As I write this column, just two days from the summer solstice, I am inspired by several seasonal thoughts… Weather. That great natural occurrence that has the ability to singlehandedly cancel any plans you may have made, no matter how far in advance, with no regard for reservations, ticket purchases, how many people you may have coordinated with… When Mother Nature is compelled to bless us with a torrential thunderstorm, blizzard, blistering heat or any other, more serious, natural disaster, you can say goodbye to your beach day. Society. We seem to enjoy our solitude, even when we are among several thousand of our closest friends in a
artery on the Island. Going back to the summer concert scene, if you plan to attend any shows this summer, you had best be prepared to wait, especially as you attempt to exit. Just imagine about 15 lanes merging into two onto Ocean Parkway. I don’t have to – I’ve experienced it more than my fair share already. It’s not pretty. Let’s hope this summer brings its fair share of sunshine (on weekends, preferably, for those of us who work for a living during the week). And if you happen to be in attendance at a concert in the coming weeks, try putting down the phone for a few minutes, focus on the stage and enjoy the moment. Oh, and try to chill getting out of the parking lot. You’re going to be there awhile.

Lindy Scout Honored Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez recently joined with Councilwoman Jackie Gordon and Councilman Tom Donnelly to congratulate Nicholas John Strigaro for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout,

It made perfect sense to hold this show in one of the most noteworthy historic buildings in the area, as these artists are building upon our local

Milestone Honored
Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently participated in the Eagle Court of Honor for Troop 183’s Kenneth Magnuson. This milestone event was widely attended by local officials and civic leaders, in addition to Kenneth’s exceedingly proud family and friends. In order to attain the rank of Eagle Scout, candidates must satisfy numerous requirements,
chief of which is the community service project. For his project, Kenneth chose to assist the priests of Our Lady of Grace Church by repairing and repainting the deck of their parish residence. Successfully completing this endeavor involved a tremendous amount of both elbow grease and organizational skills. Essentially, projects such as these give Eagle Scout
candidates the opportunity to put their leadership skills – which have been finely honed over many years via scouting – to the test in a way that benefits the community. Kenneth passed this test with flying colors, as the priests and staff of Our Lady of Grace Church can now traverse the grounds much more safely.
Councilwoman Jackie Gordon recently congratulated graduates of the Parent Leadership Initiative of the Town of Babylon at a commencement ceremony at Town Hall in Lindenhurst. The Parent Leadership
Initiative (PLI) course teaches parents and community leaders the skills and training necessary to better their community through civic engagement. Councilwoman Gordon, who serves on the Town’s PLI Steering Committee,

The event was widely attended not only by the participating artists, but by the greater community of art enthusiasts as well. This particular art exhibition involved a variety of mediums including oils, acrylics, portraits, mixed media, drawing, watercolors, and pastels. All of the pieces were elegantly displayed throughout the Old Town

30 YEARS OF SERVICE - During the June meeting of the Lindenhurst Village Board, Mayor Thomas Brennan officially recognized Horticulturalist Jonathan Kehoe for his 30 years of service, Clerk-Typist Karen Leonardi and Department of Public Works employee Arthur Toomey for their 25 years of service. GEOLOGY WEEKEND - Lindenhurst Girl Scout Troop 382 had a great time during its Geology Weekend in May. The Scouts visited Howe Caverns for a guided tour and then Herkimer Diamond Mines, where they mined for diamonds, panned for gem stones and made a gem stone necklace. The girls had a terrific time on this remarkable trip!

The Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center recently presented $1,500 scholarships to three exemplary junior volunteers. The 2015 honorees Michelle Blum, Chloe Brett Hoetner and Davian Ramphal - plan to pursue careers that will utilize the skills they have developed while volunteering at Good Samaritan. Good Samaritan Vice President of Human Resources Mark Boehrer expressed his gratitude to this year’s recipients for their academic achievements and commitment to service. “As teenagers today, I appreciate how difficult it is to commit to any volunteer program. It says a lot and credit should be given to these exemplary students for their service to the hospital and community,” said Mr. Boehrer. Michelle Blum, a senior at St. John the Baptist High School, has contributed more than 135 hours to the hospital’s medical records department, linen room, B Unit, gift cart and at the concierge desk and plans to pursue a career in computer engineering as a college student at Manhattan College. “Working in so many areas of the hospital has taught me that all tasks are important and that there is constantly more work to be completed. The memories I have and the skills I developed will remain with me throughout my life,” said Ms. Blum. She resides

