“How do you go red?” asks the American Heart Association. On Friday, February 7th, 2014, people from across Long Island, as well as corporations, businesses, hospitals, towns, schools, local and state legislators, members of the media, teachers, and people from all walks of life will be wearing red to focus attention on - and raise funds to fight - the No. 1 killer of women – cardiovascular disease. On February 7th, the American Heart Association’s 11th Annual National Wear Red Day asks women to show their support for the fight against heart disease in women by wearing red. It’s an easy, powerful way to speak up and show support for Go Red For Women®, the American Heart Association’s solution to save women’s

lives. The Go Red For Women movement, sponsored nationally by Macys urges women to take charge of their cardiovascular health, make it a top priority and live a stronger, longer life. The North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System is the Cities Go Red Sponsor for the movement. Every minute in the United States, someone’s wife, mother, daughter or sister dies from heart disease, stroke or other form of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women age 25 and older and stroke is the No. 4 killer of women, as women account for 61 percent of all stroke deaths annually. The American Heart Association Go Red For Women movement is about turning around these statistics. It’s

also about resources, information and hope. Donations to Go Red For Women help support our efforts to educate women and to fund breakthrough research by the American Heart Association that helps ensure women are represented in clinical studies. For more than 10 years, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. More than 650,000 women’s lives have been saved, but the fight is far from over. On February 7th, or on a different day if you wish, you and your colleagues are encouraged to wear red (and dress down if your company allows) and each donate $5 or more. As a thank you for their support, each participant will receive a Go Red For Women® red dress pin or

sticker to wear, along with information about how to make healthy choices every day. As a Wear Red Day Coordinator, you’ll receive a Coordinator’s Tool Kit with all the materials needed to

The LI 2 Day Walk has changed its format for 2014 - it will now be a 13.1 mile, one-day walk held on June 7th, 2014. The walk will take participants along a scenic route overlooking the Smith Point Beach and then through the local neighborhood. Participants will have a wonderful lunch and then head back to Smith Point Bridge in the final procession and celebration of survivors which will end with a closing ceremony. If you have not had the opportunity to participate or view this awesome event you will be amazed at the emotional celebration of these survivors. Please consider joining in this celebration. In addition, the LI 2Day has also expanded its mission to raise awareness and funds for other women’s cancers. Registration will open in January.

Searching For That Fresh Start By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As much as I – and millions of others – look to the New Year as a fresh start of sorts, the question certainly arises: is such a thing even possible? In the age of racing from one day to the next, is there time to pause and press the reset button? I always go back to the wise words of a dear friend, who said “you can start your day over any time you wish.” Well, if that’s true, then it would follow the same would go for a week, a month, a year… any point in time when such a clean slate is deemed necessary. In theory, anyway.

Does it work? Can all slights, real and imagined, be forgiven and forgotten? Personally, I believe that they can. Forgiven, anyway. Sure, the mind tends to dwell, and perhaps certain things are not meant to be wiped away completely, as they serve as building blocks, part of the learning curve of life. Day to day, things happen; some we have control over, others we do not. But at the end of those days, we must step back and prioritize what is truly important. And, despite all the outside forces, it always seems to come right back down to the basics – family, friends, loved

ones, those whom we cannot imagine our lives without. And the memories… those individual moments that together create a collective sense of happiness and comfort, those memories we simply cannot live without and would do anything to preserve. This New Year, my hope is the same as it has always been – for good health, happiness and days full of limitless possibilities. And memories. More precious moments to savor in the coming days and weeks and months and years – because those are the things you simply can’t press the reset button on.

Opening Reception Set Twenty-six artists have had their work selected for exhibit in the Huntington Arts Council’s 2013 “Making an Impression II” printmaking show, juried by Stephanie Navon Jacobson. The public is invited to meet many of the artists and the juror during the exhibit’s opening reception on Friday, January 3rd from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Main Street Petite Gallery, located at 213 Main Street, Huntington.

Juror & artist Stephanie Navon Jacobson encourages all artists to explore printmaking, as she believes. “Printmaking is the only medium that inherently gives the artist a record of their thought process and decisions through state proofs. I enjoy technique and process and there can be lots of process in printmaking. It can be very sophisticated and complicated or very simple, and still yield wonderful

images.” When asked about her approach as a juror, Ms. Jacobson stated, “There were many wonderful submissions for this exhibit. I looked for technique and craftsmanship as well as building an exhibit that showcases the various intaglio, relief and planographic printmaking techniques. The result is a beautifully hung exhibit that hopefully educates and excites the viewer about the joys of printmaking!”

