Upon completing a tour of the facility and lunch in the Delegates Dining Room, students acted out a real U.N. session. Each student studied the countries they chose, and were tasked with solving an “international crisis” in similar fashion to the real U.N.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) will be hosting its 5th Annual TeeOff for Our Teens tournament at the Sebonack Golf Club, Southampton, on Tuesday, May 17th, 2016. Seventytwo golfers will have the opportunity to play on one of Long Island’s most exclusive courses, enjoy spectacular views overlooking The Great Peconic Bay and help to support the programs and services LICADD provides to all Long Islanders. Sebonack was the host of the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open. The course opened in 2006 was designed by progolfers, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak and is adjacent to the National Golf Links of America and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. Sponsorships are available and include priority teeoff, two tee signs and your corporate banner display. Individual players are $1,250 or $4,000 for a foursome. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m with plenty of time to practice putting and enjoy lunch before the shotgun start at 1 p.m. Early reservations are highly recommended for this exclusive course. The day will end with a reception at 5:30 p.m., to be followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds from the TeeOff for Our Teens event will directly support evidencebased programs for teens that LICADD currently offers to the community.

LICADD delivers prevention programs aimed at bolstering children and young adults’ self-esteem, conﬁdence and communication with peers and parents, before they are presented with the choice to use alcohol and drugs. Too Good for Drugs, which is designed for children in kindergarten through 12th grade, builds students’ resiliency by teaching them how to be socially competent and autonomous problem solvers. Under the Student Assistance Program (SAP), these resources are available in schools throughout Long Island and continue to expand into new school districts each month. For young people displaying signs of alcohol and drug abuse, Teen Intervene offers a month-long combination of individual and parent-present counseling sessions focused on charting a different direction that includes abstinence and healthier coping strategies. “Long Islanders remain unaware that the number of teens affected by prescription drug, heroin and alcohol abuse continues to rise each day, and the expanding need for services is staggering,” said LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC. “We need our community to become a part of the solution by participating in the Tee-Off for Our Teens and supporting programs that save teen’s lives and restore families.” For 60 years, LICADD has successfully delivered evidence-based programs designed to prevent and treat substance abuse and addiction. LICADD offers crisis intervention, screenings, referrals to treatment and several family education workshops to help Long Islanders struggling with the effects of addiction. Committing to Post Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School senior Mikaiya Moore is bound for Long Island University Post this fall to continue her basketball career on a full scholarship as she works to obtain her college degree. Family members, coaches and district administrators surrounded the talented Copiague Eagles basketball player as she ﬁnalized her

commitment by signing a National Letter of Intent. Among her athletic accomplishments, she was one of 10 athletes selected to the 2016 Newsday AllLong Island basketball team, earned the title of All-County for the 2013, 2014 and 2016 athletic seasons and was deemed the 2016 League 2 Player of the Year. Additionally, she scored a record total

of 1,503 points during her basketball career as a Copiague Eagle. “Congratulations to Mikaiya for being rewarded for all her hard work both on the court and in the classroom,” said Copiague girls’ basketball coach Carole Olsen. “She has an amazing personality and will be remembered as one of Copiague’s elite female basketball talents.”

Dominican Village and North Amityville Kiwanis Club hosted a “Community Baby Shower” where over 75 residents and staff of Dominican Village came together to make this event a huge success. The generosity was stupendous to benefit newborns at local hospitals with essential baby items to help ensure healthy beginnings for the mother and newborn. I am thankful for my mom and dad. They are the water and sunlight to my plant. They’re the only true role models in my life. They pay the bills, put food in my stomach, and put clothes on my back. They are the most important things in my life. I am thankful for my mom. She is the star in my galaxy. She turned me into the nice gentlemen I am today. She fought through mental illness

two times. She taught how to act respectfully around people she puts in charge of me. She is the main reason I love to be alive. Also, if it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be in Pal football. I wouldn’t be able deal with my grandfather’s recent trip to the E.R. I wouldn’t be able to keep going in life. Those are many reasons I am thankful for my mom. I am thankful for my dad. He’s the anchor in our ship. My dad makes

sure that the family is stable. He taught me how to defend myself, to ride a bike, and to be safe on the Internet. He makes me happy when I’m depressed. Also, he tells me what my dead grandfather expected of me. He taught me to be respectful to him and to the elderly. He gives donations to foundations for breast cancer and autism. Those are reason why I’m thankful for my dad.