has contributed more than 115 hours of service in the hospital’s Ambulatory Surgery Unit. “Volunteering has taught me to take pride in doing a good job, no matter the task,” said Mr. Ramphal. “This experience has helped me grow socially and I am looking forward to using these skills while pursuing a career in biomedical engineering at Northwestern University.” Junior volunteers at Good Samaritan have the opportunity to enhance their personal development and learn skills while assisting the hospital in providing its important services to the community. Scholarship funds are provided by the Central Council of the Guilds of Good Samaritan and through donations received at Good Samaritan’s Guild Thrift Shop, Gift Shop and Captree Café. The medical center has more than 200 active junior volunteers, who collectively contributed more than 3,800 hours in 2014. Between the ages of 15 and 18, they come from 25 different school districts in the vicinity of Good Samaritan Hospital. Pastor Bob has actively served as Chaplain to the American Legion, as Fire Department Chaplain, working with the local PTA and school district, Boy Scouts, Rotary and other community organizations. Bob is married to Ilse, a Radiologic Technologist at Glen Cove Hospital, and they are parents to John, a graduate of Boston University, and Mary, a Sophomore at Emory University.

For his project, Nicholas paved the walkway at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, from the rear parking lot to the rectory, in addition to paving the distance between the Virgin Mary statue and the rectory walkway. In order to successfully orchestrate this project, Nicholas had to secure all the required resources and manage the day to day operations. As a result of Nicholas’ work, the church grounds are much more accessible and enjoyable to all its visitors. “Nicholas has provided a tremendous benefit to the entire Our Lady of Perpetual
Help community,” said McCaffrey. “However, the impact of his dedication and hard work transcends his project, as he has set a very high standard of good citizenship and civic involvement for his peers. I have every confidence that Nicholas will continue to be an asset to the community for many years to come. All of Lindenhurst is very proud of Nicholas, and I wish him the very best.” Nicholas is third amongst his siblings in receiving such a high scouting honor. Nicholas’s brother, James, received his Eagle Scout rank in 2007, and their sister, Caitlin, received her Girl Scout Gold Award in 2006.

Brittney Walsh Memorial Scholarship Presented
The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund recognized three graduating seniors from the Walter G. O’Connell High School. This year’s winners were: Chaukim Peters for Track, Gabrielle Clement for Soccer and Carlos Giaraffa for the Writing Component only. Not long after Brittney’s passing, a fund was set up by a family friend to help with costs. This community-donated money was not used for that, but made into a scholarship fund to help those scholars who share characteristics similar to Brittney. The criteria for the scholarships is simple: 1. The scholar is looking
to attend college. 2. The scholar must complete a 250 word essay on “The funniest thing they ever did” or “The funniest thing they have ever seen” 3. Two must participate in high school sports, one from Women’s Track, and one from Women’s Soccer. 4. The third scholarship is offered to a male or female who completes the writing component only. “These students were able to show that they have what it takes to be a high school athlete, but also have a softer side and write about something funny. We also shared a smile. Smiling is one of the most enjoyable and contagious things, and they don’t
come as often anymore, but these helped,” said Brittney’s dad, Tom, at the Senior Awards Ceremony in June. The Brittney Walsh Scholarship Fund has awarded close to $10,000 in the past three years. Brittney’s mom Cheryl has made it “a personal goal to ensure that a minimum award of $2,500 is given annually to help these students’ future, not only to help with college costs, but to help remind them to make smart choices and not to drink and drive.” For more information or on how to donate, visit www.smile14.org.

Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently participated in the Eagle Court of Honor for Troop 54’s Nicholas J. Strigaro. The ceremony was held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, and was widely attended by scouts of all ages, elected officials, along with the proud friends and family of Nicholas. Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout is a long and challenging process, but one that is extremely beneficial to both the candidate and the community. The most significant component along the journey to becoming an Eagle Scout is the community service project. The purpose of the project is to provide the
