Residential Repair Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro is pleased to inform local senior citizens about town-based programs designed to help them maintain and stay in their homes. Both the Babylon and Huntington programs offer free craftsmen who are available by appointment to provide simple home repairs and installations for residents aged 60 and older. Many services can be provided, with the exception of those that require the skills of a licensed craftsman. “Owning and maintaining a home can be a tremendous physical and financial burden,”

Legislator D’Amaro said. “However, these programs make it easier for seniors to stay in the homes that they have lived and raised their families in for their entire lives.” Eligible residents must reside in the Town of Babylon or Town of Huntington, own their own homes and live alone or with other seniors. Program volunteers provide simple maintenance and repair services like cleaning gutters, fixing faucets and installing specialneeds hand rails and smoke alarms. Clients are responsible for the cost

of the materials but the installation and repair work is free. Interested residents can get more information and request appointments by calling Babylon at 631.422.7680 or Huntington at 631.351.3253, ext. 4002. “These convenient programs are specifically designed to provide the kind of work that will help seniors keep their homes from falling into disrepair,” Legislator D’Amaro said. “I urge all eligible local seniors to take advantage of this great free service.”

Village Visitors Former Lindenhurst Mayor Fred Kienle and his wife Joan, now retired and living in Virginia, recently visited Lindenhurst and toured the Village Museum located on South Wellwood Avenue.

The Kienle’s were greeted by Mayor Michael Lavorata and Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle. Mayor Lavorata said “what a pleasure to greet and spend some time with the Kienle’s.”

Fred Kienle served as the Lindenhurst Mayor from April 1988 to 1996. Mr. Kienle also served as the Chief of the Lindenhurst Fire Department.

As often as I think I am paying way too much to live in my one bedroom apartment, when I take a look at the pristine grounds surrounding me, I realize I wouldn’t have it any other way. Nearly five years later, my little haven is quite completely furnished, and I have accumulated enough seasonal decor to last a lifetime, maybe two. Closet space… well, that’s another matter entirely. To think I have managed to fill every square inch of available storage in such a short span of time; well, it’s really pretty impressive (said she sheepishly). First item on the autumn “To Do” list: purge those closets, drawers and unreachable shelves of anything unnecessary. Consolidate, donate; whatever it takes to create a little more

breathing room. And stay away from those sales, more importantly, or we’ll be right back in the same boat a few months down the line. Perhaps my favorite space of all, though, is my little outdoor deck. While the view consists mainly of a parking lot and other surrounding apartments, I have made it my mission to fill the area with plants in every corner, twinkly white lights, solar garden ornaments - and of course my aqua-colored Adirondack chairs, the perfect accessory for all seasons. Many a summer day has been spent lounging here, listening to the sounds of birds chirping in the nearby tree, squirrels scurrying to and fro and watching the sun’s glow rise and fall as the hours pass. Living on Long Island… it ain’t for everyone, to be sure but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

“The Church earnestly recommends that the pious custom of burying the bodies of the dead be observed; it does not, however, forbid cremation unless it has been chosen for reasons which are contrary to Christian teachings.” Although cremation is now permitted, it does not enjoy the same value as the burial of the body. The Catholic Church strongly prefers that the body of the deceased be present for its funeral rites since the presence of the body most clearly brings to mind the life and death of the person. Therefore, the recommendation of the Bishop’s Committee recommends that cremation takes place following the funeral litergy. “The cremation remains of the body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they came.” This includes a worthy vessel to contain the ashes, the matter in which they are carried, the care and attention to approprate placement and transport, and the final disposition. Cremation is not the final disposition of the deceased. The Church plainly states cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium. The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea--from the air or on the ground--or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent disposition the church requires.