As I often do when beset with burdens, I took to the wharf down by the bay To view the choppy waters have their way. Five minutes passed, and my concerns began to fade; Nature had spun its magic, majestic and unafraid. Soon I noticed people in cars surround me, Sharing this comfort the scene implored. The Hourglass By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are moments that stay with you. Forever. And people, people who leave an indelible imprint on our lives, one that simply does not fade with the passage of time. How lucky we are to have those memories, those associations. How deeply we should treasure them… Time is the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. It’s a precious commodity, one often taken for granted right up until the moment that it runs out. One day runs into the next – and we

often neglect those things and people we should have paid more attention to along the way. Be thoughtful. Be kind. Be compassionate. Each and every day, to whomever you meet, but mostly to those family and friends who are most important to you. Those are the gestures that will stand the test of time – the gatherings full of laughter and love, the conversations, the greeting cards and gifts, the time spent together. Life is destined to have its fair share of sadness; all we can do is try to minimize the regrets along the way.

Imagine how you would like to be treated, and do your best to emulate that in your interactions with others. It’s the simplest of concepts, really, but its effects are far-reaching. The most important thing is to appreciate those moments – the ones that stay with you – right then, while they are happening. You just never know when it might be the last opportunity. Such is the bittersweet nature of life; the great unknown. May we all be so fortunate to have memories worth treasuring along the way.

As a way to introduce students the fundamentals of Lego robotics while fostering STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education, a group of second-graders at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District were invited to participate in a new afterschool program called Lego Club. Under the advisement of school social worker Lissette Persico and volunteer Steve Persico, students in the club meet twice a month after school to create cars and other

model structures using Lego pieces. Students work independently and collaboratively to create their Lego designs. They follow step-by-step instructions and use their creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to successfully build their structure. Once students construct their Lego cars, they race them, four at a time, down a ramp to see which car travels the furthest. With experience and knowledge in the field of technology, Mr. Persico assists the students as they modify

and change their design in order for their car to travel further. They also discuss balance and the type of car structure that would be the most aerodynamic. “This is really to get [the students] interested and to understand, at an age-appropriate level, the science and physics behind the structures they are building,” said Mrs. Persico. For students interested in exploring Lego robotics, the Copiague School District offers programs at middle school and high school levels.

Evening of Dance Members of the Lindenhurst Union Free School District community recently enjoyed the 12th annual Evening of Dance performances held at Lindenhurst High School. The evening was filled with beautiful music, dancers and costumes. The high school dance program is one of the few on Long Island taught

by an accredited dance teacher, Kristine Lyons, and attracts serious dance students. Donning colorful costumes, the students demonstrated dance genres including ballet, modern, lyrical, jazz, hip-hop and more. The dancers worked hard to present a show that was a varied representation of dancing styles. With

close to 30 performances, they did just that. “I thank all of my students for their passion and dedication,” said Ms. Lyons, who also serves as the director of choreography. “I am moved by their unending drive for perfection, and their ability to inspire me daily.”

Model UN Students of the Lindenhurst High School Model U.N. Club recently took part in simulations acting as member nations in the United Nations at the U.N. headquarters in New York City. Upon completing a tour of the facility and lunch in the Delegates Dining Room, students acted

out a real U.N. session. Each student studied the concerns and philosophies of the countries they chose, and were tasked with solving an “international crisis” in similar fashion to the real U.N. Other students acted as the United Nations Security Council where they drafted resolutions and voted

on how to solve various issues. Aside from the simulation, club members also visited exhibits around the facility that addressed important issues including disarmament, peace and security, and human rights.

College Tour Forty-three sophomores and juniors of Lindenhurst High School recently embarked on a group college tour. The two-day trip provided students with the opportunity to visit a myriad of schools in multiple states and bring about “College Awareness.” During the trip the group traveled to Rowan College and Rutgers University in

New Jersey as well as the University of Maryland and Towson University, also in Maryland. High school guidance counselor Leslie Levy said, “This trip gave our students their first step in the college selection process. Visiting a campus is a great way to gather first-hand information about a college.” Students walked

through the campuses, visited dorm rooms, classrooms and bookstores among other academic and athletic areas. They also listened to presentations about the admissions process and life on campus from admissions staff and student ambassadors. The guidance department hopes to hold similar trips in the future.

In addition to Kevin’s scouting achievements, he has also made the Principal’s List, received Bronze and Silver Presidential Service Awards and took part in a Habitat for Humanity Build in 2015. An Eagle Scout’s service project is the crowning achievement of a candidate’s journey to Scouting’s highest rank. The project must be one that benefits the community, in addition to being planned and managed by the candidate. This process necessarily involves formulating a project idea, determining the required human and material resources and

demonstrating unwavering leadership throughout the process. For his project, Kevin supervised the construction of 14 assorted birdhouses that were installed at Fireman’s Park and The Rainbow Senior Center. The aim of the project was to bring birds to the area to enhance the parks for visitors. “The thoughtfulness, dedication and care Kevin Winston has showed throughout his scouting career is an inspiration to people of all ages,” said McCaffrey. “His Eagle Project to beautify parks for visitors is a great service to our community. I know we will be hearing more of Kevin and his achievements in the future.”