He was 64 years old. “Our goal in creating the Michael S. Rosenbaum Foundation is to honor and continue Michael’s work with young correspondents, producers and writers,” said Michael’s sister, Judy Witt. “This scholarship will provide students with a unique opportunity through the Marie Colvin Center to do just that, for now and into the future.” The scholarship will support student journalists who participate in the Marie Colvin Center’s “Journalism Without Walls” program, which takes undergraduates and graduates overseas to report, write and produce print and multimedia

The friends and family of Emmy-winning CBS News Producer Michael Rosenbaum have established a memorial scholarship at the Stony Brook University School of Journalism in support of the Marie Colvin Center for International Reporting. The $30,000 gift from the Michael S. Rosenbaum Foundation will be matched by a special grant from Jim and Marilyn Simon and the Simons Foundation, to establish a $60,000 endowed scholarship. Michael Rosenbaum had an illustrious 27year career at CBS, producing for CBS News, 60 Minutes and 60 Minutes II. He served as Tel Aviv bureau chief during the First Palestinian Intifada, collaborating with correspondents Dan Rather and Bob Simon. His field producing during

She grew up in Oyster Bay, not far from Stony Brook University. The Marie Colvin Center was established in 2012 to honor Marie Colvin’s legacy by training the next generation of international multimedia reporters, while fostering proactive and innovative solutions to meet the need for foreign news coverage. The announcement of the Rosenbaum Scholarship comes in tandem with the expansion of the Marie Colvin Center Advisory Board to include Jon Williams, Managing Editor for International News at ABC News, and Ann Curry, National and International Correspondent/Anchor for NBC News. QUESTION: What happens during root canal therapy? ANSWER: In root canal work (endodontic therapy), the nerve chamber is entered and cleaned by long, thin instruments. The object of treatment is to clean the tooth completely all the way to the tip (apex). The pulp chamber is sterilized with medication and sealed with a rubber material called gutta perche. Because the infected pulp is dead, there should be very little, if any, pain attached to the procedure. However, a certain amount of sensitivity from the bone around the newly treated tooth is normal. Sometimes during endodontic treatment, the entire infection cannot be reached with instruments. The root can have a sharp bend; the pulp chamber can split into one or more canals; the infection can be too high or entrenched in the bone. In such cases, it is necessary to trim the tip of the root surgically and remove the infection. This procedure is called an apicoectomy.

For The Love Of Jake name, they have founded the Jake Koenigsdorf Foundation to raise money to help alcoholics and addicts who are willing to do whatever it takes to get clean but don’t have the financial means to search for a solution - those that slip through the cracks, without wealthy families, insurance or access to state support. They must be desperate and willing. That is the key, you see. Willingness. If addicts are not willing to do whatever it takes to get clean, they will likely fail. It takes a level of desperation to commit to the program and way of life necessary to get and stay clean. The Foundation isn’t just a dream. They have already raised enough to support eight addicts on their journey. Will they succeed? To be frank, if there was a cure, there would be no need for a foundation. But there is at least one solution that has helped many addicts and alcoholics stay clean for their whole lives. The hope is that the ones that the Foundation helps will

Major League Baseball pitcher Joseph M. Nathan, a Stony Brook University alumnus and former Seawolves baseball star, received an honorary degree during the first of two Winter Commencement ceremonies today. “Dr. Nathan,” who recently signed a two-year contract with the Detroit Tigers, and graduated from Stony Brook in 1997 with a degree in Business Management, was presented with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree for “serving as an exemplary

role model” and for his “unwavering commitment to Stony Brook University and the Department of Athletics.” During the ceremony, Nathan was praised for his work ethic, his passion, and his success on and off the field. “I am blown away,” said the 341-save, six-time Major League All Star pitcher after his degree was made official by SUNY Trustee Cary Staller. “I have been taken aback and humbled by the whole experience.” Nathan went on to say

that he was not widely recruited to play baseball; that Stony Brook was “the absolute perfect fit,” and that “coming to Stony Brook was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life.” In total, 2,244 degrees were conferred at the two separate ceremonies: 1,090 Bachelors; 208 Doctorals; 818 Masters and 128 Certificates.
