Suffolk County Legislators presented the legislature’s Employee Excellence Award to three employees from the Bureau of Chest Diseases at the Suffolk County Department of Health Services for their outstanding work during the March 28th, meeting in Hauppauge. Lourdes Diaz, RN, of Holbrook, Jean Gordon, RN, of Lindenhurst, and Patricia Bergmann, RN, of Sound Beach, were nominated for this recognition program, which is sponsored by Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, by James L. Tomarken, MD, MPH, MBA, MSW, Commissioner, Department of Health Services. The award is intended to commend county employees who excel in handling their duties. The Bureau of Chest Disease staff maintains an active surveillance program for tuberculosis. In his letter of recommendation, Dr. Tomarken says, “Working effectively as a team, these three employees go above and beyond their job requirements, taking care of community residents with compassion, understanding, and cultural sensitivity.” He added, “Their professionalism and dedication protects the public from this serious communicable disease.” The nurses travel throughout the County
making home visits to residents, accompanying tuberculosis patients to doctor visits, traveling to hospitals to reassure patients and make sure they receive the best possible care. They frequently perform these duties outside of normal
business hours. “Our County employees deserve our appreciation and recognition,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Nursing is a truly inspiring, thoroughly rewarding, and noble profession. RNs Bergmann, Diaz and Gordon are

Leakage of urine is not normal but is very common in women. In most cases the problem can be improved. There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise. It is related to the increased abdominal pressure which puts excess pressure on the bladder. It is common in women in the years after childbirth but may also be a problem for cigarette smokers, people with asthma and chronic constipation. It may also be hereditary. The repeated straining movement of the cough or pushing to have a bowel movement weakens the connective tissues. Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, biofeedback and surgery. When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action. Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings. In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates. The sling refers to a piece of material
URINARY INCONTINENCE
(the mesh) that is placed under the urethra to support it like a hammock. The purpose is to prevent the urethra from excess descent with the increased abdominal pressure. Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates. Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable. Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair. The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence. It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency. The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident. Medications are often used. The purpose of
the medication is to prevent the bladder from contracting too quickly to allow more time to get to the toilet. It may also decrease the frequency. Medications are not always helpful, and in many cases, the side effects may be troubling. When medications are not helpful or cannot be
tolerated, other options include Botox injections in the bladder and neuromodulation. It is important to know that the majority of women with urinary leakage problems may be helped if not cured. There is no reason to suffer in silence. Pharmacies have entire incontinence

Fifth-grade students of West Gates Elementary School in the Lindenhurst School District recently participated in the “Trial of Goldilocks,” a curriculumbased cultural arts program written and directed by Hofstra law professor Glen Vogel. The program introduces students to the basic elements of the
legal system, strengthens developing skills such as higher order thinking, sequencing and public speaking and improves the students reading and writing skills. After three weeks of pushin lessons and preparation, the students, donning the costumes of familiar fairy tale characters, act out a
courtroom scene in which Goldilocks is on trial, charged with criminal mischief, trespassing and petit larceny. The judge, a member of the West Gates faculty, and members of the fourthgrade jury hear evidence from the prosecution and defense and delivered a verdict.

On March 29th, the Walter G. O’Connell Industry Advisory Board hosted its first Business Olympics in the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School auditorium. Teams of business students were given the task to remediate and revitalize an abandoned building at 1305 S. South Strong Ave. in Copiague. Four teams of students – BizHub, Eagles on Wheels, Vovola and Revival – presented a variety of innovative ideas during their 10-minute presentations, followed by a five-minute question and answer session from judges. Each team created a Google presentation, commercial for their business and promotional materials to present to the judges. Judges included Industry Advisory Board members from local community businesses, Copiague School District administrators and faculty and Copiague Board of Education members. The winner was Team Revival for their gym/spa combination. This team included Kriyal Patel, Jeannie Guelee, Catherine Gonzales and Alexsandra Bugajczyk.

Members of the Alleghany Avenue Elementary School Student Council in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recently sponsored “Emoji Day.” This was the culmination of a weeklong exploration of feelings, providing students with a method of recognizing and honoring their own feelings. School student council members distributed “Mood Meter Charts” to every class within the school. Each classroom teacher reviewed the tool with their class and demonstrated its use by exploring their own feelings as they related to
the mood chart. Teachers examined the various colors represented and how they directly correlate to a feeling. For instance, the color yellow expressed on the meter connects to the degrees of happiness, while red represents degrees of anger. Throughout the week, during morning announcements, members of the student council shared potentially difficult scenarios they created in which a student might experience an array of emotion. They shared colors or feelings that could be affiliated with those situations as they
would appear on the mood meter. Students discussed further any possible solutions for handling the situations in an effort to assist their schoolmates in identifying and addressing their feelings. Classroom teachers creatively included the Mood Meters into their weekly lessons. Students were encouraged to strengthen a feeling of community by donating nonperishable food items to Long Island Cares. On the last day of the week the students wore their favorite Emoji attire to celebrate the occasion.
