ongratulations to the GU9 Lindenhurst Strikers team! On Saturday, June 11th, they played in the NYCSL State Cup Finals game. They beat out Woodhaven with a 2-1 ending score. The girls played three games in the fall, where they were undefeated. In the spring, games became elimination round games. This group of girls made it to the finals and played with great determination and heart to secure their victory.

hitch, and the sun even managed to show itself for the majority of the journey. Imagine that. Phase two consisted of a quick little stopover at Gilgo Beach – after we both realized that neither of us had ever been there – before heading up to the Northport area for dinner and then to a laser light show at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. And then came the rains. Drenching, sheets of rain, pouring down on the windshield as we made our way down Ocean Parkway toward the bridge. Maybe there’ll be a rainbow, I mused, as I peered through the wipers. Then this detour will have been completely worth it, this trip to the beach on a cloudy day, interrupted by torrential rain, ending with one of nature’s most magical creations… And then, there it was, straight ahead, stretching over Cedar Beach. I looked at my friend and said, “Shall we pull over for a photo op?” Of course. Always time for a quick detour.

There are those who need to have every detail of each day planned down to the last minute, with little room for even the slightest compromise or delay. And then there are those individuals who prefer to fly by the seat of their pants; no blueprint, no nothing, open to whatever adventures might beckon. Me, I would definitely put myself in the former category. Routine is my friend; schedules my muse. There is something about the sense of accomplishment one gets from checking items off a “To Do” list that lends itself to peace of mind. Of course, life itself is not simply one giant “To Do” list. It requires a measure of flexibility and the ability to roll with those punches that may come flying your way. This is where that spontaneity comes into play. Case in point: I recently set out one Saturday afternoon to embark on a belated birthday

celebration for a close friend from high school. The plan – to head to the beach for our first, postMemorial Day outing, followed by dinner and maybe some prime sunset viewing and photography opportunities. “Happy Wanderers” we are, indeed. Of course, no sooner did I pack my beach bag, when the clouds rolled in, the winds kicked up and the sun disappeared behind a deep haze. Perfect sun bathing weather indeed. Alternate plans, anyone? Determined not to let the entire day go to waste, we feverishly started brainstorming, checking weather forecasts, tracking the storm radar and hoping for the best. Instead of heading out to the sand, we parked at Field #5 at Robert Moses and decided to take a little stroll over to Kismet, Fire Island for lunch, wander around a bit, and head back – hopefully before the skies decided to open up with the impending thunderstorm that had been threatening all day. Athletes and student buddies participated in a series of activities and races including the 100-meter race and the discus throw. Faculty, parents, aides and administrators cheered the athletes as they worked to achieve their goals. The student-athletes, who wore neon green T-shirts to showcase their pride in the district, joined in spirited competition against each other and other schools from across Long Island. Each award honoree was presented with a Proclamation Certificate presented by Legislator Gregory during a special ceremony held at North Babylon High School. Matter of Fact Fourth- and fifth-grade students at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District recently participated in a handson science enrichment program that allowed them to explore matter and its relationship to temperature.

Congratulations to the GU9 Lindenhurst Strikers team! On Saturday, June 11th, they played in the NYCSL State Cup Finals game. They beat out Woodhaven with a 2-1 ending score. The girls played three games in the Fall, where they were undefeated. In the spring, games became elimination round games. This group of girls made it to the finals and played with such determination and heart to secure their victory. Seema Tadfie scored in the 1st half, energizing the girls to

bring home the trophy. Woodhaven tied it up in the 2nd half and, with less than 3 minutes left, Olivia Mazziotti scored the winning goal. The team couldn’t have won without its incredible goalie, Ania Lesniewski, and the great defensive team of Tiffany London, Laken Maroney and Alexandra Previti. The strong mid-fielders, Emma Star and Kaitlyn Shotter, always helped feed the ball up to the incredible offensive line of Brooke Delzatto, EmilyGrace Ward, Natalia Justiniano

and Andrea Marquina. All the girls played outstanding throughout the entire tournament games, beginning in the fall, and continued to play hard through this weekend. They demonstrated great teamwork during every game, and the coaches are so very proud of them. All the girls were awarded with medals, and they get to bring home the Cup Trophy to their Lindy hometown. Great job girls!

