The Lindenhurst School District Board of Education has begun its search for a new superintendent, voting to enlist the aid of Western Suffolk BOCES in the search process. Western Suffolk BOCES is experienced in this process, which will be led by Dr. Michael Mensch, Deputy Superintendent, and Paula Klingelhoefer, Executive Director. Addressing The Issues

The Lindenhurst School District held its annual legislative breakfast, sponsored by the Parent Teacher Association Council, with more than 100 people in attendance. Guests of honor included New York State Sen. Philip Boyle, Suffolk County Leg. Kevin McCaffrey and New York State Assemblyman Robert Sweeney. The forum began with introductions

and a video on the Gap Elimination Adjustment. The politicians spoke candidly on issues that affect the district, such as Common Core, universal pre-K, Long Island schools getting their fair share of tax dollars, the Triborough Amendment, unfunded mandates, the Consumer Price Index and the GEA. The setting was an ideal opportunity for all Lindenhurst residents,

students and parents to voice opinions, ask questions and meet with lawmakers regarding important topics for the school district. An appeal to the politicians to give the Lindenhurst School District additional funding was made. “We will work hard to try to get additional funding with no restrictions for the Lindenhurst School District,” said Sen. Boyle.

Making Your Mark In recognition of Black History Month, Optimum, in conjunction with the Smithsonian Channel™, is sponsoring the Make Your Mark video contest for high school students. The contest provides an opportunity for students to reflect on how they can make a lasting “mark” by submitting a proposal and creating a video that documents their idea on how to incite positive change within their school and community. Students with the winning video will be

awarded $2,500 for a school or community project. As part of the contest, students will view the Smithsonian Channel documentary Breath of Freedom that details the experiences of AfricanAmerican GIs who helped rebuild Germany at the end of World War II and experienced equality for the first time overseas. Just as the soldiers featured in the documentary helped ignite the Civil Rights Movement, students can document their unique

“mark” for positive change in their own video. The “Make Your Mark” contest is open to all high school students in Optimum’s footprint within the tristate area. Students should record and submit a creative and informative video (two minutes maximum) that explains their “mark,” why it should be chosen and how their school or community could benefit from the $2500 award. They will then share this video (via Facebook or Tweets) with friends and

The staff at St. Joseph Hospital put their hearts into the American Heart Association’s “Go Red” day this year. With each donation, staff received a “Go Red” dress pin and a “Go Red” dress cutout to inscribe the name of

a loved one with heart disease. The inscribed dresses were place on the Hear Wall of Honor as a remembrance for their loved ones. The staff enthusiasm for the event made it easy to reach their goal of $1,000.

A lecture for the staff was also held on Women’s Heart Health, which highlighted the causes of heart disease and preventative steps to take to avoid the number one killer of woman in the USA today.

Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on teenagers. Help is available at most public libraries in the form of a DVD. Some libraries have an older video format. “It’s meant to encourage teens, to tell them that there is hope out there,” said Professor Peter Ramig of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Ramig is one of three nationally recognized experts appearing in the DVD produced by the nonprofit Stuttering Foundation. David Wilkins, a high school student who stutters, narrates the DVD. It features students from junior high school through college talking about their experiences with stuttering and what they found to be helpful. They talk openly about the ridicule they faced from classmates and how their stuttering affects their lives. “We really try to emphasize the embarrassment and frustration factor, and we think teens will relate to that,” adds Ramig. He appears in the DVD along with speech-language

Each one-hour class includes lessons on diet, exercise, staying motivated, overcoming stress, and other behavioral changes, all in a supportive group setting. The goal is to help people reduce their weight through a healthy low-calorie, low-fat diet and by engaging in at least 150 minutes per week of physical activity. This evidence-based lifestyle intervention has been shown to help participants lose 5–7% of their body weight and reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 50%. Grant awards to organizations from the Bronx to Buffalo will support a range of activities to help organizations implement and grow the NDPP, including the expansion of existing programs; communication, outreach, and education activities to obtain a steady flow of participants; and development of business plans to ensure the sustainability of the program. With support from the New York State Health Foundation (NYSHealth), 25 organizations across New York State are ramping up their efforts to prevent diabetes. Grant awards totaling more than $400,000 will help communitybased organizations - from local health departments and health systems to community health centers and YMCAs - implement and expand the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP). This 16-week program, which focuses on lifestyle changes to improve healthy eating and physical activity, uses a well-tested model that could help the 4.5 million New Yorkers with prediabetes reduce their risk of developing the disease by 50%. “New York State is facing a serious and costly health crisis, with nearly 25% of the population already living with diabetes,” said James R. Knickman, President and CEO of NYSHealth. “We need to focus energy and resources on preventing the onset of diabetes and a whole host of other health problems related to obesity. The NDPP model is the most well-tested diabetes prevention program out there, and pushing it out to more New Yorkers in some of the hardest-hit communities across the State will be an important component of curbing the diabetes epidemic.” With this more than $400,000 investment, the Foundation will reach communities with high rates of diabetes and prediabetes, and make the NDPP available to New Yorkers in places where they live, work, and worship.
