Christmas Celebrations

indergarten students at St. Rose of Lima prepared for the Christmas season by working on detailed Christmas tree projects with their families. They enjoyed reading the book The Gingerbread Man, followed by a delicious snack of gingerbread cookies! The students were also thrilled to be paid a visit by St. Nicholas himself, who left candy canes in a shoe outside their door. Pictured are several of the students.

Student Spotlight GIVING BACK TO OTHERS Over the Christmas holiday, I had a wonderful opportunity to help sick children who were in need. My sisters and I made gift bags and homemade Christmas cards to send to children in Africa. We made two groups of bags, one set for girls, one set for boys. The girls’ bags contained nail polish, toiletry items, coloring books, crayons and stuffed animals. The boys’ bags contained hot wheel cars, toiletry items, coloring books and stuffed animals. The gifts that we made were sent out to Ghana, Africa a couple of weeks ago. The children in Africa got their gifts on Christmas Day. The organization that transported the gift bags and

cards to the children in Africa is called the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine, known as (FOCOS). FOCOS helps children in Africa who are diagnosed with scoliosis, which is a severe curvature of the spine. I enjoyed this volunteer effort. Another volunteer effort I participated in during the week leading up to Christmas was putting together food baskets for people in need. I volunteer at the Zion Gospel Food Pantry on a monthly bases. Our pantry serves people in need 52 weeks a year. We double our donation efforts during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Our food pantry is a designated pick-up

organization for Island Harvest and Long Island Cares. I go to pick up the food twice a week from these organizations. Once again this year, in addition to food, we also gave toys out to those families who are less fortunate. Our church is also a designated distribution organization for Toys-for-Tots. We utilize this resource every year at Christmas to bring joy to children in need throughout our community. Reaching out and giving back throughout the year is always important. However, the Christmas season should always be a time to be even more kind and giving to those less fortunate than us.

As I embark on year number 10 of my tenure here at South Bay’s Neighbor, I am fast approaching another mini-milestone of sorts with this very column. In ten weeks, I will pen (or type, as the case may be) In Step #500. So many topics have been

touched on throughout the years, some inspired by the very fan mail and feedback I have received from all of you. It is with that in mind that I invite you to submit your own suggestions for future columns, en route to the next milestone, whatever it may be. Every writer writes for him or herself; at least, they should. But, without readers, there is little self-satisfaction to be had. So your feedback is welcome. Positive or negative, response equals readership, and

