points on which I would like to focus in this article. The first is the adamant statement made by the church that cremated remains of a deceased Catholic must be treated the same as the human body, and that cremation is NOT the final disposition. Therefore, some final resting place for the Cremated Remains must be made. The scattering of ashes over land or sea is NOT an acceptable practice for deceased memebers of the Catholic Church. Nor is leaving them in the care of the funeral home nor is it acceptable to keep Cremated Remains of a person should be interred in the ground or entombed in a niche (a mausoleum for cremated remains) in a suitable urn.

Ms. Sprague was born on March 25th, 1936 in Lindenhurst to Nicholas and Elizabeth (McPherson) Koch. She spent her life caring for her family. Survivors include her husband Donal Rodriguez Benitez, her children Raymond Waldman, Debra L. Waldman (Edward Haab) and Lisa D. Sprague. She was predeceased by two sons, Edward R. and Mark W. Waldman. She had 10 grandchildren, 11 greatgrandchildren, two brothers, Albert and William Koch, and her sister Jean Price. The Reverend Cecile Koppmann, Pastor of First United Methodist Church in Amityville, conducted the funeral service at the funeral home, followed by interment at Breslau Cemetery in Lindenhurst. Fourth- and fifthgraders in the Copiague School District’s summer program tested their design and engineering skills as well as their knowledge of the laws of gravity when they launched their bottle rockets on August 2nd outside of Susan E. Wiley Elementary School. Fifth-graders used

two-liter soda bottles, salt, water and an air pump to test their rocket design during launch. Throughout the summer, students learned about the forces of gravity and motion and aerodynamic design while also testing air pressure and how it would affect how far their rockets would travel.

Fourth-grade rocket scientists worked in groups to design their own rockets, which were then ignited and flew high in the sky for all to see. Parachutes helped guide the rockets back to the ground and students tested how their designs fared compared to their classmates.
