Beach Party Sendoff

n June 24th, Alleghany Avenue Elementary School third graders celebrated the end of the school year with a beach-themed party in the school’s courtyard. The third graders dressed in their best beach gear, played volleyball, had water balloon fights, danced and ate snow cones, chips, candy and cupcakes. All of the third graders had an amazing time! Ode To The E Train By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let me begin by saying that I absolutely love New York City. And by New York City, I mean Manhattan. None of this five boroughs nonsense. The City is one borough, in my estimation. Traveling to it, well that’s another animal entirely. Trains are all well and good, when they’re running on time. Or aren’t derailed by some vague “track condition” west of Jamaica. At rush hour. Of course, this particular scenario occurred during the one time – literally, one and only time – I attempted to commute into Manhattan during the evening rush. Everything was on or close to schedule, until it wasn’t. And then came the crackling,

completely unintelligible announcement over the train’s PA system, mumbling something about “apologize for the inconvenience” and “all passengers must disembark.” My friend and I looked at each other incredulously. This is why we don’t commute to work in the city, seemed to be the simultaneous thought. As we made our way to the exit, passing row upon row of oblivious passengers who apparently hadn’t heard – or comprehended – the command to exit, the mass confusion was evident. Now what? Where do we go? What do we do? Subway. Ugh. Here’s the thing. I am perfectly capable of picking a train line, determining which stop to get off at, which platform to wait on… but

subways? Subways require a special skillset. So many letters and numbers and crisscrossing routes. So much congestion. Almost zero chance to sit, or even lean against, a stationary object. Misery. Pure misery. And so the trek began, from one line (an “express” that made about 12 stops) to another, crammed in like sardines. Oh, the joys of commuting during rush hour. Let’s cross that one off the bucket list. {For those inquiring readers wishing to know the status of Buddy, my betta fish, I am happy to report that he recently celebrated his four-month birthday and is still swimming maniacal laps around his bowl.}

Pride Of Lindy The Pride of Lindenhurst Award is presented annually in recognition of an outstanding contribution that inspires pride in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District. The award is given in the categories of community and staff. This year’s Pride of Lindenhurst in the community category was given to Assemblyman Robert Sweeney for his level of commitment and dedication to the Lindenhurst community.

Mr. Sweeney remarked, “It has been an honor for me to serve the community that I’ve had the privilege to live in my whole life. This really means a lot.” Interim Assistant to the Superintendent for Special Education and Pupil Personnel Services, Merrill Zusmer was recognized at the staff recipient of the prestigious award for the work he has done with the district’s special education population. “We all have the same goal to get better every day and together we

will continue to get better.” The awards were announced at the Board of Education Community Forum on June 10th, in the Lindenhurst High School auditorium. At that meeting, Board of Education member Patricia Ames was recognized with the Yale Award and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Instructional Staff, Vincent A. Caravan received the Harvard Award.

Six-year-old James Callaghan achieved unprecedented success when he recently earned Gold, Silver and Bronze medals running track for his Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) team at Our Lady of Perpetual

Help parish in Lindenhurst. This is an amazing accomplishment for someone his age but what is even more significant is that James has been living with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) since birth. Although CF is a life-affecting disorder, James continues to push himself to the limits. James has been very healthy but similar to other CF patients, he struggles during winter months when he gets the occasional cold. He does not let these setbacks keep him from enjoying sports. “Ordinarily, having CF would make it difficult to run but James is very

determined and fast so he runs through the difficult times even he might not be feeling his best,” said his mother, Nicole. CF is a life-threatening, genetic disease affecting approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States. It causes the body to produce abnormally thick mucus, which clogs the airways and leads to life-threatening lung infections. The pancreas can also be obstructed, preventing enzymes from reaching the intestines and breaking down and digesting food. Many CF patients go through most of their lives undiagnosed.

James was first seen by Good Samaritan Hospital’s Medical Director of the Center for Cystic Fibrosis Louis Guida, MD, at three weeks old for follow up care on his newborn blood test which showed a possibility for CF. James had also lost weight during his first few weeks home from the hospital. At one year old, after repeated colds and pneumonia, a sweat test was performed at Good Samaritan confirming a diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis. The sweat test, a diagnostic test for CF, is a painless procedure that measures the amount of

salt in sweat. A high salt level can be an indicator for CF. Good Samaritan is currently one of only two hospitals in Suffolk County to perform sweat tests. James’ mother was relieved to have a diagnosis early so her son could get the care and treatment needed to keep him healthy. Dr. Guida sees James monthly and his prognosis is good. “There is nothing James can’t do. I encourage his love of running which gives him such joy and sense of accomplishment,” said Dr. Guida. “Good Samaritan has been treating patients with CF for the past 45 years. It

has been rewarding to see young children grow into adolescents and adulthood and live an active life despite this condition.” “The team was very fortunate to have had James participate this year,” said Paul Thompson, Assistant Coach of CYO Track program at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. “James is extremely strong for his age and a very fast runner. He poured every ounce of energy he had into each practice and race, doing his part for both himself and the team.”

The service project involves the candidate identifying a need in the community, formulating a solution, acquiring resources, and ultimately executing the solution to make a lasting contribution. For his project, Patrick decided to refurbish the Copiague Youth Council’s (CYC) facilities by repainting the

kitchen area, refinishing the wood flooring, in addition to replacing old worn out tables. Patrick felt that this was an important contribution, as the CYC provides free afterschool tutoring to many local students. “I never cease to be amazed by the contributions that our local Eagle Scouts have made to our community,” said McCaffrey. “Patrick is no exception, as he has truly put himself on the path to a life of service and civic leadership. The excess nitrogen has caused harmful algal blooms, beach closures, destroyed the oncerenowned shell fishing

industry and threatened the region’s ground, surface and drinking water supply. Suffolk County was particularly recognized for the launch of its Single Family Homeowner Septic Demonstration Pilot Program in 2014 where the county selected 19 homeowners through a lottery system to receive advanced onsite wastewater treatment systems with nitrogen removal capabilities at no cost to the homeowner. The systems include free installation, monitoring and maintenance for five years. The County will use these piloted systems to effectively test and provisionally approve systems to be used in additional homes throughout Suffolk County. Reclaim Our Water was recognized by NACo under the association’s “County Resiliency:

Infrastructure, Energy and Sustainability” category as the septic demonstration program met the following criteria: offers new services to county residents by allowing additional wastewater technologies to be installed, upgrades the level of training for county employees, enhances the level of citizen participation in governmental programs, provides information that facilities effective public policy making, and promotes intergovernmental cooperation and coordination by engaging federal state and local officials in the design of the program.
