Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently had the honor of speaking before the members of the Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition (Lindy Cares) during a regular meeting held at Lindenhurst High School. Attending the meeting were its regular members, students, law enforcement, elected officials or their representatives, and a variety of other concerned citizens. During the meeting, updates were provided on the latest initiatives of Lindy Cares, primarily with respect to its efforts to curb substance abuse in the community. An Ode to Driving on LI By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Sure, I understand the anxiety which can come from being forced to travel in such conditions – to a degree. But when a few select drivers and their inability to, you know, drive are the cause? Well, that’s where I lose patience. I’m pretty sure they teach this stuff in driver’s ed, in defensive driving courses – or in the big old handbook known as common sense. It’s not rocket science people. #1. You need to see the road, so clean windows and mirrors are a must. #2. The rest of us need to see the road as well, so having an 18-inch clump of snow ﬂy off the back of someone’s car into your windshield… not the most conducive to aforementioned point. #3. Brakes do not respond well on wet pavement, snow or ice – so it is best to

I’m willing to go out on a limb to say that even those who would count winter as their favorite season do not enjoy driving in the snow and icy conditions it brings, especially if they live on Long Island. Just the other morning, after a surprise helping of the white stuff, I was reminded of the joys of a morning commute in about six inches of slush… The privilege of driving behind those with an aversion to cleaning off their rooftops and back windows… The honor of inching behind drivers who seem to think that to surpass 20 mph would be criminal… The thrill of testing out my brakes every car length or so, as people ahead come to a screeching halt due to…what, exactly? I couldn’t tell you.

These are just a few of the more important points I encountered on my journey to work, on a 20-mile straight stretch of road with no fewer than a dozen or so drivers wreaking havoc. We’ve been fortunate this winter, but that’s not to say we have been – or will be – spared completely. A few more morning or evening rush hours like that, and we’ll all be counting down the days to spring. At a recent gathering, students were joined by members of the Lindenhurst High School Coffee House and Mentors club founded by LHS 11th-

grader Meagan Ramirez. The club was established in hopes of promoting face to face social activity between the younger and older students of Lindenhurst such that when the middle school students transition to the high school, they will know a friendly face and feel comfortable going to a mentor-like figure should the need arise.

Women in Sports Lindenhurst Middle School celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day with a special breakfast to honor seventh- and eighth-grade female student-athletes. These students were honored for their achievements on and off the field, in leadership and dedication to their teams. The guest speaker was Liz Gorman, a Lindenhurst graduate and coach, former student-athlete

and substitute teacher at William Rall Elementary School, who advised the athletes that “No matter what obstacles may cross your path, you should stick with your athletics because they are the one true thing that can help you in all aspects of your life.” National Girls and Women in Sports Day is a nationwide celebration that incorporates communitybased events, ceremonies and activities honoring the

achievements, as well as encouraging participation, of girls and young women in sports.
