An Open Letter to the Lindenhurst Educational Community Dear Parents and Community Members, Starting on Tuesday, March 28, New York State students from grades 3-8 will once again be asked to participate in the state English and Math assessments. We are writing to let you know that you, as the parent of your third through eighth grader, have a choice about whether or not your child will take these tests. The “Opt Out” movement has been at the forefront of the fight to save Public Education. There are politicians whose agenda is to privatize education. We, as parents, teachers and members of a public school learning community, will not stand idly by while these threats persist. The “Opt Out” movement has been instrumental in educating and unifying parents, school officials and educational communities alike. The power of showing politicians that the parents have the power when it comes to public education has helped the appointment of a new Chancellor to the Board of Regents, Ms. Betty Rosa. Ms. Rosa is a staunch supporter of strong public education and of all students’ right to learn. We choose to opt our own children out because we believe this is the front line of the fight to save Public Education. Please consider both options and make the decision most appropriate for your family
• You have the right to refuse the NYS Common Core Tests in grades 3-8 • The NYS Common Core Tests do not yield useful information that can be used to help support your child’s individual needs and strengths. • The NYS Common Core Tests squander valuable learning time. • A focus on state test scores de-emphasizes untested subjects such as art, music, social studies, and science. • An emphasis on NYS Common Core Test scores makes it more difficult for a teacher to meet the needs of both high performing and struggling students. • By law, NYS Common Core test scores in grades 3-8 may not be used as the sole or even the majority of the basis for placement decisions. • If your child does not take NYS Common Core Tests in grades 3-8, he or she may NOT be denied access to enrichment or academic support services. • If large numbers of students opt out, your school district will NOT lose funding. • Teacher evaluations will not be negatively impacted by large numbers of test refusals. • The majority of educators in NYS do not support the Common Core Learning Standards. • The Common Core Learning Standards have never been piloted or tested. They are a set of copyrighted, experimental learning standards that carry a liability waiver and have not been shown to improve student achievement. • On March 31, 2015, the NYS Legislator passed Governor Cuomo’s education reform proposals which double down on the use of high stakes testing to evaluate teachers and schools. Test refusal is now critical if parents wish to prevent test driven education from becoming a permanent reality.

We refuse to allow any data to be used for purposes other than the individual teacher’s own formative or cumulative assessment. We are opposed to assessments whose data is used to determine school ranking, teacher effectiveness, or any other purpose other than for the individual classroom teacher’s own use to improve his or her instruction. We believe in and trust our highly qualified and dedicated teachers and administrators. We believe in the high quality of teaching and learning that occur in our child’s school. ‘Tis the time of year when all become Irish for a day, in the honorary sense anyway, and partake in the various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations held across Long Island and New York City. The funny thing is – well, perhaps more ironic than outright humorous – is that when my family and I traveled to Ireland several years ago, we were somewhat surprised to learn that those native to the Emerald Isle do not commemorate the occasion in even remotely the same manner as we do. In fact, the holiday takes on a far more religious tone, filled with pilgrimages to mountaintops to honor St. Patrick himself; a far cry from the drinking and parades which wind through most main streets on this side of the pond.
Speaking of Ireland, and travel, I certainly wish to do more of it, both here and abroad. Before our family trip, I had never been on a plane in my 30 years on this earth; nor, of course, had I bothered to apply for a passport. Old-fashioned road trips across the good old U.S. of A had never held much appeal due to my, shall we say, occasional tendency toward motion sickness during any car ride surpassing two or so hours. And so, at this point, my travels have extended ever so slightly north and south of New York, about halfway down the east coast – no further. And my passport, while it proudly sports that one stamp from Ireland, has remained packed away ever since. Unacceptable, I know. And with that, a new season is on the horizon, although whether Mother Nature will
cooperate remains to be seen. March has always been a notoriously fickle month, what with the remnants of winter storms to contend with, spring rains hovering overhead and blossoms waiting to burst forth from the trees. It is a time of beginnings, of growth, of shaking off the chill of the last several months to head out and feel the warmth of the sun as we explore the great outdoors. No need to pack a suitcase – just hop in the car and go, in any direction, and enjoy the beauty on this long island that we call home. So, as you head out in your green attire this week, take a deep breath of fresh air and start planning some fun activities to see you through to summer. Spring may be a gateway to the season of sun and surf and sand, but it is pretty spectacular in its own right. Enjoy it.
Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and the Department of Human Services recently hosted the Town’s 29th annual Black History Month Celebration at Amityville Memorial High School. This year’s event was titled “The Crisis in Black Education,” and featured a variety of performances as well as local honorees. Deborah Payton-Jones, who serves as both the Volunteer Coordinator at the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Election Inspection Coordinator for the Suffolk County Board of Elections, was the Mistress of Ceremonies for the event. Healthy Lifestyle Students at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District demonstrated their commitment to leading a heart-healthy lifestyle when they participated in the school’s Jump Rope for Heart program on March
6th. In conjunction with their unit on heart health, students participated in the school’s Jump Rope for Heart program during their respective physical education classes. The students jumped rope and
rotated to four different stations geared toward increasing their heart rates, all in an effort to raise awareness for heart health and money for the American Heart Association.

To culminate a unit on the Civil War, fifthgraders at Harding Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District dressed up as Civil War characters as part of a “wax museum.” Students in Gina Krumholz’s and Caitlin Curran’s classes worked together to research important figures from that historical event. Classes throughout the school took turns visiting the museum. As they passed through the exhibit, visiting students were encouraged to push a student made “button” to hear a brief presentation including historical facts surrounding each of the figures.

Lindenhurst High School’s Coffee House and Mentors Club, founded by senior Meagan Ramirez, recently hosted the second Share the Love concert in the high school auditorium. Local musicians, teachers and
alumni came together to perform in benefit of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The club was established in hopes of connecting high students who would not typically spend time together. Students interact
with each other without the labels of football player, band member or theater kid and perform community service acts together as simply friends and students. To date, the club has raised about $2,500 for the cause.

Business students at Walter G. O’Connell High School had a special guest speaker on March 2nd when Mitchell Modell, CEO of Modell’s Sporting Goods, visited the school to present a business seminar. Modell spoke to business students about the history of his company, how it has grown and changed
over the years, how it has adapted and how its business model works in the marketplace. Modell also spoke to students about the company’s mission statement and its motto to listen, respect and respond. He spoke about garnering some real insight into his own company by participating
in “Undercover Boss.” After his lecture, Modell opened the floor for a question and answer session for the business students who are currently taking classes such as marketing, fashion, entrepreneurship, computer skills, web design, and college and career planning.

Director of Facilities Robert F. Cozzetto was named director of facilities for the Lindenhurst Union Free School District during the board of education business meeting held on March 1st. Cozzetto joined the district staff in 1992 serving as the clerk of works. Over the course of the last 25 years, he held
various positions including maintenance crew leader, acting plant facilities administrator, facilities supervisor, assistant plant facilities administrator, chief emergency officer and health and safety director. Most recently, he served as interim director of facilities when former director of facilities retired
on December 30th, 2016. “As a lifelong resident of Lindenhurst, and someone who has served the district for 25 years in various roles, I am honored to take on the responsibilities that comes with being the director of facilities” said Cozzetto. “While it is gratifying to have reached this professional level,
