The disrespect and negativity that so many are displaying is a complete disgrace and an embarrassment to all of us and to our country worldwide. President Elect Trump’s priorities of jobs, better trade deals, strengthening our military, a new, improved and more affordable healthcare system, schools controlled at the state level, childcare assistance, tax

adjustments, cutting unnecessary government spending, reducing the national debt, securing our borders to keep America safe from terrorists, drugs and criminals, and always keeping America and Americans first will all begin January 20th, 2017. We have already seen some of President Elect Trump’s positive accomplishments, even before he has taken office. He has succeeded at keeping several large companies’ plants open and operating here in the USA, such as Carrier and Ford. This has saved many jobs and already helped many Americans. We should all be looking forward to many more positive actions and results from this new administration. We are one country, and we should all have and work toward common goals. So… how is everyone’s year coming along so far? Are we still avidly pursuing our New Year’s resolutions, or have we moved on to other, more realistic, goals? Sure, we’re only slightly more than two weeks underway into 2017, but even the most promising “fresh starts” have been known to bite the dust not even a few days in to a new year. Personally, I don’t see the point. Chances are, the second something negative happens, your entire motivation will be thrown off anyway; so, rather than give yourself unnecessary reason for disappointment, keep your goals open and ﬂexible – much like life. The best-laid plans more often than not do not go according to any pre-conceived notion of how things are “supposed” to transpire. The sooner we

realize this, and accept it, the better off we will be in the long run. Take the weather, for instance. Mother Nature is not a force that can be predicted, especially at this time of year. Make all the plans you wish; chances are, they will be forced into “rain check” mode far too frequently. Personally, I’ve already had an entire weekend’s worth of appointments and obligations squashed due to snow, and have tentatively (fingers crossed) rescheduled for the next available opportunity. To be continued… until spring, most likely. And then there are the roads. Traveling on Long Island is a skill to be mastered under the best of circumstances. Throw in some inclement weather and it’s a regular three ring circus, complete with a collection of characters who

either A) should not be on the road at all, in any season; or B) had best make like the groundhog and hibernate for the duration of the winter. Crawling, speeding, braking unnecessarily, swerving all over the road… such are just a few examples of the skills witnessed daily on my fairly brief commute to and from work. Throw in a ﬂurry or two, and forget about it. Such is the state of life in January. And if not now, there are similar factors to face each and every subsequent month of the year. So take your resolutions – or whatever form of self-improvement you have documented for yourself in 2017 – keep them in your back pocket as a reminder, and move onward and upward. There will be a rainbow over the horizon soon enough. Just don’t drive off the road admiring it.

Displaying their knowledge of the scientific process, seventh- and eighth-graders at Copiague Middle School recently competed in the school’s annual science fair. Each student enrolled in a science or science research class was tasked with choosing a topic – either alone or with a partner – conducting an experiment, and explaining and displaying the results. The top 30 projects in all the classes were chosen for display during the fair. During the science fair, students presented their finding to a panel of judges, which included members from the Copiague Chamber of Commence, Walter G. O’Connell High School students, Copiague alumni, administrators and high school faculty members. The school hosted a special ceremony to honor all the science fair participants. Copiague Middle School Science Chairperson Dr. Daniel Leccese and Principal

First Book middle school English language learners as well as any of their siblings and ELL members of the district’s adult continuing education program. In addition to the English language learning population, Lindenhurst students who received recognition as PTA Presidential Service Award winners also received two of the obtained books, each as a reward for their efforts. First Book is a program sponsored by the American Federation of Teachers and the New York State United Teachers aimed at bringing books to students in need. The district’s PTA also played a

large role in spearheading the registration drive in the community. “We were thrilled to be able to provide all elementary students in the district with reading materials last year, and this year we continue to feel proud of our ability to extend that reach to include our English Language Learners,” Mansfield said. “I am confident that with greater community participation during the next drive, we will be able to obtain the 2,000 registrations needed to acquire 40,000 more free books to share with the Lindenhurst School Community.”

Last year, Lindenhurst Union Free School District teacher John Mansfield spearheaded the First Book campaign for the Lindenhurst community and was able to secure a total of 7,000 new books for distribution to the children of Lindenhurst. Each pallet received contained books leveled for students in preschool through eighth grade. As such, books were distributed to all Lindenhurst UFSD elementary schools, the middle school and several community preschools. This year, the drive netted an additional 4,000 books to benefit the district’s high school and
