Lindenhurst students participated in the Nassau County Victory Challenge Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged, held recently at the Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale. Athletes and student buddies participated in a series of activities and races including the 100-meter race and the discus throw. Faculty, parents, aides and administrators cheered the athletes as they worked to achieve their goals. The student-athletes, who wore neon green T-shirts to showcase their pride in the district, joined in the spirited competition against each other and other schools from across Long Island. The games were coordinated for Lindenhurst by teachers Karen Parpounas and Courtney Whalley. On June 12th, a ceremony was held at the Lindenhurst Middle School to honor both athletes and Buddies.

Students Honor the Flag Many of the students throughout the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recognized Flag Day on June 14th. Donning red, white and blue, the students of Daniel Street Elementary School honored their flag with a special ceremony in which they sang patriotic songs including “This Land is Your Land,” “The Star-Spangled Banner” and
“Grand Old Flag.” Members of the Boy Scouts assisted in raising the American flag and members of the Girl Scouts and the fifthgrade class shared their Flag Day poetry. Principal Linda Domanico described the history of the flag to students and gave a description of its meaning and symbolism. There were musical performances
from the school’s band and orchestra under the guidance of teachers Phil Riccardi and Al White. The ceremony concluded with fifth-grade student Emma Ramirez and second-grader Alexandra Wysocki performing a special and patriotic duet for the audience of proud students and staff.
SAY NO TO DRUGS - On May 26th, the Lindenhurst School District took part in the
fourth annual “Say No to Drugs, Say Yes to Life” campaign in which the school community banded together to celebrate the benefits of a life without drugs. In a movement spearheaded by the Peer Leaders group, staff and students throughout the district wore matching T-shirts created specifically for the event to illustrate the solidarity shared for the important cause. One Tap shoes laced and ready to go. Costume hung on the doorknob with care. Steps on constant replay in my head {flap, flap, flap, shuffle hop…} all in preparation for the big night, my return to the dance recital stage after a five-year hiatus. Cue the butterflies. I have had a love/ hate relationship with performing for the majority of my twenty years at the studio. On the one hand, there is nothing quite comparable to that moment when the lights come up, the music begins to play and the rush of the moment engulfs you to the point that you simply perform – no overthinking what step comes next, am I smiling too much,

not enough; are my arms graceful, my hands “jazzy”… Of course, there is also that other scenario, that one that plays out in your subconscious the night before – the one where all the carefully rehearsed choreography evaporates from your memory at the most inopportune moment; generally when you happen to be front and center, spotlight squarely on you, smile frozen as you desperately try to ad lib something, anything. I would say I’ve had my share of each extreme through the years. It began with my very first recital at the tender age of six when I flew onstage mid-song, arms flailing, as I tried to catch up with my classmates as
we performed “Somewhere Out There” in our lemon yellow tutus. It ended, some twenty-plus years later, in a “big girl” tutu of silvery sparkle, dancing to “Wizards of Winter,” only this time I made it out for the entire performance. As I write these words, the stage is set – pun intended – for my grand finale tomorrow evening. Two numbers to perform over two acts, including, appropriately enough, the grand finale to “One” from A Chorus Line. One more time in the spotlight, one last night to shine… at least that’s the plan, anyway. Coming Next Week: Curtain Call

FIFTH GRADE PICNIC - On Friday, June 9th, Alleghany Avenue held its annual fifth grade picnic. With a giant blow-up obstacle course, DJ, a bagel and donut breakfast, tons of sweets, including a cotton candy machine, BBQ lunch, a visit from the ice cream man with ice cream ALLEGHANY FIELD DAY - On Wednesday, June 14th, Alleghany Avenue held its for everyone, limbo, conga line, frisbee, football and so much more, all the fifth graders had so much fun! Even the teachers got in on the action playing football and racing through the annual Field Day, featuring relay races, tug-o-war, bounce house relay, pizza lunches, ices, a DJ and more. Even Lee’s Tae Kwon Do was there to give lessons in the gym to obstacle course and doing the limbo.

Biotechnologies As part of their final exam, Advanced Placement biology students at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School were tasked with researching and presenting on different current biotechnologies. In addition to a PowerPoint presentation,
students used virtual reality zSpace computers to design images of different technologies. After the design phase was complete, students printed models of their images using a 3-D printer. Some of the 3-D items generated included a heart,
DNA strands, kidneys, a nose and teeth, which are all representative of biotechnologies such as cloning, heart transplants, tissue engineering, embryonic and adult stem cell research.

The Lindenhurst Board of Education hosted its Community Forum on June 14th, in the high school auditorium where awards were also presented. The Pride of Lindenhurst Award is presented annually in recognition of an outstanding contribution that inspires pride in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District. The award is given in several categories. This year’s Pride of Lindenhurst in the community category was given to Karen Kanavas and Marie Simmons. For 23 years, the two have successfully
directed the Lindenhurst Middle School musicals. Denise Butler, secretary to the superintendent, was recognized as the staff recipient of the prestigious award for the hard work and dedication she has put forth on behalf of the district. Board of Education trustee Edward Langone remarked, “Denise Butler has demonstrated a level of professionalism and knowledge that has earned her the respect of her peers in addition to the administrators and board members she supports.” Also, recognized with a
lifetime achievement award was former mayor Tom Brennan. “I may be a mayor,” said current Mayor Michael Lavorata. “You will always be THE mayor.” During the meeting, community member and board of Education trustee, Sean McNeilly was also recognized with the Yale Award while Harding Avenue Elementary School reading teacher Maria Bohrer, who will retire at the close of the school year, received the Harvard Award.

Lindy Pride The Pride of Lindenhurst Award is presented annually in recognition of an outstanding contribution that inspires pride in the Lindenhurst School District. During a special session of the Lindenhurst Board of Education Mayor Thomas Brennan received the Lifetime Achievement
Award for his high level of commitment and dedication to the Lindenhurst Community. Marie Simmons and Karen Kanavas also received the Pride of Lindenhurst Award for directing twentythree years of Lindenhurst Middle School plays. Deputy Mayor Maryann Wecklere stated, “It has
