I ended last week’s column hoping that this month of February would bring with it a little more sunshine into all of our lives… While this is a nice sentiment, of course we know that life does not always work this way, and there are plenty of storm clouds to weather along the way. This just reinforces the notion that we must all take the time to appreciate the little things in life, the special moments, those people we love and the many memories we share, as we simply never know when they will become precisely that… just a faded memory among many others. After the passing of my grandfather nearly a year ago, and the subsequent sale of the

house that my grandparents had called home for more than 50 years, there was obviously much cleaning out and sorting through mementos to be done. In some ways, this was the most difficult task of all. To me, nearly everything held some sort of significance, some deep emotional attachment which evoked so many precious recollections of years gone by. Of course, these are just objects, material possessions which hardly make up for the loss of the person they are associated with. But the photographs… those are truly special. And boy, are there photographs. I, being of the slightly OCD nature, coupled with my fervent love of all things photography, volunteered to take on the initial task
of sorting through and cataloging the boxes upon boxes of albums, envelopes full of developed photos and a few dozen or so frames and collages. Several months later, I’ve barely made a dent in the process. But it doesn’t matter. There’s no rush where memories are concerned. They should be carefully recollected, and savored. Every single photograph tells a story; and every story unlocks a treasure trove of feelings and emotions – some happy, some sad, some wistful… all meaningful in their own respective ways. And winter, while it may not bring a lot of sunshine into our lives, is the perfect time to take a moment to appreciate all the memories that do.

Celebrating Culture In celebration of the Chinese New Year and as a culmination of their study of the Chinese culture, third-graders at Alleghany Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District attended a special lunch at Doc Lee Lau Chinese restaurant in Lindenhurst.

During the luncheon, students were encouraged to eat traditional Chinese cuisine and were given chopsticks, traditional eating utensils, to use at home. Prior to their visit, the students used videos and books to compare and contrast the Chinese
culture to their own. They wore red, the traditional color for good luck in China, and made decorative, paper lanterns. Students researched the ways in which China rings in the holiday as well as how it the new year is celebrated around the world.

S e v e n t y - t w o Lindenhurst High School students collectively logged more than 67 community service hours as they took part in the first “Eat-n-Serve” session held in the school’s library. Students volunteered to spend their lunch session in the library working with
Amanda Lotitio and Rosalia Millan of the Lindenhurst Public Library making over 80 plush pet toys for the Babylon Animal Shelter in West Babylon. The project was inspired by the Mutt-i-grees in the Library program which aims to enhance children’s social and self awareness
while highlighting the unique characteristics and desirability of shelter dogs. The Lindenhurst students made over 80 plush pet toys for the Babylon Animal Shelter in West Babylon and learned about additional community service opportunities.
Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Councilman Tom Donnelly and Special Assistant Terry McSweeney at the Court of Honor ceremony for new Eagle Scout Christopher J. Gaudino, of Copiague. The Eagle Scout is the highest rank available in the Boy Scouts organization. For his Eagle
project, Gaudino (of Troop 284) planned, developed and implemented the construction of a storage shed for Sophia’s Garden at the Homecoming Farms in Amityville. The new shed will provide a location for the farm volunteers to store their tools and materials necessary for the upkeep of the area. Nearly 160

Kindness Challenge Spreading kindness one act at a time, the students and staff at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District participated in the Great Kindness Challenge from
January 23rd to 27th. To kick off the event, the students watched a video challenging them to complete as many kind acts as possible featuring words of encouragement from
administrators, teacher, custodians, secretaries, support staff and even their parents. Throughout the week, students were tasked with creating a culture
of kindness within their building, community and at home. Using the checklist of 50 kind acts, they started the challenge by decorating the hallways with messages of
positivity. Students created posters and hearts with inspirational messages Each day of the weeklong challenge featured different spirit day celebrations with students dressing in
Copiague School District colors, crazy socks and hair, pajamas and their favorite sports jerseys.
It was a night of international travel for students at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District when they held a “Reading Around the World” literacy night celebration on January 25th. With their passports in hand, students and their parents rotated throughout
the building to different activities. In the cafeteria, Great Neck Road Principal Karla Cangelosi and Assistant Principal Janine Proulx served a delicious dinner of quesadillas and rice with various toppings. Two classrooms were transformed into a tropical retreat as students learned how to hula dance. In the library, students received

Reading Around the World their own set of maracas after performing the Mexican hat dance, while the north gym featured Irish step dancing lessons. Each time the students rotated to a new station, their passport books were stamped. At the end of the evening, all the students gathered in the gymnasium for a read aloud.
