Restore Historic WWI Gatling Gun

The Inc. Village of Lindenhurst and the Lindenhurst Historical Society are pleased to announce their next joint effort to preserve and protect all things Lindenhurst. Currently underway is an endeavor to restore a well-recognized and iconic community historic object –our WWI Gatling Gungifted in 1921 to Lindenhurst by the War Department.

In 1922, the monument containing the Gatling Gun was completed, standing at the intersection of South Wellwood Avenue and Montauk Highway – marking the southern “gateway” into Lindenhurst and its downtown ever since. The Gatling Gun was part of a larger volunteer community project conceived in 1919 and dedicated to recognizing Lindenhurst WWI servicemen. The Gatling Gun’s complementary Monument Plaza, featuring a 7’ granite obelisk topped with an eagle and bearing a bronze plaque inscribed with the Honor Roll – the names of 101 servicemen and 4 merchant marines is located at Monument Plaza in the center of Lindenhurst’s downtown, South Wellwood and Hoffman Avenues. Both monuments sit at opposite ends of South Wellwood Avenue, and both monuments have remained focal points in Lindenhurst, each a testament to the volunteer spirit that built this community and a visual reminder of our time-honored tradition to salute and honor our community’s veterans-those who made the ultimate sacrifice and those who came home to build our country.

Discussion regarding the Gatling Gun’s restoration and refurbishment began last year and, after a pause, has begun again this year. The committee, chaired by Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle, includes Village Historian Anna Jaeger, Village Museum Director Marianne Guglieri and Historical Society members Philip Santoli, Pete Guglieri and Lynda

Recognizing that the Gatling Gun and the site itself have undergone several restoration efforts over the past century, the committee maintains that its goal is to be as accurate as possible with restoration and seeks to utilize best practices to renovate the Gatling Gun to its original grandeur. The committee has consulted with Town of Babylon Historian

Mary Cascone, the Museum of American Armor, and the Long Island Carriage Museum in order to learn and consider restoration methods that will not only accurately restore the Gatling Gun but also add to its longevity. A restoration plan has been developed and will include much-needed rust remediation, metal reconditioning and repainting that will accurately depict the Gatling Gun’s original paint color. Discussion continues with a Pennsylvania wheelwright to provide period-appropriate wooden wheels that will replicate the carriage’s original wheels.

A fundraising campaign to support the restoration, partnering the committee with Bricks and Minifigs - West Babylon, is now underway. On Friday, June 19, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Bricks and Minifigs will host an event where friends and families are invited into their store in the Great South Bay Shopping Center. For an admission fee of $40.00, families will be encouraged to create their favorite Lindenhurst location, building, store, or site using the Legos Bricks and Minifig staff will have on hand. Participants will have the option to keep what they have built or lend it to create a display planned for the Village’s Lindenhurst Liberty Day, Saturday, July 11, 2026, celebrating the country’s 250th Anniversary.

In addition, Bricks and Minifigs’ creative Brick Specialists have designed a Lego model of the Gatling Gun that will be on display at both events. Donors who contribute $100.00 to the restoration effort will receive their own kit to build a Lego replica of the Gatling Gun. Polish Heritage Day Celebrated At The Village Square

Polonia of Long Island recently hosted their annual Polish Culture Heritage Day at Village Square Park in Lindenhurst. The event brought together community members and elected officials to celebrate the rich history, traditions, and contributions of the Polish-American community.

Among those in attendance (in photo with event committee members, left to right) were: NYS Assemblyman Kwani O’Pharrow, Town of Babylon Councilman Tony Martinez, Village Trustee David Collins, Village Mayor Michael Lavorata, and Suffolk County Legislator RJ Renna.

The event recognized the importance of preserving Polish heritage and celebrating the cultural diversity that enriches the Lindenhurst community. Village officials thanked Polonia of Long Island for hosting the event and for their continued efforts to promote and share Polish culture throughout Long Island.

External Diploma Program

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.

Newspapers have helped shape the world for decades, serving as invaluable resources that highlight both national and local news, retail information, cultural events, and much more. Although several newspapers now offer online versions of their publications, many readers remain partial to print versions. Those who purchase printed newspapers daily or subscribe to home delivery should consider recycling the papers to protect the planet. According to the environmental resource EarthEcho International, recycling a single run of the Sunday issue of The New York Times - or a comparable paper’s Sunday edition - would save 75,000 trees.

Lindenhurst High School is proud to name Ajay Rambarran and Ron Ramuschit as the school’s Class of 2026 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.

Ajay has earned the highest grade point average in his class at 105.89. He will graduate with an AP Capstone Diploma and an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors, earning New York State distinctions in Mathematics and Science. Ajay is also recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction. Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also

can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in

the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who

did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much

volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst Honors Nicholas Walters As A Terrific Kid

The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst honored Nicholas Walters, a fifth grader at Harding Avenue Elementary School, as a Terrific Kid. The program, established by Kiwanis International, promotes character development, self-esteem, and perseverance. Students are nominated by their principals and teachers for having achieved a personal best goal. His principal and teacher recognized Nicholas as “a hardworking and dedicated student who has demonstrated meaningful academic and social growth.” Congratulations, Nicholas!
