HELP WANTED

Just Kids, located at the Kellum Street School, is offering limited scholarships for general education children residing within the Lindenhurst School District to attend their preschool program beginning September 2016. Three-year-old classes will meet either from 8:30 to 11 a.m. (morning session) or from 12 to 2:30 p.m. (afternoon session). Four-year-old classes will be held during those time periods as well, however, there will also be a full-day 4-year-old program from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Please note that snacks/lunch will NOT be provided to the students and will be the responsibility of the parents. Parents must also provide transportation. Proof of residency must be provided to Just Kids upon acceptance into the program. Each class will consist of 18 students: nine general education and nine special education. One general education teacher and one special education teacher will co-teach classes, with an aide in each classroom. The program utilizes the Creative Curriculum that emphasizes academic readiness skills and social skills. Students entering the program in September 2016 must reach the age(s) of 3 or 4 by December 1st, 2016. Parents must provide birth certiﬁcate and proof of residency, and all students need a physical exam prior to beginning the program. Must be able to vacuum gravel and plant surfaces; windows a plus. So, some of you may be wondering how my new pal Squeegee the Snail fared. In short, not well. His stay was brief – less than a week, in fact – and quite unsuccessful. While I may have played a role in his untimely demise, I must say he didn’t seem very lively upon arrival. No matter how many times I tried to greet him {read: head-butted his shell repeatedly}, he never seemed to want to come out and play.

I think my Human was upset by this, as she kept muttering something about “crumbs” and what a mess I was making.

Student-athletes from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School were honored at the school’s Spring Sports Awards Night on May 23rd. The evening, sponsored by the Booster Club, was filled with praise for members of the track, baseball, softball and lacrosse teams for their commitment to teamwork, school and themselves. In addition to honoring the most valuable and most improved players, as well as giving out the coach’s award for each team, three special memorial awards were presented to studentathletes for boys lacrosse and baseball. of the Sean Ryan Noonan Memorial Lacrosse Award and Ethan Taveras received the Daniel O’Connell Memorial Baseball Award. The Section XI Gold Key Award, the highest Section XI honor that an athlete can receive, and Golden Eagle Awards were also presented at the ceremony. The Gold Key is awarded to student-athletes who letter in eight junior varsity or varsity seasons in grades 10-12. Painting Like Pollock A select group of 35 Susan E. Wiley Elementary School students in the Copiague School District participated in an arts-ineducation program that allowed them to explore art through visual examples and a hands-on project, led by children’s art book author and painter Joyce Raimondo. Sponsored by a Pollock– Krasner House grant,

the program began with a slideshow presentation of famous masterpieces. Raimondo encouraged the students to share their thoughts about the different artwork and the types of emotions the piece provoked. Among many other famous artists they discussed, the students learned about Jackson Pollock, an influential American painter and

a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. Known as an “action painter,” the young artists tried their hand at his notorious spatter and drip paint technique. Using popsicle sticks, they selected from a tray of paint colors to spatter and drip on their paper. They continued this process until their paintings were complete.

Mock Trial Held The Town of Babylon Youth Court spent a recent evening participating in a “mock trial,” where members of the Court deliberate over a legal dispute while audience members serve as a jury. The mock trial presentation - The People v. Adrian Vega - focused on the issue of Miranda rights, the theme for this year’s

Law Day celebration. Town of Babylon Councilwoman Jackie Gordon joined Councilman Tom Donnelly, Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, and Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini in attendance. The Youth Court was established in 2006 as a means to reduce juvenile delinquency through

The new contract, which runs through June 30th, 2020, is the result of five years of negotiations between the district and TAL.
