New York Blood Center (NYBC) announces a blood shortage in the region, one year after New York was the epicenter of the pandemic. Before COVID-19, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations like high schools, colleges, and offices. It has been one year since these groups had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19 and few have been able to resume these life-saving events. NYBC currently has a 4 day supply of blood, which is well below what is needed by area hospitals. Rode. “I have formed such a great bond with him, it took me so long to gain his trust, and I can’t fathom the thought of leaving him behind once I get deployed back to the U.S. He has been a wonderful companion and provides me so much comfort when I need it most. I could not leave this cat behind to suffer and die. He trusts me, and I won’t let him down.” Paws of War is seeking the support of the community to cover the costs in order to bring Bubba back to the states to live out his life with Sgt. Rode. While the organization has helped many soldiers bring their rescued animals back, it’s a mission that is costly. Soldiers tend to rescue stray dogs and cats, and they form bonds with them that help them to find comfort during their time of deployment. With the help of donations from the community, they are able to cover the expenses that are involved in

such a mission. The organization has helped so many soldiers with this type of mission that it has created a strong network of support. It’s that network that helps them to navigate through the challenges and logistics of relocating a pet overseas, and to pay for the care, paperwork, and flight that is involved in the mission. DANIEL STREET STUDENTS GET INTO CHARACTER - Upon learning about some influential Americans throughout history during class, students in Alyson Ferreby’s second grade class at Daniel Street Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District, read biographies and completed art projects depicting their chosen notable American. Students then donned the costumes of the figure they studied presented their projects in character, sharing interesting facts about themselves to their classmates. While she didn’t set out to be, Army Sergeant Rode became an angel to a cat while serving in the Middle East. She’s on a mission to help Paws of War with the costs of rescuing her cat, which she named Bubba, back to the states with her since she has received new orders. It’s a mission that Paws of War can help her pull off, but only with the support of the community. This type of effort takes a village, and the organization is asking people to support Sgt. Rode, who is serving her country. “This is a story you can’t help but to love and want to get behind,” explains Dereck Cartright, a disabled veteran who is the stateside logistics coordinator at Paws of War. “Sgt. Rode saved Bubba, but there’s only so much she can do on her own” When Sgt. Rode first saw Bubba, he had given up. Bloody, frail, and injured, the cat ran from everyone. It was clear that he had been fighting for his life for a long time. Sgt. Rode knew she had to help. For days, she left food, waiting nearby to make sure he ate. Initially, he cried and backed away when he saw her, but eventually, he grew to trust her and allowed her to sit within just a few feet while he frantically ate the food she left. Slowly but surely, Bubba allowed her to get a little closer until, finally, Sgt. Rode was able to touch him. However, what she discovered horrified her. Old scars mixed in with new wounds that covered Bubba’s body. He had been through a lot and was timid, but once he felt the kind touch of Sgt. Rode, he immediately began purring, showing her the love and affection he had never been shown. She became Bubba’s angel, and he became her greatest joy while serving overseas, and they were essentially inseparable. Worry came back to her when she received new orders to head home, and it was clear that she would

makes this farm special. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has 6 distinct areas: The Memorial Garden: The Memorial Garden is at the front tip of their property. It is a quiet, shaded area with flowers, beautiful greenery and a peaceful waterfall to remember people who have passed on. The Education Garden: The Education Garden area grows many heirloom varieties, has a small compost area and hosts educational events for small groups. The Greenhouse: The Greenhouse allows this farm to extend their season during the colder months. The Community Garden: The Community Garden hosts Brookhaven Community garden plots. The Garden of Ephraim: The Garden of Ephraim is a wheelchair accessible garden, which consists of a beautiful paved area with raised beds! There is also street access directly into The Garden of Ephraim. Food Pantry Donation Area: This area of the farm consists of several acres of farm land and is the main growing area. The selfless efforts of all the volunteers that work hard to keep this farm afloat is truly a blessing. They don’t get paid a dime, but they love what they do. To me, this farm shines bright as a symbol of hope and resilience. However, it needs some more help itself. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a nonprofit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 30,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipiants can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. With a strong faith-based history and being that it is still owned by a local church, you will notice a strong Christian presence as soon as you walk onto their land. Faith based signs, a large wooden cross and a welcoming peaceful environment truly

SUFFOLK COUNTY LEGISLATORS CALL ON NEW YORK STATE TO REPAIR DAMAGED ROADWAYS - In a press conference held at the Perry B. Duryea State Office Building on Friday May 21st, Legislator Kevin McCaffrey and a bipartisan contingent of Suffolk County lawmakers called on Governor Andrew Cuomo, their State Legislative counterparts, and the federal government to take more action in repairing our crumbling roadways as well as expand upon our aging infrastructure. Although the State did respond to a letter drafted by the County Legislature outlining a schedule of their intended actions and roadway repairs, the expansive deadlines- some several years from now- are not good enough. “The people of New York State expect more and deserve more,” said Legislator McCaffrey. Café D’Art Tour Opens Promoting the Arts and Local Businesses in the Town of Babylon Until June 18, 2021 Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA), in partnership with Colored Colors, present a multi-location art exhibit throughout the Town of Babylon. Cafe-inspired works created by local artists are on view at six coffee shops until June 18, 2021. Sponsorship is provided by the Town of Babylon LDC. Along with the art, there will be pop-up events and live music during the tour, which will be announced on the BACCA website, https://

www.babylonarts.org/ cafe-d-art-tour, and on social media. A map of the Town of Babylon with the locations of the participating cafes is available for download on the website, as well as a complete list of the 35 local artists whose work is available for viewing and for sale during the tour, links to the cafes and information about tour specials. To promote the Tour, cafe-goers are encouraged to obtain a punch card when they make a purchase at any of the

participating cafes. They can then take the card to the other five locations during the tour period to be punched. When their card is completed it can be entered to win a “small business” basket giveaway. Opening weekend was May 15 - 17, 2021. BACCA was able to promote the tour at a booth during the Babylon Village ’Spring Fling Arts and Music Festival’ on Saturday, May 15th. Bacca Executive Director, Liz Mirarchi, who was enjoying the day while working the
