(NAPSI)—Many people may not realize that it only takes two minutes for a house to be engulfed in flames. The American Red Cross and its Home Fire Campaign partners are asking everyone across the country to take the following two simple steps to help decrease the risk of home fires and save lives: 1. Create and practice your 2-minute drill. Have at least two ways to escape from every room. Select an outside meeting spot at a safe distance where
family members can meet. Discuss the plan with everyone in the household and practice it until everyone can escape in less than two minutes. Conduct practice drills at least twice a year. 2. Install and maintain smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms halve your risk of dying in a home fire. Put them on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Test the alarms monthly and change the batteries when needed. Never
disable a smoke alarm. Teach children what an alarm sounds like and what to do if they hear one. For a Home Fire Safety Checklist and worksheets to create your 2-minute drill go to redcross.org/fire. On May 7, students in the ABA program at the Daniel Street Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District took part in a painting workshop with The Color Palette Art Studio of Lindenhurst. Owner Liz Gilmore
appeared on the students’ classroom Smart Boards and provided each class with step-by-step instructions on how to complete a painting of birds on a branch. Using pre-arranged materials, the students proudly created their own version
of the painting. “All of our students did an amazing job following directions,” said teacher Nicole Fellin. “It was a lot of fun. Hopefully, we will be able to get back there in person next year, but this was a great alternative.”

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm www.hobbsfarm.info
Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a nonprofit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 30,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipiants can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. With a strong faith-based history and being that it is still owned by a local church, you will notice a strong Christian presence as soon as you walk onto their land. Faith based signs, a large wooden cross and a welcoming peaceful environment truly
makes this farm special. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has 6 distinct areas: The Memorial Garden: The Memorial Garden is at the front tip of their property. It is a quiet, shaded area with flowers, beautiful greenery and a peaceful waterfall to remember people who have passed on. The Education Garden: The Education Garden area grows many heirloom varieties, has a small compost area and hosts educational events for small groups. The Greenhouse: The Greenhouse allows this farm to extend their season during the colder months. The Community Garden: The Community Garden hosts Brookhaven Community garden plots. The Garden of Ephraim: The Garden of Ephraim is a wheelchair accessible garden, which consists of a beautiful paved area with raised beds! There is also street access directly into The Garden of Ephraim. Food Pantry Donation Area: This area of the farm consists of several acres of farm land and is the main growing area. The selfless efforts of all the volunteers that work hard to keep this farm afloat is truly a blessing. They don’t get paid a dime, but they love what they do. To me, this farm shines bright as a symbol of hope and resilience. However, it needs some more help itself. TROOP 2014 HONORS THREE NEW EAGLES - On Saturday, May 22nd, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined Boy Scout Troop 2014 of West Babylon as they honored their newest Eagle Scouts! Nicholas Alexiadis, Aidan O’Sullivan, and Vincent Vozza, persevered through the COVID-19 Pandemic to attain Scouting’s highest honor. For their projects, Nicholas built a shelving system to hold food pantry overflow at the Our Lady of Grace Food Pantry, Aidan put together a blood drive with nearly 80 donors, and Vincent installed a bench, statue, fence flag, and did landscaping at Sgt. New York Blood Center Announces A Blood Emergency New York Blood Center (NYBC) announces a blood shortage in the region, one year after New York was the epicenter of the pandemic. Before COVID-19, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations like high schools, colleges, and offices. It has been one year since these groups had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19 and few have been able to resume these life-saving events. NYBC currently has a 4 day supply of blood, which is well below what is needed by area hospitals. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat
patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Donors with type O and type B blood are especially needed as NYBC currently has a 1-2 day supply of these blood types. “With thousands of New Yorkers getting vaccinated each day, we are thrilled to watch our state recover from this catastrophic year,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director at New York Blood Center. “As New York bounces back in strides this spring, we need everyone to make an appointment and donate blood to help save lives. Café D’Art Tour Opens Promoting the Arts and Local Businesses in the Town of Babylon Until June 18, 2021
Continued From 19 participating cafes is available for download on the website, as well as a complete list of the 35 local artists whose work is available for viewing and for sale during the tour, links to the cafes and information about tour specials. To promote the Tour, cafe-goers are encouraged to obtain a punch card when they make a
purchase at any of the participating cafes. They can then take the card to the other five locations during the tour period to be punched. When their card is completed it can be entered to win a “small business” basket giveaway. Opening weekend was May 15 - 17, 2021. BACCA was able to promote the tour at a booth during the Babylon Village ’Spring Fling Arts and Music Festival’ on Saturday, May
15th. Bacca Executive Director, Liz Mirarchi, who was enjoying the day while working the BACCA booth, said, “We are excited to offer this opportunity for our local artists to showcase their work, and for the community to explore the arts in their local cafes as our downtowns come to life following this challenging year!” Participating Cafes: Babylon Bean Coffee
