Standing Against Heroin The Lindenhurst Memorial Library will hold a rally on Saturday, August 23rd, to bring more awareness to the heroin epidemic in Lindenhurst and Suffolk County. Suffolk County and Lindenhurst have seen the increase in heroin use soar over the last few years, especially among teens and young adults. The rally will be held in front of the Library from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Lindenhurst Memorial Library has engaged in a public awareness campaign, primarily using its online and social media pages, since the beginning of the year. “We’ve reached thousands of people with our virtual resources,” stated library director Peter Ward. Standing Up For The Homeless protecting the vulnerable while encouraging their independence and selfsufficiency,” said Suffolk County Department of Social Services Commissioner John F. O’Neill. “While we are able to assist many of our homeless clients through our Client Benefit programs, the Stand Up for the Homeless event is intended to educate and serve the ineligible or recalcitrant visible homeless with informational referrals, community based resources, and items utilized while homeless. The Department of Social Services is proud to be beside County Executive Bellone, St. Joseph’s College and our community based partners in presenting this event.” As has been done in the past, Long Island Cares and Island Harvest will provide attendees with bags of food, while an additional food drive will be coordinated by The Patchogue Lions Club. St. Vincent de Paul will coordinate a clothing drive. Free transportation to and from the event will be supplied throughout the day from multiple locations around the county. Last year, more than 70 vendors offered free services to more than 400 individuals and families, but we are expecting many more this year. Community Shows Support This past weekend Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez were in attendance for Kayla’s Country Fest – a fundraiser to benefit Kayla Vinciguerra, a local 17 year old girl battling a variance of Dandy Walker Syndrome. Kayla was diagnosed with the rare brain condition at the age of 5 and relies

completely on others for care. The event to support Kayla and her family was held at Fireman’s Memorial Pavilion in Lindenhurst and featured raffles, children’s attractions, line dancing and live music from country groups such as Rattlesnake Dawn and Stagecoach. A portion of the proceeds were also donated to Angela’s House, which supports families

On July 18th, Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc., presented a check in the amount of $5,000 to Susan Solomon, Chief Executive Officer, New York Stem Cell Foundation, at a special gathering in East Hampton. The grant will assist the NYSCF in its continuing research into finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease using manufactured stem cells. The grant came from part of an anonymous donation that ADRC recently received. This was the second research study the organization has funded. On June 26, ADRC presented a check in the amount of $3,000 to Dr. Irving H. Gomolin, Chief, Division of Geriatric Medicine, Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola for his study on how the removal of Namenda from the marketplace

The summer solstice opens upon her arrival, evaporating the morning’s dew. The rays of sun awaken by her movement, comforting the Earth with her warmth. All the living turn their heads to bask in her warm embrace. The plants mature in her wake, learning the meaning of life. The menacing clouds take over, their footsteps in sync. Like soldiers they march on and on, without pause. They throw spears of light down showing their force, watching for reactions. Some mortals cower in fear, while some dare to stand against it. Like an olive branch extended, tendrils of pinks and purples streak the sky, tearing the blue. Good wins over evil, a predetermined win. Like a spell cast everything lies tranquil, waiting to dance with the stars. Her sudden temper flares, rolling down her back in waves. Her teardrops comes in waterfalls, mingling with the mundane. Fierce is her reign, until scolded by Father Time. Like a child in the corner, she loses her grip. At the end, summers right hand man, sets in a fiery blaze.

On July 17th, a presentation titled “Alzheimer’s Disease What You Need to Know” took place at the Jewish Center of the Hamptons in East Hampton. Guest speakers included Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC), and Susan L. Solomon, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, and Dr. Scott Noggle, Charles Evans Senior Research Fellow for Alzheimer’s Disease, The New York Stem Cell Foundation. In her presentation, Ms. Malack-Ragona discussed the facts and myths surrounding Alzheimer’s disease. Other topics included the warning signs of AD, updates on local research and national research, the essentials of long-term care planning and how ADRC can assist local families. Ms. Solomon and Dr. Noggle updated those in the audience on the latest research involving stem cells in finding a cure for AD. In addition to her work with NYSCF, Ms. Solomon is a founding member and current President of NYAMR (New Yorkers for the Advancement of Medical Research) and a member of the Strategic Planning Committee of Empire State Stem Cell Board. She has received the New York State Women of Excellence Award, the Stem Cell Action Leadership Award from the Genetics Policy Institute and the Brooke

Ellison Foundation’s Triumph Award. Dr. Noggle, who is also NYSCF Vice President of Stem Cell Research, is an expert in the derivation of human stem cells and neurons. His research interests include applying new advances in pluripotent stem cell biology and cell reprogramming to the creation of human models of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s Disease, for therapeutic applications. Dr. Noggle previously managed the TriInstitutional Stem Cell Initiative Derivation Core facility at The Rockefeller University. The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to accelerate cures for major diseases through stem cell research. NYSCF focuses on translational research in a model designed to overcome the barriers that slow discovery. She wanted to pay for a direct cremation without any services or viewing and she did not want to discuss it with her children. She wanted to make sure that she would be cremated before her children could get here from out of state. I suggested she first discuss this matter with her children. She said it was only her decision. I then asked her what she would do if heaven forbid one of her children died and if they were cremated before she could say good-bye. She simply said she would never talk to her daughter or son in laws again. She then looked at me picked up the papers put them in her pocketbook and said I will be back after I discuss this matter with all my children.
