There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours taken out of the weekend to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in
the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully put away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tonguein-cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are

pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple starting their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition is a grassroots organization based in Lindenhurst, New York. www.lindycares.org. Our mission involves creating a safe and healthy community for our youth. We hold community meetings during which we listen to the residents, students and teachers, and work with officials to create an environment to find solutions and answers to the current problems facing our students and youth. One important issue facing Long Island families and people all over our nation is underage drinking and addiction. That is why we have partnered with Richard Schaffer, Town Supervisor and Tim Sini, Suffolk County Police Commissioner, to bring this important public safety message about Suffolk County’s Social Host Laws designed and enforced to protect everyone. Underage drinking is illegal and never appropriate. Studies show that people who engage in underage drinking are more susceptible to alcoholism and early experimentation with drugs. Our mission is to bring awareness to this issue and to help people find the resources they need to deal with the problem. Unfortunately, in our culture, drinking has evolved into a tradition or rite of passage. Movies and shows depict drinking as a way to celebrate the end of great events or wind down at the end of the day, but it is not a pastime for anyone under the age of 21. You can say no, and if you do, you are not alone. Our surveys show that many parents and students are uncomfortable with the pressure of prom season and hosting celebratory parties that serve alcohol after sporting events.
Join Us In Promoting Safety And Wellness This Prom Season. What is the Social Host Law? The primary purpose of the Social Host Law is to deter underage drinking parties or gatherings where adults knowingly allow minors to drink alcohol or alcoholic beverages. The law applies to any adult (including a parent) who is over the age of 18 and knowingly allows consumption of alcohol by minors (any person under the age of 21).
Who can be charged? Anyone who is over the age of 18 who: • Owns, rents or otherwise controls any permanent or temporary domicile, including a home, apartment, condominium, cooperative unit, trailer home, recreational vehicle, mobile home, overnight accommodation at a hotel, motel, campsite or short-term rental property, or other dwelling unit of any kind, including yards and open areas adjacent thereto; and • Knowingly allows the consumption of alcohol or alcoholic beverages by any minor on such premises; • Fails to take reasonable corrective action upon learning of the consumption of alcohol or alcoholic beverages by any minor on such premises. • Notably, this law does not apply to the consumption of alcohol by a minor whose parent or guardian is present and has expressly permitted such consumption; or the use and consumption of alcohol or alcoholic beverages by a minor for religious purposes. What is “Reasonable Corrective Action?” Reasonable corrective actions shall include, but are not be limited to: • Making a prompt demand that the minor(s) stop drinking the alcoholic beverage or leave the premises; and • If the minor refuses to comply with the request, the adult must promptly report the underage drinking to local law enforcement or any other person with greater degree of authority over the minor (e.g., the minor’s parents or guardians) What are the penalties? 1st offense: Fine not to exceed $500 2nd offense and subsequent offense: Misdemeanor – fine up to $1,000 and/or a term of imprisonment not to exceed one year.

Why is this law needed? This law provides a legal basis for holding adults responsible for knowingly allowing underage drinking to occur at a place under their control, whether or not they provide the alcohol.

Other laws regarding underage persons... The New York State Penal Law, the Alcohol Beverage Control Law, and other state and local regulations make it illegal to engage in unlawful conduct with persons under the age of 21. These laws prohibit the sale of alcohol to persons under the age of 21, the purchase of alcohol for someone who is under the age of 21, and address conduct that endangers the welfare of persons of a protected age. Penalties are severe, and in many cases can result in significant fines and/or imprisonment. Help us keep our young community members safe. Reports of a possible overdose, intoxicated or impaired driver, or other emergency should be called into 911 immediately. Illegal consumption of alcohol by minors should be reported without delay. Information regarding future parties where alcohol or other substances will be unlawfully consumed can be called in to the Suffolk County Police Department’s “Cancel the Keg” hotlines. Officers will make a custom notification to the residence to let the homeowners know that law enforcement is aware of the impending party and explain the social host law and the consequences of violating it. Rewards may be available and, most importantly, you may save a life! The Unity of Q and U It was a match meant to be for two letters that always seem to pair well together. The kindergarten students at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District celebrated the unity of the letters Q and U in a special wedding ceremony on May 18th. Since the beginning of the school year, the kindergartners have been
learning the sounds that letters make together and that letters, such as Q and U, appear together in most words. Dressed in their best ensembles, the wedding guests wore Q and U hats and veils to the wedding. The large Q and U cutout letters, held by two students, walked down the aisle as ceremonial wedding music played.
“There will be quarrels but you have to stick together like quicksand to solve any quandaries,” the officiant told the couple before concluding the ceremony. After the ceremony, the marriage celebration continued back in the classroom as guests enjoyed juice and wedding cake. Honoring Aides The 41st annual Teachers Association of Lindenhurst awards ceremony was held on May 15th at Lindenhurst High School. Teachers selected one student from each grade level in every school for recognition. Nominees were selected based upon their levels of responsibility, leadership and citizenship as well as their enthusiasm for education and the academic efforts.
The audience enjoyed a performance by the Lindenhurst performing group Odyssey and then watched a video in which Lindenhurst students shared the ways in which they could “aid the world.” Students then thanked the aides of their school buildings as the Lindenhurst aides were this year’s recipients of ‘The Friends of Education Award,” for their outstanding
contributions to the students of the district. The Geraldine Cuneo Scholarship was awarded to Anna Kurianowicz; the Teachers’ Association of Lindenhurst Scholarship was bestowed upon Elizabeth Mackey; the Joseph Pozowicz Scholarship was given to Andrea Cabrera; and the John Cannestraro Scholarship was awarded to Matthew Byrne.

