The Lindenhurst Union Free School District welcomes Dr. Candice Brodie to her new role as principal of Lindenhurst High School effective July 1. Dr. Brodie comes to the district by way of Baldwin High School, where she was employed first as the Supervisor of Secondary Social Studies and went on to hold the position of Assistant Principal for Instruction. “As Assistant Principal of Instruction at Baldwin High School, I have come to know the school community. Working collaboratively with the students, teachers and the rest of the administrative team gave me the ability to not only put into practice my values and vision, but to hone and craft them to match the needs of the school and seek to find ways to always be improving and moving forward.” Dr. Brodie’s career in education began in 1993 when she spent five years

From there she spent nearly 20 years within the North Shore School District, where she continued to teach social studies at the secondary level before taking on the additional role as Coordinator for the North Shore High School’s International Baccalaureate Program.

“My goal for our students at Lindenhurst High School is for them to find what they love to do, where they find success and what motivates them,” Brodie said. “I can’t wait to get to know them and be a part of their discovery.” A lover of learning, Dr. Brodie has earned a doctoral degree in administration and instructional leadership from St. John’s University and post-master’s advanced certificates in school building leadership and school district leadership from The College of Saint Rose, as well as a Master of Arts degree in secondary social studies education from Queens College. At University at Albany, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication and rhetoric with a minor in history. The district extends its congratulations and is confident that Dr. Candice Brodie will excel in this leadership position as she has in others.

On June 26, the graduates of the Lindenhurst High School Class of 2018 took to the Edward F. Kienle Memorial Field in a sea of green and white as the Lindenhurst High School Band played “Pomp and Circumstance.” The school’s Marine Corps JROTC members and members of the VFW Wade Burns Post #7279 presented the colors and the senior music students, under the direction of Charles Pramnieks, led the audience in the singing of “The StarSpangled Banner” while accompanied by members of the school’s American Sign Language class. Liam Adams, Class Council president and Nicole Schepis, vice president, addressed fellow classmates, in addition to remarks made by valedictorian Nicholas Hager and salutatorian Joseph Grogan. In his valedictory speech, Nicholas shared a story of an eagle raised among chickens

Brandon and Samanta Molina also earned the Attorney General’s Triple C award for courage, character and commitment. Scott Pineda was recognized for his perfect attendance. Warrior of the Year honors went to Kayla Marrero and Bryan Vanegas. Mr. Mitchell introduced a new award this year, Warrior the Year faculty members, which was presented to Erica Azzara and Kerry Kearney.

A winning attitude and selfdiscipline are the keys to success, Edmund W. Miles Middle School Acting Principal Earl Mitchell told ninth graders as they prepare to embark on their journey to Amityville Memorial High School. The middle school hosted its ninth grade awards ceremony on June 25, celebrating the high school Class of 2022. Mr. Mitchell encouraged each student to read at least two good books over the summer to keep their minds sharp. When they return in September, they should enter their new school with a positive mindset. “Don’t let any excuse hinder your success,” he said. Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly said that just weeks prior, the ninth graders saw members of this year’s graduating class traverse through the middle school halls for the annual senior walk. In three years, it will be their turn, and by that time they will be well prepared for the challenges of college, careers and the world. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 3 sessions will be on August 13th, 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. information. On August 16th at 6:30PM, The Social Brain is hosting a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association. This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. Additionally, on September 22nd all are welcome to come support this organization and enjoy an afternoon out at the ballpark with family and friends! The Social Brain is hosting a day at the ballpark to watch the Long Island Ducks game at 1:35PM. Tickets are $15.00 a person and parking is free. There will be a pre-game autograph session with all players on the field and children will be able to run the bases post game. If you are interested in attending, please contact Ira Dunne at 631.793.4311 and also let him know if you need an accessible seat to sit or space for a wheelchair. Lastly, the Social Brain is available to attend group meetings to speak about head injury prevention. Topics can include mental health prevention, drug abuse, bike/wheeled safety, sport safety, concussions, anti-bullying and asking for help when needed. They will prepare your speech based on age group and your needs. Babylon’s 2019 Soldier Ride Successful Again Project in 12 years. Other notable elected officials were in attendance, including Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Sherriff Errol Toulon, several New York State Senators, Assemblypersons and local village officials. Wounded Warrior Project CEO Michael Linnington and former NFL player Tony Richardson were also in attendance and spoke at the morning ceremony.
“It is crucial for us to provide support for the brave men and women who risk their lives overseas and make serious sacrifices,” said Councilwoman Gordon surrounded by the other elected officials and representatives on the front steps of Babylon Town Hall. “This event is a great example of our community coming together to support these heroes. Thank you to everyone at the Wounded
Warrior Project for their hard work to make this event happen each year and be such a success,” she added. Over 50 Wounded Warriors led the pack of bicyclists out of Town Hall after a flyover by a Suffolk County Police Department helicopter. Residents lined the course from Sunrise Highway to the entrance of Overlook Beach, where a barbeque hosted by local emergency
response departments and sponsors welcomed the riders. “This event gets bigger and bigger every year and never fails to impress,” said Supervisor Schaffer before introducing the group of elected officials that were in attendance. “Our country was built on the actions of people like our Lieutenant Colonel Jackie Gordon and the rest of the veterans you see here today,” he added.
Frank Agoglia, a World War II veteran who stormed the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day invasion and Deer Park resident, was honored before the start of the ride. Frank served with a Glider Infantry Regiment attached to the 82nd Airborne Division. After serving his country, he served the people of New York as a member of the NYPD from 1947 to 1980 when he retired as a detective.

Welcomed Into Honor Societies The end of the school year is a time of celebration and reflection and as such, award ceremonies were held throughout the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recognizing student academic successes. Lindenhurst High School recently inducted its newest members into the National Honor Society. Holding the celebratory lit candles, the inductees streamed into the school’s cafeteria to join parents, friends and teachers for the special ceremony and celebration. Students of this year’s National Honor Society Executive Board gave speeches and conducted the official induction of new members. Principal Dr. Clinton Grant and administrators congratulated the students. Speeches were made for leadership, character, service and scholarship, the qualities that placed the students in this prestigious group.

Teacher Procures A Grant Daniel Street Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District has been selected to receive a grant from the Tanger Outlet Center in Deer Park that will benefit the school’s vocabulary development program. The grant submission was made by Maureen Benson, the school’s speech language pathologist. Benson and her students read the book “Donovan’s Word Jar” by Monalisa DeGross about a little boy who collected words and then gave his words away so that others could experience the same joy of adding to their vocabulary. The fifth grade students thought about sharing the words they collected, with the school. “Outside my classroom there is a jar painted on the wall with the words my students have added,” said Benson. “With this grant, I will purchase a display case so that everyone in the school will
be able to add their own words to the display and hopefully it will become a schoolwide center that the students and teachers will look forward to each week as the words change.” A check in the amount of $680 was presented to Ms. Benson and Principal Linda Domanico by Tanger representatives office administrator, Amanda Fuentes, and general manager, Nancy Larson.