During the program, science instructor Brian Wallrapp used dry ice to demonstrate its effect on a coin and spoon and students observed the dry ice reacting with water. Wallrapp also showed the students how various minerals found in the sun react to heat. The young

scientists wore light refracting glasses and were able to see rays of light reﬂecting off objects in the classroom. “The students were amazed by the experiments,” said fourthgrade teacher Jennifer Kelly.

To celebrate the success of students in the independent science research program, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School hosted its annual Science Research Symposium. High school science chairperson Renee Locker and class adviser Jean Ann Crespo began the event by welcoming the room of family, students, administrators, faculty, invited guests and members of the board of education and commending the science students for their hard work. Following a video presentation, Tyler Parks, representative from the office of Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre,

presented Locker with a Citation for the school’s science research program. Students individually as well as with their research partner took to the podium to share some key points and highlights about the research they conducted. Throughout the event, Locker acknowledged individuals who have been instrumental to the success of the science research program and helping the students with their research projects. On display were awards and monetary checks the science research students earned from some of the prestigious competitions they attended which include Long Island Science and Engineering

Fair, the Babylon Covantage EcoTech Scholarship Contest, Science Olympiad and Long Island Science Congress. Thirty students from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School were inducted into the Isabella M. Driscoll Chapter of the National Honor Society during a candlelighting ceremony on June 2nd. NHS advisers Clare Nugent and Allison Weller began the ceremony by explaining the significance of the society as well as the high level of achievement the students demonstrated to be inducted. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon took to the podium to afford words of welcome as well as to congratulate the new inductees and their

families on this exceptional honor. “Becoming a member of the honor society is a privilege,” said Dr. Bannon. “By virtue of your outstanding academic performance you are becoming part of an elite group. It is our hope that you take your membership into the honor society seriously and that in the coming years you use your talents and gifts in ways that benefit both you and our community. Congratulations to all of the inductees.” Officers Adrian Chochorek (president), Karla Lopez (vice

president), Mikayla Angel (secretary) and Victoria Kammer (treasurer) spoke about the characteristics that best describe a National Honor Society member, which includes leadership, service, character and scholarship. Attendees then heard from high school mathematics teacher Scott Kuhn who was the guest speaker for the evening. Following the calling of new members by Weller and Nugent, Principal Joseph Agosta led the group in reciting the NHS oath and provided closing remarks to conclude the ceremony.

St. Jude Fundraiser Members of the Deauville Gardens West Elementary School Student Council, under the advisement of Christine Orlando, coordinated a Math-a-Thon fundraiser in their school, which raised $1,963 to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. To prepare for the fundraising program, members of the Student Council worked collaboratively to put together packets. Inside the packets students included a letter for parents, a collection envelope, a prize sheet and a Math-a-Thon Funbook. To encourage their peers, council members presented to thirdthrough fifth-grade classes to explain the program and

how their contributions will make a difference. During the presentation, students watched a short video, led by actors Kira Kosarin and Jack Griffo from the Nickelodeon television show “The Thundermans,” about the inspiring journey of a young boy who went to St. Jude Hospital, received the appropriate treatment and eventually, went into remission. After kicking off their event in early-May, students created a bulletin board in the school’s cafeteria, which displayed their initial goal of raising $500. Fifth-grade council members separated the donations, while keeping a list of participating students’ names. Third-

grade members assisted with ordering prizes for the participants and fourthgrade members distributed the prizes. “They worked so well together, and together they made this event a success,” said Orlando. According to the mathathon.org website, for more than 35 years, the St. Jude MathA-Thon, benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, has been America’s largest education-based fundraiser. To participate, children in grades K-8 ask family and friends for pledges to solve math problems in the St. Jude Math-A-Thon Funbook, developed by Scholastic.

Powering Creativity fostering creativity, critical thinking and problemsolving skills. During the lesson, students learned about the Wright brothers and their goal to build the first powered aircraft. With that inspirational story in mind, third-graders

worked collaboratively and followed step-by-step instructions to create their own motorized model airplane. “The students were so engaged and loved building their model airplanes,” said third-grade teacher Christine Orlando.