Beautification Effort Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilwoman Jackie Gordon to congratulate Conor McGowan, of Lindenhurst, on achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. The Eagle Scout is the highest rank achievable in the Boy Scouts Organization.
For his Eagle project, McGowan, of Troop 183, coordinated the installation of a park bench along the shore of Fellers Pond. In addition, he oversaw the painting of the fence surrounding the 9/11 memorial site as well as the clean-up of the memorial itself. These improvements were funded through a car wash as well
as donations from several local businesses. McGowan credits the assistance of many volunteers, scouts, scoutmasters, friends and family members for making his project possible. Supervisor Schaffer thanked Conor for his service to the community and presented him with an official Town of Babylon proclamation.

Covanta Contest Ten students from the Copiague School District were recognized by the Town of Babylon for placing among the top students who entered the Babylon Covantage EcoTech Scholarship Contest during an awards presentation at Babylon Town Hall on May 6th. Under the advisement of Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Science Chairperson Renee Locker and Copiague Middle School Science Chairperson Dr. Daniel Leccese, students submitted an energy or environmental-based science project, through which they carried out an experiment and wrote a detailed scientific paper explaining their procedure and conclusion. Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School student Brittany Faustin placed first among all entrants and earned a $1,000 scholarship for her project “The Effectiveness of the Antibacterial Activity Utilizing Silver Nanoparticles on the Growth of Aspergillus niger.” Other winners from Walter G O’Connell Copiague High School included: Brayan Pena and Osazuwa Eghafona, who
received a $625 scholarship for their project “Doped Magnesium Aluminate as a Viable Basis for Production of Inorganic, Long Lasting, Non-Toxic, Pigments;” Sofie Wilson and Jade Dickenson, who won fourth place and a $250 scholarship for their project “A novel investigation surrounding Geukensia demissa as a probable control mechanism for the invasive species Phragmites australis;” Erhumwunse Eghafona received a $250 scholarship for his project “Falling Temperature on a Species of Tree;” and Claudia Motley took home a $125 scholarship for her study on “Cultural Orientation and its Effects on Secondary Education in Japanese and American Students.” The three Copiague Middle School students each took home $125 scholarships for their projects. Dylan Bedell project was to show how drones can be used to monitor coastal erosion. He used his drone to fly over a shoreline of the Great South Bay and looked at evidence that showed decreasing levels of coast. Olivia Healy examined how different
insulating materials help keeps a home warm in the winter. DaVeyah Williams studied nanosilver and how nanosilver affects pond life. Nanosilver is called colloidal silver and is found in many consumer products with the purpose of killing bacteria. Her project studied how greater amounts of nanosilver decreased the population of daphnia (microscopic pond organism). Open to students in grades eighth to 12th throughout the Town of Babylon, the Covantage EcoTech Scholarship Contest awards scholarships annually to students who create the topranking science projects with eco-tech themes. Through this program, students are encouraged to explore concepts related to sustainability and environmental solutions. “Covanta and Babylon have been exceptional in not only encouraging STEM among our students, but offering an incentive for pursuing science discovery and excellence. Even more noteworthy and distinctive by Covanta is the endorsement of environmental science as an area of focus,” said Ms. Locker.

Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School recognized its finest musicians and artists during the third annual Fine Arts Honor Society Induction on May 22nd. Fourteen students were inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society and 14 students were inducted into the National Art Honor Society in front of administrators, board of education members, friends and family.
Jennifer Pierre-Louis, Copiague School District director of fine arts and Tri-M Honor Society adviser, offered opening remarks about the hard work and dedication of the student-musicians who were nominated for induction to both their school and community. Five points of distinction – scholar, character, leadership, cooperation and service – must be possessed by these
students in order to qualify for the Tri-M Music Honor Society as explained by the society’s officers. They must also receive teacher recommendations, maintain a 90 average or above in music courses and an 85 average or above overall. National Art Honor Society inductees must also receive teacher recommendations, possess a 90 or above average in art classes and submit a piece
of artwork, according to Damin Gomes, National Art Honor Society advisor. Each new candidate for induction also adds signs their name to a canvas, adding their personal touch to a piece of art. Students each received a certificate and pin before reciting the pledge of their respective honor society in unison with their fellow inductees. The district congratulates the following

LIVE Celebration Long Island Volunteer Enterprise (LIVE) is celebrating 25 years of coordinating corporate volunteerism initiatives with a week-long, islandwide volunteer drive from June 3rd-11th, 2017.
