Copiague School District recognized its finest artists and student achievements during a special ceremony held prior to the June 19th board of education meeting. District administrators, faculty and board members gathered with invited students and their guests in the Copiague Middle School auditorium to celebrate their successes. Chosen by the Copiague Board of Education, the Student Recognition Awards highlight students for their outstanding achievements in their academic, fine arts or community service. They are presented twice a year to a small number of students for their special accomplishments. “Publicly recognizing excellence is our way of celebrating some of the great successes of the Copiague schools’ programs and, at the same time, enabling us to showcase outstanding role models to our school community,” said Copiague School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon. Twenty students were honored during the ceremony, as board members read a brief description from teachers and principals on why the students were chosen for the award. The 2017 Superintendent’s Art Gallery inductees and Fine Arts Festival crowd favorites were on display for the audience to enjoy. Now in its 21st year, the Superintendent’s Art Gallery began when the Copiague art teachers selected several pieces of student artwork to display. Over the years, the collection has grown to provide a showcase of student artwork in corridors and offices in

each of the schools. Each of the framed pieces is identified by a brass plate noting the student-artist’s name, grade level and year the piece was completed. Crowd favorite art pieces – four in total this year

Class Day Celebrations Fifth-grade students throughout the Copiague School District celebrated their academic accomplishments and reﬂected on their elementary school years as they move up to Copiague Middle School in September at their respective Class Day celebrations on June 15th and 16th. Administrators, faculty, parents and invited guests gathered to celebrate as the fifth-grade students marched in to “Pomp and Circumstance.” Student council officers greeted their classmates at each of the ceremonies and remembered the memories

shared over the last six years. Copiague School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon offered words of encouragement for the fifth-grade classes at Susan E. Wiley and Great Neck Road elementary schools, while Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Jeanette Altruda addressed audiences at Deauville Gardens East and Deauville Gardens West elementary schools. At each of the Class Day ceremonies, the fifthgraders were recognized with awards for academic

merit, leadership, principal’s awards, Presidential Awards for Educational Excellence and Educational Improvement, and citizenships awards. The fifth-grade teachers and principals at each of the four elementary schools facilitated the presentation of diplomas. Students also showed off their musical talents by performing a variety of selections, including their elementary class songs for the final performance. Students and guests gathered for a celebration following each of the ceremonies.

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Michael D. Napoli graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San AntonioLackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Napoli is the son of Barbara and Michael Napoli of Babylon, and grandson of Angela and Dominic Cantelmo of Lindenhurst. He is also the brother of Gina Napoli and husband of Ashley Napoli. The airman graduated in 2012 from North Babylon High School, North Babylon, and earned an associate degree in 2016 from Farmingdale State College, Farmingdale.

FIFTH GRADE BREAKFAST - On Monday, June 19th the Alleghany Avenue fifth grade held its annual 5th Grade Breakfast. There was a breakfast buffet, a waffle station and even a breakfast dessert table that included a chocolate fountain to fondue fresh fruit. Students were treated to a slideshow of their year’s events and received their THIRD GRADE PARTY - Mrs. Gallipani and Mrs. Carrig’s third grade class celebrated yearbooks. As the breakfast ended, each student went back to class with a book bag full the last week of school at Alleghany before summer break with a party in the school’s of goodies. An amazing time was had by all! courtyard.

Approximately 150 Lindenhurst High School students enrolled at the school’s Adelphi physical education and advanced swimming classes recently participated in the 11th annual Bulldog Triathlon. The race consisted of an eight-lap, half-mile swim, followed by a five-mile bike

ride and a two-mile run. Peter Moran and Anna Kurianowicz were the first male and female competitors to cross the finish line, with their impressive respective times of 39.07 and 47.20. The first 10 students to complete the event overall were as follows:

FIFTH GRADE GRADUATION - On Monday June 19th, Alleghany Avenue held its graduation ceremony at the Lindenhurst High School. Family and friends came to cheer on the students’ achievements and watch them receive their diplomas. Refreshments were enjoyed in the school cafeteria afterwards.
