Last time I checked the calendar, it was August. Not back-to-school, not Halloween, and certainly not Christmas. And yet, if you look in the stores these days, you would think it was time to start digging out the decorations and making those shopping lists. I’m all for preparation and not waiting until the absolute last minute, but isn’t this all a little much? When I was a student in school, I didn’t consider it the “end of summer” until the end of August, as Labor Day approached. The beginning of August meant that summer was still only half over, with

just over a month of fun in the sun remaining. Plenty of beach days, baseball games, outdoor concerts, BBQs… But for parents and teachers, I suppose this isn’t the case. It’s all about the mad dash to get back into some sort of routine. Of course, nowadays, my routine is pretty much the same throughout the year, summer or winter. But still, I try to revel in the slightly laid back atmosphere that this season brings. Instead of driving home in the dark to sit on the couch in front of the TV, the added daylight hours provide some motivation to check out one of the many waterfront dining options

on Long Island, or perhaps attend one of the free summer concerts featured at the area parks. (Just don’t forget to check the weather forecast before heading out!) It’s August 6th. AUGUST 6th. Absorb it. Savor it. Live it. Stop checking the days off the calendar in a manic countdown to the next socalled marker of time… time that, before you know it, will have passed, un-enjoyed. So put away the Christmas lights, hold off on the pumpkin picking and don’t pack the bathing suit away quite yet. Relax. You’ll have plenty of time for all that in a few months. But not now.

The organization raises public awareness and fills the shelves of local food banks through this annual event comprised of sculptures made entirely of nonperishable cans of food. “Through the spirit of competition, we are excited to engage the A/E/C community in our shared mission to fight hunger here in our region,” said Tracy Lobdell, Executive Director, Canstruction® Long Island, Inc. “We are especially happy to welcome back our past teams, and look forward to welcoming new organizations and schools in this year’s competition.” Registration is open

Since 2007, Canstruction® Long Island has held its annual competition where teams of design and construction professionals, college students and middle and high school students led by architects and engineers, showcase their talent and creativity by creating giant, selfsupporting structures out of cans of non-perishable food. Student Teams are mentored by professionals in the architecture, engineering, design and construction fields, which provides the younger students with exposure to these potential career fields at an early age, and gives the older students an opportunity to develop relationships with professionals that they can possibly intern or interview with in the

future. The structures are on display to the public for 10 days, after which the cans are donated to Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank to feed the more than 300,000 Long Islanders that are affected by hunger and/or food insecurity. Attendees are asked to bring one can of food for admission to the exhibit to also be used cast their vote for the “People’s Choice” Award. U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand recently announced $176,850 in federal funding for Lindenhurst Fire Department and $308,750 in federal funding for Orient Fire District. The money was allocated through the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG).

Lindenhurst Fire Department will use the federal funds to purchase approximately 30 selfcontained breathing apparatus. The Orient Fire District will use the federal funds to purchase a new tanker to replace their currently outdated tanker from 1972. The tanker will hold 2,500 gallons of water. “This much-needed

federal funding will provide the Lindenhurst Fire Department and the Orient Fire District with the resources needed to purchase critical firefighting equipment like selfcontained breathing apparatus and a new tanker,” said Schumer. “First responders are our primary line of defense and this investment will

MarineMax Lindenhurst announced recently that the MarineMax Fishing Team Six will be competing in the Babylon Tuna Club 57th Annual Invitational Tournament, August 7th through 10th. This event is a part of the MarineMax Saltwater Series. The series consists of more than 30 local tournaments that a MarineMax store either sponsors or competes in the event. Team leader, Captain Kevin Graffagnino, will be fishing with his team on a new Sailfish 320 Center Console with a special team graphics treatment. The tournament begins with a Captain’s Meeting and buffet dinner Thursday, August 7th, beginning at 7 p.m. There is three days of fishing from August 8th through 10th with inshore and dayboats starting at 4:30 a.m. and weighing in by the 7 p.m. each day.
