The Lindenhurst Union Free School District Athletics Department is pleased to recognize high school senior Trista Seara who has earned the title of Suffolk County Champion for girls winter track. Trista secured the title when she competed in and won the 600-meter race during the Suffolk County Track Championships on February 3rd. The event was held at Suffolk County Community College’s Grant Campus in Brentwood.

The race not only resulted in Trista becoming county champion, but she broke her personal best record with a time of 1:39.34. “After 5 years of running track at Lindenhurst, this was supposed to be my last race,” said Trista. “I just wanted to give it my all and make every practice, workout and street run really count.”

The Birthday Betta By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s here! It’s finally arrived! The moment you all (well I and my Human) have been waiting for! My very first birthday in my bowl, celebrated this past weekend with my Human family. Who would’ve thought this day would come… Of course, in Betta years, that probably makes me about 47. Not to mention the countless days… months… years… I spent languishing in that tiny Tupperware container they kept me in at the pet store. But, ever since February 16th, 2015, the day my Human adopted me, all has been well. There was a party, with dinner, and even a few presents! What does one buy a Betta, you ask? Well, there was the pre-Birthday/Christmas gift of a brand new tank – complete

with a filter and a light and everything – which my Human has yet to transfer me into… something about not wanting to “traumatize” me without consulting with the “pet experts” at the store first. I haven’t received a scheduled moving date as of yet. Speaking of, I’m still patiently waiting to be taken on that shopping spree I was promised back in August for my six-month birthday. All the sales that have come and gone… just think what fancy toys and plants I could have accumulated by now! I must have at least enough for a small castle saved away. And pretty gravel… and maybe a leafy hammock to sleep in… and a seashell to decorate… Tiny brain, big dreams. The one thing I didn’t get was a fishy friend to play with. I don’t need anything fancy like me; perhaps just a small

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Town Clerk Carol Quirk, and Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma to honor three members of the community for their heroic acts that helped save a 12 year-old boy who fell into an icy Babylon canal. Seven year-old Finn Chatterton heard a screaming sound and

immediately alerted his father, Patrick. The two found the boy in the icy water, extended a shovel for him to grasp, and called the police. When Suffolk County First Precinct Officer Kristen Derkevics arrived, the three were able to pull the boy safely out of the water. Officer Derkevics, Patrick and Finn Chatterton were each presented with the Town of Babylon Heroism

Award – the highest honor bestowed to residents by the Town. Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey was also in attendance to present a proclamation honoring the three heroes, as well as recognition on behalf of Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. The officials commended the three for their brave actions and thanked them for their service to the Town.

Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently visited Elen Cleaners to present a proclamation to the establishment’s proprietors, Ann and Simon Hong. The Hongs have been operating Elen Cleaners for more than 30 years and are now preparing for retirement and the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. The story of the Hongs began in the summer of 1966, when they immigrated to the United States from Korea. In 1985, in the spirit of seeking the American dream, the couple opened up Elen Cleaners in the Village of ICY WATER RESCUE - Pictured with representatives from the Suffolk County Lindenhurst. a cheerful presence and became known for their quality of service. The married couple was the epitome of teamwork and was truly an inspiration to all those who had the good fortune of getting to know them over the years. In addition to their cleaning business, the Hongs made a home in Syosset and became the proud parents of two children. Now that retirement is on the horizon, Ann is looking forward to spending more time with her family, as is Simon. When discussing their plans, Simon was particularly excited to mention how he planned to devote some more time to the golf course as well. “The community

will certainly miss the presence of the Hongs,” said McCaffrey. “Of course, their service was top notch, but just as important were their positive attitudes. They have worked hard for many years and have certainly earned their retirement. I wish the Hongs the best of luck, health and happiness in all of the years to come.” Although it is sad to see the Hongs leaving, they are confident that great service will still be available to the neighborhood. The new operators of the cleaners, Sun Sook Kim and Kwang Sook Min (sisters), have been working alongside the Hongs and are more than ready to take the helm.

Souper Bowl of Caring Lindenhurst High School students recently took part in the eighth annual Souper Bowl of Caring Charity CookOff Fundraiser to benefit the Christina Renna Foundation and Lindenhurst residents in need. All remaining food from the day was donated to the Sharing and Caring Soup Kitchen at the United Methodist of Babylon.

The “official” cooking competition covered three categories – soup, chili and baked goods. In addition to the cook off, participants enjoyed a DJ and music, a Chinese Auction and 50/50 raffle. The mission was to capitalize on the Super Bowl weekend to raise awareness about pediatric cancer as well as to inspire people to help fight

hunger and poverty in the community. In the end, the first place and overall winner with her chicken pot-pie soup, was Sue Brandenberger. The “sweet and sassy” chili submitted by Cookie Brennan took first for that category. Lindenhurst High School 12th-grader Trista Seara won the dessert category with her cookie-brownies.
