Check the Calendar So much of life is spent planning, filling in those square boxes on the calendar with appointments and meetings and lunch dates and movie outings. And yet, very little of that time is spent doing things we truly enjoy. Even certain social engagements seem to take on a sense of obligation, of fitting in “fun” simply so that we can check off “reconnecting with old friends” from the neverending to do list. To do, or not to do, that is the question. Sure, there are plenty of things we “have” to do, even if we sometimes lose sight of why. We have been trained, conditioned, to meet the expectations of a society that sees any type of downtime as a bad thing.

If you’re not doing something 24/7, surely you must be shirking some responsibility or another. But what if we simply choose to kick back and relax, to spend our time “doing” nothing – and just leave it at that, no explanation needed. Is that really such a bad thing? When was the last time you slept in, just because? When did you have an entire day with absolutely nothing planned, and no sense of guilt because of it? Leisure does not equal laziness. I recently had lunch with a friend, and this very topic came up, in the context of taking a step back and truly evaluating what it is we want to do – in life as a whole, over the next several

months, weeks, days… even five minutes. How much time is spent planning; yet, of that, very little - if any - is devoted to these questions. We simply forge on, blind to our desires. It’s funny, when you take a moment, the realization kicks in of how few things we do in our daily lives that truly make us happy. Sure, there will always be obligations of one sort or another; but we can frame those with other tasks that are slightly more fulfilling and productive over the long term. The key is figuring out what those are, sooner rather than later. Then you can pencil them in on the calendar.

LIMB DIFFERENCE WALK - In honor of student Aiden Quinn, Alleghany took to the track the morning of Monday, April 17th for the Limb Difference Walk. Students and staff dressed in orange and carried orange balloons in support of fellow classmate Aiden. Great job Alleghany!

On April 3rd, with the help and support of the surrounding community, the Lindenhurst High School Peer Leadership group collected more than $7,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The group coordinated the head-shaving event in an effort to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research. Among

Leakage of urine is not normal but is very common in women. In most cases the problem can be improved. There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise. It is related to the increased abdominal pressure which puts excess pressure on the bladder. It is common in women in the years after childbirth but may also be a problem for cigarette smokers, people with asthma and chronic constipation. It may also be hereditary. The repeated straining movement of the cough or pushing to have a bowel movement weakens the connective tissues. Treatment options include pelvic ﬂoor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic ﬂoor, biofeedback and surgery. (the mesh) that is placed under the urethra to support it like a hammock. The purpose is to prevent the urethra from excess descent with the increased abdominal pressure. Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates. Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable. Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair. The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence. It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency. The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident. Medications are often used. The purpose of

the medication is to prevent the bladder from contracting too quickly to allow more time to get to the toilet. It may also decrease the frequency. Medications are not always helpful, and in many cases, the side effects may be troubling. When medications are not helpful or cannot be

tolerated, other options include Botox injections in the bladder and neuromodulation. It is important to know that the majority of women with urinary leakage problems may be helped if not cured. There is no reason to suffer in silence. Pharmacies have entire incontinence
