The Lindenhurst American and National Little Leagues are excited to announce they will be sponsoring a four-day baseball camp for players in grades 7-10. Michael Canobbio, Varsity Baseball Coach at Lindenhurst High School, has developed an agenda which will teach the fundamentals of the game. Drills are designed to improve athletes’ hitting, fielding, throwing, pitching and baserunning. An instructional game will be played each day, and awards will be given for baseball trivia knownledge, hustle, play of the day, key hit, etc. The camp dates are Monday, June 29th, through Thursday, July 2nd. The Gift of Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time. It’s the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. There is always a deadline, a constant reminder of what we have yet to accomplish within a given period. From the moment we are born, there is a schedule to follow, a time frame to adhere to, expectations to be met – rarely a moment of peace. From classroom bell schedules and term paper due dates to newspaper and magazine press schedules, my life has pretty much been one giant revolving deadline from kindergarten on

up. And, while generally on time for such things, my reluctance to be a “morning person,” coupled with a (slightly) over-the-top sense of perfectionism, occasionally creates obstacles, self-imposed as they may be. Sometimes, you just need to take a collective deep breath and let things go. Choose your battles wisely; smile and accept the rest. It’s not giving up. It’s not even giving in. It’s simply making a conscious decision to rise above with an eye on the greater goal, whatever that may be. It’s not always easy. And

for those like me who tend to micromanage and overanalyze, it can be nearly impossible to let go and relinquish control of the day-today monotonies which, together, make up the great majority of life. But once you set the wheels in motion, it’s amazing how truly freeing it is. Simply live and let live. We can only control ourselves; not others, not our surroundings. The sooner we realize this and stop trying, the better. At the end of the day, you might even find you have more time to do the things you truly want to. Imagine that.

A 45th Reunion BBQ for the Lindy Class of 1970 is planned for Saturday, August 1st, at Lindenhurst Fireman’s Pavilion, from 12 to 4 p.m. Cost is $30 for age 21 and over, $25 for under age 21; kids under 5 are free. Gordon Korman, author of approximately 80 books for kids and teens, recently paid a visit to the Lindenhurst Middle School. Throughout the day, hundreds of students gathered in the auditorium for Mr. Korman’s

presentation about the writing and publishing process. During these sessions Mr. Korman recanted how he first became a published author when he was in seventhgrade. Korman held a writer’s workshop for ten seventh

and eighth-grade students who were selected by their English teachers. Mr. Korman walked the students through the creative process of writing a story and each student wrote their own short story with him.

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.
