Getting with the Program during Jenna Smakal’s computer skills classes. During a five-day unit on coding, students worked with puzzles, using logic and sequencing to build code. Students were challenged to program the Finch, a robot used for computer science education. Its design is the result of a four-year study at Carnegie Mellon’s CREATE Lab. Using the lessons learned during the week, students were required to complete small task challenges that were more difficult as they

evolved. Elementary students joined the movement by participating in various leveled activities aimed at developing the logical thinking skills needed to embrace 21st-century learning. Meanwhile, Detroit is dealing with his fiancée Miss Adelaide (Gabrielle Barone) who has grown impatient with his stalling the wedding plans. “The characters are forced to decide between being rich or being in love,” said director Brett

Groneman. “It is a story about putting what’s important first and the eternal struggle for our souls.” The school’s orchestra performed familiar tunes such as “Luck Be a Lady” and “Bushel and a Peck,” with great talent, and the stage and lighting crews set the stage for a wonderful performance.

The U.S. Small Business Administration is reminding small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small aquaculture businesses and most private nonprofit organizations in New York of the deadline to submit disaster loan applications for economic injury caused by the apartment building fire on April 10th. The deadline to apply for a working capital disaster loan is February 19th. “Businesses that suffered economic losses as a result of the disaster and want to apply for low-interest loans from the SBA are urged to do so before the February 19th deadline,” said Frank Skaggs, director of SBA Field Operations Center East. Low-interest disaster loans are available in the counties of Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Washington in New York; Berkshire in Massachusetts and Bennington in Vermont. Working capital disaster loans up to $2 million are available at 4 percent for small businesses, and 2.625 percent for private nonprofit organizations with terms up to 30 years. BACCA and SCALA (Suffolk County Art Leaders Association), are pleased to announce its fourth year participating together with the AllCounty High School and Senior Scholarship Art Show and the Children’s Art Show, which will be held at Old Town Hall, 47 West Main Street in Babylon. The All-County SCALA/BACCA Art Show Exhibition will be held at Old Town Hall in Babylon from Thursday, January 21st through Tuesday, February 9th, and shows the work of students from grades 9 to 12. Exhibit hours are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Artist Reception will be held on Saturday, February 6th

from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open to the public. The second show is the Children’s Art Exhibit of work from grades K-8. This exhibit is open for viewing on Thursday, February 11th through Saturday, March 5th. Exhibit hours are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed on Friday, February 12th, and open on Saturday, February 20th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Artist Reception for the Children’s Show will be held on Saturday, March 5th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open to the public. Winter is coming. Winter is coming. So the humans have been saying for the last three months, and yet… only now, in the final week of January, have I gotten to witness firsthand this magical white stuff in action. And what a beauty it is, even from the confines of my tiny betta bowl. Swirling snowflakes, blowing through the air, piling up outside my window to the outside world… and my human, fervently shoveling out her electric blue car – what a fine color it is, I might add – as the wind whips across the parking lot. But still, the opportunity

to hibernate with my human for an entire weekend, to have her undivided attention while we relaxed together and watched Netflix on the couch – that was priceless. We just finished Season 1 of House of Cards and I’m already, excuse the pun, “hooked.” I must admit, I didn’t understand the obsession with scouring the stores for every last container of milk, carton of eggs and loaf of bread at first. But then I realized the horror of not being able to make French toast for an entire day, and I understood the magnitude of such a storm and the havoc it could wreak on the masses. Just the thought of a day without flakes was

enough to drive my fins into a frenzy. Add to that the hazards of commuting, and it’s no wonder humans have so much anxiety at the first forecast of a flake. Me, I have trouble navigating around my plant when the water gets a little cloudy. I have the frayed fins to prove it. I understand this may be only the beginning of the winter weather. So far, not so bad. I’m just keeping my fins crossed that there are no major storms headed this way for February 16th – my very first betta birthday in my human’s home. I expect a big turnout for my party… and presents… and extra flakes of course… Just not of the snow variety.

The Lindenhurst Union Free School District’s Athletic Department and head coach Greg Flynn are pleased to congratulate girls varsity basketball player Alexis Perdue on her impressive accomplishment of scoring her 1,000th point on the court. Alexis achieved the milestone during a game against Copiague High School on January 12th, where she scored a total of 33 points and had 15

rebounds, five assists and six steals. The senior has had an impressive career during her time in Lindenhurst. She has been a varsity player since she was in the ninth grade. Circus Comes to Town schools nationwide. The professionals spent days with students, teaching them different circus tricks that help with students’ coordination, balance, and fine-motor skills. While this program has made its way throughout the district over the years, it made its first district appearance at Daniel Street School in 1998. “Circus skills are

extremely beneficial,” said National Circus Project Executive Director Greg Milstein. “They are individualized, self-motivating, noncompetitive activities that create nearly immediate success such that students of every ability level can achieve a positive outcome.”