at least a limited degree of engagement. So let’s head into 2015 with the goal of making #500 just the beginning of the next wave of milestones. Mayor Thomas Brennan has announced his appointments to the newly established Lindenhurst Economic Development Committee (LEDC). The Committee has been given the task of researching, reviewing and presenting recommendations to the Village Board on issues of economic growth and the future development of the Village of Lindenhurst. Mayor Brennan has selected Shawn Cullinane, the Village Clerk-Treasurer, to chair this committee. In addition, Village Board Trustee Darrel Kost, New York Assemblyman Robert Sweeney, former Suffolk County IDA Executive Director Anthony Manetta, Dr. Marian Conway and business owner Lance Walker have been named members of the LEDC. Katherine McCaffrey will serve as Secretary to the Committee. “I am extremely excited about the LEDC,” stated Mayor Brennan. “It is a committee diverse in experience and knowledge about our community. It is also a mix of business, community service and government leaders, each who have had a lifetime of involvement in Lindenhurst. I am confident they will be able to bring forward a plan to move the Village of Lindenhurst forward in the years to come.” Mayor Brennan anticipates that the committee will begin its work just after the start of 2015. The LEDC is expected to reach out to various organizations in the Lindenhurst community to solicit comments, opinions and suggestions regarding future economic growth and development in the Village of Lindenhurst. In April 1953, Carl married Mary Josephine Krasnis, his teenage love. He joined the Navy and served as a flight crew member of Squadron VP8 out of RI from 19521955. He and the flight crew flew many missions keeping track of the Russian submarines during part of the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in August 1955 with the rank of 2nd Class Aviation Technician. Directly after his Navy discharge, Carl and Mary moved to Angola, IN where he attended Tri State College. There while working full time to support his growing family, he chose an accelerated academic path where he completed all of his coursework in just three years and earned his BA in Electrical Engineering at the top of his class. Even though he received numerous job offers from all around the country, they decided to move back to Long Island to be closer to family and settled down in Hauppauge NY where he lived for over 20 years, raising their five children Kenny, Carla, Karen, Lisa & Joannee. Carl worked for a few different companies in NY before starting his own business called Solid State Power Consultants, then later AC DC Energy Conversions. During part of this time his business partner was Jack Rallo. Carl continued to work in the aircraft power conversions commercial and military industry for over 48 years, where he officially retired in 2008 after completing his last consulting contract. He was always sought after by many companies for his expertise and problem solving skills in electrical engineering. If a job seemed impossible, Carl was the man to hire & get it figured out! In 1997 Carl moved with his youngest daughter Joannee to Lindenhurst NY where he did a wonderful job being a single & loving parent to her over the next four years. He has three stepchildren: Stephanie, Deborah and Shana, whom he loved like his own from his previous marriage to Janice. He also has eleven grandchildren: Sarah-mc shmara, Sal, Josh, Rosemary, Angie, Andrew, Raymond, Douglas, Rachel, Jakie & Travis, along with two great-grandkids: Evan & Emerson. Carl enjoyed being active and for years played volleyball weekly into his 60s. He also loved going to Atlantic City to play craps. He was good at it and knew all the lingo! He always owned a sports car and loved the power behind the wheel. At one point he owned a go kart which he would take the kids out to drive it on weekends around the empty business parking lots. That kart could get up to 60mph- great fun! While he was not a speeder in his sport cars on the highway, he did get a thrill from skidding out as he was taking off. For fun, sometimes he would purposely peel out as he pulled away from visiting his daughter Joannee and the grandkids. In his later years, he was blessed to be loved by two beautiful women; the first being Barbara Schroeder, who was like an Angel sent from God as she helped his heart come alive with love. We are so grateful for Barbara’s amazing impact on Carl, which was like a spark that brought him back to life. She taught him how to openly express his love towards his children. She was a tremendous blessing to his life. After Barbara passed on in 2009, Amelia Courtier, who was a friend to both Barbara and Carl, continued to extend her friendship to him, which over time grew into a close companionship. Amelia was a positive spiritual influence, as well as a close confidante until she passed away last year. Over the past nine or so years, Carl enjoyed going over to the Rainbow Senior Center in Lindenhurst, NY on a regular basis. There were many special people there whom he enjoyed spending time with. Especially during this past year Irene, whom he affectionately called “the Coffee Lady”, befriended him. He enjoyed playing Pokeno with Irene and her girlfriends. No matter where Carl went, he would always light up a room, and boy, could he dance! All the women would practically line up to get a chance to dance with him. Carl was a New Yorker through and through and loved Long Island. He enjoyed strolling through Baynard Cutter Arboretum, getting ice cream in Port Jefferson, and relaxing to music at Venetian Shores. There is nothing much more powerful than the human spirit, and Carl’s spirit will never leave the hearts of those lives he touched. We will remember the things we loved about him, such as his unique sayings like “Humma humma, what a bumma”, “Oh boy”, “I’m doing just super fine”, “Joe’s pool room” (when answering the phone) . Carl was always a generous peacemaker and his cheerful smile will be greatly missed. We love you Dad. There will be a memorial service sometime during summer 2015 out East, in Noyack, NY. Carl Carman D’Esposito passed away December 28, 2014. He was 80 when he lost his battle to Rabis-strabis of the Rumptrumptorious cancer of the bone marrow. Through to the very end, Carl remained a thoughtful, considerate and loving man. Carl was born in Aug 1934 in Wantagh, Long Island, NY to his parents Joseph and Helen D’Esposito. He was the youngest of three children, Bernice Fuchs, his sister (deceased), and Joey D’Esposito, his brother. When Carl was in his mid-teens, he became friends with a group of guys who called themselves “The Jokers”. This tight knit group of men remained friends throughout the rest of their lives. There are still three surviving Jokers left. Over the years, The Jokers met weekly to play poker and enjoy comradery.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this type of stress affects women more then men. Women caregivers tend to offer more assistance, such as managing physical needs. Three out of four caregivers, men and women, report feeling strained emotionally, physically or financially. The stress involved can be worse for caregivers of the elderly, as it is hard to watch a parent lose cognitive abilities. It’s not unusual for caregivers to develop health problems of their own. Part of the reason is that they are less likely to take good care of themselves due to time and money constraints imposed by caregiving. Caregivers

Peace Light Distribution The Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic Committee on Scouting in conjunction with Christ the King RC Church hosted an International Peace Light Ceremony and concert featuring the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah on Sunday, December 14th. Reverend Joseph Davanzo welcomed everyone. Approximately 300 people attended the service including Scouts and Scouters from Nassau and Suffolk County in addition to the parishioners of Christ the King R.C. Church and many from across Long Island. The Messiah portion featured a full orchestra and soloists. The service concluded with the Hallelujah Chorus. Refreshments and fellowship followed. The tradition of the Peace Light started in Austria in the late 1980’s. The “Peace Light” campaign was originally organized by the Austrian Broadcasting Co. and is still part of a great charitable mission for handicapped children and people in need. Each year, a child from Upper Austria fetches the light - a live flame- from the Grotto of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. The light is then transported to Vienna, Austria under the auspices of the International Scouting Movement and distributed throughout Europe. In recent

years it has also been brought to the United States. The aim of the Peace Light is to bring people the light and the Peace Message, which encourages everyone, especially Scouts, to actively create peace in their own environment and communities

Scouting and the Greater New York Council. This year it is being shared throughout the United States and Canada, and is even being brought to Mexico and South America. In past years the Peace Light has been presented to Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, Mikhail Gorbachev, King Hussein of Jordan, members of the European parliament in Strasbourg, and the United Nations Troops in Kosovo. In December 2001 it was brought to Ground Zero. The International Peace Light is a worldwide symbol of peace and brotherhood. The light is given from one person to another as a gift with the wish for peace and forgiveness among all human beings.
