“For the tenth consecutive year, the Town of Babylon will salute those who gave so much for our great nation with the Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride,” said Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserves who organizes the Town’s ride and served proudly overseas four times, including in Iraq in both 1990 and 2003 as well as in Afghanistan in 2012. “It is an honor to ride alongside the brave men and women of our Armed Forces once again, and the participation from hundreds of people coming together for such a great cause makes the experience that much more special.” This year’s ride starts at 9 a.m. with a ceremony at Babylon Town Hall and then leads participants through a 25 mile course filled with Town of Babylon landmarks, including Old Town Hall, Robert Moses Bridge, and Overlook Beach, where the riders will be greeted with refreshments and a barbecue for the ride’s closing celebration. Those interested in participating can visit www.soldierride. org/babylon for details. The registration fee is $35 for adults and $30 for children 12 and under; however, these prices are reduced to $25 and $20, respectively, during the Early Registration period which ends on June 16th. Students of Lindenhurst Middle School explored the world from their very own school’s gymnasium during the school’s 13th annual International Day. In small teams of two or three, middle school seventh- and eighthgraders, and sixth-graders in a foreign language club, set up booths that detailed different countries around the world. Students displayed photos and memorabilia and served traditional foods from the countries they researched. They also played music native to these countries. Throughout the day, votes are cast and students are selected as the winner of various categories including Best Food, Best Display Board, Best 3-D and Best Overall. This year’s Best Overall winners were eighth-graders Gabriel Chodon and Dawid Galazka (Poland).

Albany Pre-K Registration

My alma mater, Lindy High School, recently held its senior prom last week, bringing to mind my own end-of-year soirees which took place so many years ago. Our senior prom was, of course, a highlight; even more so for the fact that it was held at the top of the World Trade Center, at the one and only Windows on the World. What a magical night it was, and what an unforgettable time we had celebrating among the clouds, overlooking the greatest city in the world. Often forgotten in the recollections of high school, however, was the equally memorable evening we had at our junior prom. Held at the famed Narragansett Inn, it brought the elegance of our first “real” dance to our hometown, complete with swirling gowns and high heels, and hair and makeup appointments for all on the afternoon of the big event. Remember, at this point,

sweet sixteen’s had yet to take on the extravagance of a small wedding, and proms truly were the formal affairs of the age. Everything down to the smallest detail was coordinated, from corsage colors to jewelry and accessories, to the tiny ﬂowers and rhinestone clips which adorned many of the girls’ hair. The class voted on their pick for “Junior Prom Song” in the weeks leading up to the event, forgoing the more current hits for a classic from Long Island’s own Billy Joel, “This is the Time.” I remember taking pictures beforehand at my grandparents’ house, walking down the big staircase and masquerading in all sorts of corny poses for the camera. This, of course, predated the advent of cell phones and the notorious “selfies” of today; but every single collection of friends had the same standard photo in front of their limo, couples angled inward, corsages on display.

There was something elegant in the simplicity. Junior prom was a bit more casual for our group. Instead of a limo, we carpooled. Instead of any post-prom festivities, we stopped off at McDonald’s on the way home – in the excitement of the evening, it seems no one had really taken the time to sit down and eat. We were too busy taking photos by the grand piano in the lobby, cheering on the prom court…and dancing, of course. I remember coming home that night and sitting up for hours, recollecting every last detail of the evening to my parents, still in my gown and high heels, my hair a little disheveled but none the worse for wear, not wanting the day to end. Sure, senior prom may have had the pomp and circumstance and the expectation of great things; but junior prom, for me, far exceeded all that. It was, truly the time to remember.

Shattered Dreams The Lindenhurst High School Student Council, with the support from Lindy Community Cares, dramatized the consequences of drinking and driving with “Shattered Dreams,” a program that promotes responsible decision-making by high school students regarding drinking and driving. The event included a mock accident scene in which several students were seriously, and in one case fatally, injured as a result of a student’s decision to drive home

after having “just one shot” at a graduation party. The junior and senior classes looked on as various community entities, including local fire, police and EMS paramedics responded to the mock scene behind the high school. They watched as police officers tested and “arrested” their classmate whose decision to have “just one shot” impacted the lives of so many others. On the second day of the event, the students watched Student Council members re-enact a

memorial service for their fellow classmate emphasizing the gravity of situation and reinforcing the message that even one drink can destroy lives. As a culmination to the program, motivational speaker and author, Ed Gerety spoke to students. He encouraged them to be mindful of their decisions. “Live and lead life with gratitude,” said Gerety. “Make positive choices, respect one another, be kind and stand up for your greatness.”

Thousands of New Yorkers are choosing to preplan/ prepay their funeral and burial expenses. In doing so, they recognize that it is smart financial planning and provides great emotional relief for themselves and their loved ones. Preplanning your funeral will allow you to make your own funeral plans, but more importantly, preplanning will spare surviving relatives and loved ones from the emotional burden of having to make decisions at a time of great stress and trauma.

Flag Day is June 14th. A time to display and honor our Flag. With this in mind, I thought I would provide you with information about the use of the United States Flag during a funeral service. The following regulation is taken from the National Flag Foundation, the authoritative body for honoring, caring and displaying the American Flag: “The ceremony of draping the casket with a United States Flag is used to honor veterans, “patriotic citizen”. Upon further investigation I have learned that this has come to mean every citizen of the United States has the right to have his or her casket draped with the United States Flag. Thus firemen, policemen and everyday citizens who were not veterans may opt to have their casket flag draped. However, the family of the deceased who were not veterans must provide the flag and it must measure 9.5 feet by 5 feet.

1. If the casket is closed the entire casket may be draped with the flag. 2. If the casket is half open, the foot end of the casket may be draped with a properly folded flag. 3. If the family does not wish the casket to be draped with the flag, it must be properly folded and placed in the panel of the open casket. 4. The blue and stars are always to be placed over the head and left shoulder of the deceased when the casket is closed and a similar position when the casket is half open and only the stars are to show when the flag is properly folded and placed in the panel of an open casket. 5. Nothing is to set on top of the flag. Finally, if a flag is to be displayed during the funeral on a pole, it is always to be placed at the left of the casket. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilwoman Jackie Gordon to congratulate Conor McGowan, of Lindenhurst, on achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. The Eagle Scout is the highest rank achievable in the Boy Scouts Organization.

For his Eagle project, McGowan, of Troop 183, coordinated the installation of a park bench along the shore of Fellers Pond. In addition, he oversaw the painting of the fence surrounding the 9/11 memorial site as well as the clean-up of the memorial itself. These improvements were funded through a car wash as well
