(SBPLI)’s Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition since it first opened the doors to the organization in 2005. The event, which this year takes place March 31st and April 1st at the University’s David S. In keeping with their slogan, “multiply the good,” Ridgewood Savings Bank has again teamed up with the New York Islanders, pledging to donate $10 to local charities for every save made by an Islanders goalie this season. So far, past the halfway point in the season, the “Save with Ridgewood” sponsorship has led to nearly $20,000 in donations. “The Islanders goalies have made 1,999 saves, as of today,” said Leonard Stekol, Ridgewood Bank’s President and COO, “which means we’re on pace for donating more than $20,000 again this year.” “With the funds raised so far, we’ve donated $10,000 to the Prospect Park Alliance for its free “Sticks and Skates presented by HSS” weekly kid’s clinics,” said Domenico Ciaccio, AVP, Community Relations for Ridgewood. “We are so pleased to help out the Brooklyn community. Bringing History to Life To culminate a unit on the Civil War, ﬁfthgraders at Harding Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District dressed up as Civil War characters as part of a “wax museum.” Students in Gina Krumholz’s and Caitlin Curran’s classes worked together to research important ﬁgures from

that historical event. Classes throughout the school took turns visiting the museum. As they passed through the exhibit, visiting students were encouraged to push a student made “button” to hear a brief presentation including historical facts surrounding each of the ﬁgures.

I’m always looking for signs. Except when I’m not, which makes them all the more poignant and undeniable. Case in point, the one year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing recently came and went on March 13th, bringing with it the anticipated mix of sadness and reﬂection that these milestones tend to create. Back on that day, one year ago, shortly after learning the devastating news, I stared blankly out my sliding glass door at the tree directly in front of my apartment, only to be met

with the gaze of one solitary robin. Sitting. Staring. I must have stood at that door for a solid half hour, mesmerized by this tiny bird, alone in a barren tree, his eyes fixated on me. Was it a sign? Was it just a matter of ironic timing? Who knows… I chose to find solace in the serenity of the moment, comfort in the quiet. A month later, we discovered a nest of four perfect robin’s eggs at my grandparents’ house, the first of its kind in that backyard, ever. We marveled at how it seemed to literally drop out of the sky at a most opportune moment, manifesting out of thin air,

a precious symbol that life does, in fact, go on. Fast forward to last week. I ran quickly to the store for a bunch of roses to bring to the cemetery, knowing that the impending “blizzard” and freezing temperatures would most likely destroy them in a matter of hours. As I headed back to the car, a sign for birdseed caught my eye. And then, it hit me. Suddenly, I heard chirping. Loud, incessant chirping. I turned around, searching for the source… and there it was, a single, solitary robin, sitting on the top of the pile. Some signs, you just don’t see coming.

An Open Letter to the Lindenhurst Educational Community Dear Parents and Community Members, Starting on Tuesday, March 28, New York State students from grades 3-8 will once again be asked to participate in the state English and Math assessments. We are writing to let you know that you, as the parent of your third through eighth grader, have a choice about whether or not your child will take these tests. The “Opt Out” movement has been at the forefront of the fight to save Public Education. There are politicians whose agenda is to privatize education. We, as parents, teachers and members of a public school learning community, will not stand idly by while these threats persist. The “Opt Out” movement has been instrumental in educating and unifying parents, school officials and educational communities alike. The power of showing politicians that the parents have the power when it comes to public education has helped the appointment of a new Chancellor to the Board of Regents, Ms. Betty Rosa. Ms. Rosa is a staunch supporter of strong public education and of all students’ right to learn. We choose to opt our own children out because we believe this is the front line of the fight to save Public Education. Please consider both options and make the decision most appropriate for your family

• You have the right to refuse the NYS Common Core Tests in grades 3-8 • The NYS Common Core Tests do not yield useful information that can be used to help support your child’s individual needs and strengths. • The NYS Common Core Tests squander valuable learning time. • A focus on state test scores de-emphasizes untested subjects such as art, music, social studies, and science. • An emphasis on NYS Common Core Test scores makes it more difficult for a teacher to meet the needs of both high performing and struggling students. • By law, NYS Common Core test scores in grades 3-8 may not be used as the sole or even the majority of the basis for placement decisions. • If your child does not take NYS Common Core Tests in grades 3-8, he or she may NOT be denied access to enrichment or academic support services. • If large numbers of students opt out, your school district will NOT lose funding. • Teacher evaluations will not be negatively impacted by large numbers of test refusals. • The majority of educators in NYS do not support the Common Core Learning Standards. • The Common Core Learning Standards have never been piloted or tested. They are a set of copyrighted, experimental learning standards that carry a liability waiver and have not been shown to improve student achievement. • On March 31, 2015, the NYS Legislator passed Governor Cuomo’s education reform proposals which double down on the use of high stakes testing to evaluate teachers and schools. Test refusal is now critical if parents wish to prevent test driven education from becoming a permanent reality.

Last week, I took my grandchildren to a restaurant. My six-year old asked if he could say grace. As we bowed our heads he said, “God is good, God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Nana gets us ice cream for dessert. And liberty and justice for all! Amen! Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman remark, “That’s what’s wrong with this country. Kids today don’t even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why, I never!” Hearing this, my grandchild burst into tears and asked me, “Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?” As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table. He winked at my grandson and said, “I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer.” “Really?” my grandson asked. “Cross my heart,” the man replied. Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing) “Too bad she never asks God for ice cream A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes.” Naturally, I bought my grandchildren ice cream at the end of the meal. My grandson stared at his for a moment, and then did something I will remember the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae and, without a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman. To celebrate the athletic accomplishments of its students, Copiague School District held its Winter Sports Awards Dinner on March 7th at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School. Sponsored by the Booster Club, student-athletes in boys bowling, girls bowling, girls basketball, boys basketball, step team, wrestling, boys track, girls track and cheerleading, were recognized for their

dedication to their sports by coaches, Copiague School District administrators and members of the Board of Education. Throughout the night, coaches praised the student-athletes for their success and distributed individual awards, including the Coaches’ Award, Most Improved and the MVP award, to worthy receipients. Nine Golden Eagle awards were presented to students from

the AHA and continued to raise money this year. Together with his mom, Matthew once again created videos asking friends to donate with a speciﬁc goal in mind: along with a high monetary goal, each year Matthew tries to have donors representing every state in the USA. This year he was able to raise a record $4,295.00 from all 50 states, 8 countries and the District of Colombia. He proudly attended the assembly at West Gates on the day of the jump and added his total to what the students at West Gates had raised themselves. To date Matthew has raised $14,795.00 for The American Heart Association and hopes to add to that total every year. His family and friends are very proud of his dedication and accomplishments!
