Kayleigh Balcarcel was selected out of over 200 candidates as a State Finalist to compete for the Title of Miss NY Teen USA pageant being held on January 14th, 15th and 16th at the Performing Arts Center of Purchase College in Harrison NY. Kayleigh, age 17, a Brookhaven resident for all of her life, is currently a senior at Bellport High School whose name she will represent in the pageant. She hopes to attend either Penn State or The Fashion Institute of Technology next year. She is very involved in the plight of the less fortunate and volunteers her time in helping the Lighthouse Mission of Long Island, in their many outreaches. Early kindergarten registration for the Copiague Union Free School District will be held at the district administrative office, located in the Copiague Middle School at 2650 Great Neck Road, from February 1st-3rd, 2017, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m., by appointment only. Children who have turned age 5 on or before December 1st, 2017 are eligible to attend school in September 2017. Lost Pages It was only after a recent conversation with a friend that I realized I don’t read nearly as often as I used to, or would like to … ever, really. I’m not sure when my love of books took a backseat to … what, exactly, I couldn’t even tell you. But it certainly has. Back in elementary school, I used to belong to whatever book-of-the-month club they were peddling in our reading class, subscribing to the various newsletters and lists of new releases. As I moved up to middle and high school, English class was one of my favorites, and I devoured whatever literary material the lesson plan called for. From short stories and plays to novels and poetry, I
delighted in broadening my horizons. College was much of the same, with special emphasis on those deeper philosophical texts, followed by detailed term papers analyzing each word and phrase and my interpretation of them. Leisurely, perhaps not; but the academic appreciation for such historical works was certainly not lost on me. Since then – in the last decade or so – I can probably count the number of books I have actually read cover to cover. The NYCLASS Governing Board is comprised of 15 elected representatives from five regions across New York State. They serve at no compensation for a three year term. Students at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District took a bite out of literacy, not literally but figuratively when the school held its first book tasting on December 15th and 16th. With the library transformed into a café – complete with redand-white checkered tablecloths and moodsetting tealights – the students were invited to
sample all the wonderful books available at their fingertips. Donning her chef hat, chef Louise Gravina, also known as Great Neck Road’s literacy staff developer, invited students into the café to get a taste of the literary delights. The students sampled different genres of books as each table contained a different category of books such as fiction, nonfiction, realistic fiction, historical

fiction, mystery, books in a series and poetry. Students browsed through the selections, getting a taste of their favorites and recording them on their personal bookmarks so they could borrow them at a later date. After their book sampling, the students were treated to cookies and milk and had some time to reflect and discuss their favorite genres.
Copiague Middle School’s student council recently participated in the Macy’s Believe program. For every letter written to Santa, Macy’s donates $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. By writing their own letters and reaching out
to the community to pen letters, the student council collected 3,309 letters, raising more than $3,000 for the Make-A-Wish organization. “All of our students strived to make a difference and wanted to donate more than the 500 letters created last

Adopt-a-Family During the month of December, a great emphasis was placed on making sure that the holidays were merry for all families by the members of the Lindenhurst Union Free School District community. Lindenhurst employees, such as the custodial, grounds and maintenance workers, “adopted” families for the holiday season.
This year marked the ninth annual Adopt-aFamily event led by the Lindenhurst CSEA Adopta-Family committee, chaired by Thomas Frey. The CSEA unit was able to raise $500 and, with additional contributions from several local businesses, the unit provided a local family in need with approximately $900 worth of clothing,

toys and gift cards for the holiday. “We were able to secure a local family with the help of the Harding Avenue social worker Lisa Botticelli and did everything we could to help them have a joyous holiday season,” Frey said. “It is a wonderful feeling to know that you can bring happiness to someone who really needs it.”
