For his project, Bryan chose to renovate space at St. John the Baptist High School to be used for the “Midnight Run” group. The project involved all kinds of manual labor including, but not limited to, moving furniture, painting walls, and the assembling and installation of shelving units. “Midnight Run” assists the homeless by providing them with food and clothing, and this newly renovated space is surely a welcome contribution to their cause. “Bryan’s service project will play a vital role in assisting some of our society’s most vulnerable individuals,” said McCaffrey. “It is clear that

Apologies to those with birthdays and other similarly cheery milestones in the month of January, but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, it seems that nothing particularly exciting occurs until the groundhog makes his scheduled appearance on February 2nd – and that, only in the case of his shadow being absent, signaling the coming of spring. Not that we should be complaining about the winter weather we’ve been having up to this point. A light dusting of snow once, temperatures hovering above normal for much of the last several months – we have been quite fortunate compared to the last several winters. The guests have gone. The last of the leftovers have been eaten. Presents have been tried on, shown off, returned; in some cases, re-gifted. The decorations have been packed away for another year. The holiday season, which we look forward to each year with such eager anticipation… gone in a matter of days. I’m experiencing a little holiday withdrawal myself. There is something about taking down the Christmas tree, unplugging the lights one last time and surveying a now barren-looking home that just feels… well, depressing is what it feels. Downright melancholy, in fact. Gone is the sparkle of the season.

Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently attended the Eagle Court of Honor for Troop 179’s Bryan John Beard, who hails from North Babylon. The ceremony took place at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in West Islip, and was attended by officials or their representatives from state and local government, scouts of all ages, and the proud family of Bryan. The path that an Eagle Scout candidate must travel is a challenging one to say the least. In addition to earning a slew of merit badges, each candidate must complete a service project as the capstone requirement. The project must be designed to benefit the community, and everything from its planning to execution must be orchestrated by the Scout. This is no small task, as projects of this nature more often than not

Watch Out For the Post-Holiday “Blues”
Christmas and New Years are here and gone! All the hustle and bustle of the holidays have left many of us exhausted. We now begin to pack away all the decorations and begin planning for next year. Friends and relatives came together in the spirit of love and kindness and are returning to the grind of everyday normal life. Alas, the old cliché shall be spoken often in the next few weeks, “Why can’t the Christmas Spirit last all year long?” Something we should all be aware of is the “Post-Holidays’ Blues Syndrome.” We all suffer from this syndrome to some degree. Some of us just seem a little down and cannot get our act together. Some of us refuse to put away the decorations. We tend to blame the feeling on exhaustion, or being too busy, but it is a form of the BLUES. Some people, however, suffer very severely from this syndrome. Consider the person who just lost a loved one recently and suffered through another such season. Consider also orphaned or troubled children, who are lavished with gifts and attention for the holiday season and feel unloved and forgotten about for the rest of the year. Think a moment about those who are unable to get out of their houses and have visitors for 20 days in December, but do not see anyone for the rest of the year.

Please don’t get me wrong. I think it is very important and wonderful the spirit of Christmas that touches so many people. But, I just want to point out a few reasons why some people suffer from severe Post-Holiday Blues. There are many other reasons why some people may suffer from this syndrome. And this syndrome may be the beginning of a more severe depression which may grow, especially during the bleak and dismal months of January and February.

Men and women from across Long Island will be getting all of their red outfits and accessories ready for the American Heart Association’s 15th Annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon. Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of Long Island women. For more than a decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. Since 1984, more women than men have
died each year from heart disease & stroke. An estimated 43 million women in the U.S. are affected by cardiovascular diseases. When you get involved in supporting Go Red For Women by advocating, fundraising and sharing your story, more lives are saved. The Long Island American Heart Association’s 15th Annual Go Red For Women Luncheon on Wednesday, February 11th, 2016 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. OUTDOORS
1. Spruce up all around the home. Keep lawn and shrubbery trimmed and free of bicycles and other clutter. Keep the garden beds weeded and mulched. 2. Put a flowering pot on the front step and keep it watered and trimmed. 3. Fill potholes in your driveway and tidy up walkways. 4. Clean off your outdoor furniture; remove any rust (or toss out the rusted item). 5. Clear out the garage of everything but cars. If yours has become a twocar attic, throw out the excess. 6. Straighten gutters, the mailbox, the fence - and other things that sag. 7. Fix doorbells, tighten loose door-knobs, and oil squeaking hinges. 8. Repair broken windows and shutters.
13. Unless you’re a skilled artist, scale down your personal art work (portraits, landscapes), posters, signs, and family photos, especially in teenagers’ rooms. Create a feeling of spaciousness. 14. Keep shades and draperies open, to admit as much light as possible, but screen out unappealing views. 15. Let your kitchen look warm and welcoming, not a hectic workplace. Keep your sink shining and free of dirty dishes at all times. 16. Organize cupboards. 17. Clean the refrigerator. 18. Keep counter tops clear, but not empty (as if unused); adorn them with your most attractive canisters. 19. Completely degrease your oven. Let the kitchen smell fresh and fragrant (with cinnamon warming in the clean oven, if you have time). 20. Remove debris (dust, flies, moths, etc.) from all light fixtures. 21. Keep bathrooms scrubbed, tidy and equipped with fresh soap and neatlyhung towels (matching, if possible). 22. Get rid of all stains and install new washers and dripping faucets. 23. Feature (with lighting or furniture arrangement) your home’s best characteristics (a fireplace, a picture window, a balcony, ceiling beams, a kitchen eating area, etc.). 24. If you’ve repainted (preferably in safe neutral tones), add bold splashes of color with your brightest throw pillows, crockery, pictures. 25. Place plants in strategic spots in any room - the bigger the more glamorous, if space permits. 26. Light the whole home, especially dark corners and hallways. 27. Hang mirrors where they will reflect outdoor light - as well as make a room look larger.
INDOORS 9. Clean everything in and out of sight. Shampoo rugs and wax floors. Wash or brush walls. Wash windows and clean blinds and draperies. 10. Weed clutter out of closets and cupboards. 11. Create space by storing some of the extra furniture you’ve found useful (bureaus, bookcases, storage chests, oversized chairs) but which makes a crowded impression. 12. Place the remaining furniture so that traffic can flow easily from room to room.
