Presiding Officer McCaffrey Posthumously Recognizes Theodore Newman Of Babylon For Jewish American Heritage Day

On Wednesday May 7, 2025, the Suffolk County Legislature gathered to recognize Jewish American Persons of Distinction throughout Suffolk County. Presiding Officer McCaffrey was proud to posthumously recognize Theodore Newman!

Suffolk County residents of Jewish heritage were honored by County Executive Romaine and the Suffolk County Legislature in honor of Jewish American Heritage Day and Month. The evening event, organized by Legislator Stephanie Bontempi, chair of the Legislature’s Education & Diversity committee, was held in the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge on Wednesday May 7, 2025. Highlighting the event were nominations by the legislators, recognizing Jewish American Persons of Distinction for their remarkable achievements. Those achievements span an impressive and diverse range of endeavors – from rabbis and chaplains, to physicians and attorneys, to teachers and principals, to Scoutmasters and public servants, to engineers and law enforcement.

Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey quoted the 2023 resolution establishing Jewish American Heritage Day in Suffolk County.

“Judaism has a rich and extensive history spanning thousands of years, with its members enduring despite facing many forms of opposition and oppression. Jewish people have made a notable impact all around the world, especially in the United States; and their impact can be seen in virtually every aspect of society, as exemplified by this year’s honorees.”

“From my district, I was pleased to posthumously honor Theodore Newman,

Town Of Babylon Fireman’s Memorial Day

On Sunday, May 18th, the Town of Babylon Fire Departments gathered at the Babylon Town Hall Fireman’s memorial. They gather here annually as a poignant reminder of the bravery and commitment shown by every department

Councilman Terence McSweeney, the town’s public safety chairman and firefighter for over 25 years, addressed the department members, saying, “We gather to remember those we have lost and to express our

legacies they have created. To the grieving families, we recognize that no words can truly ease your pain or fill the void left by your loved ones. Yet, take solace in knowing that their memories are cherished, and their service will never

better known as Teddy, who lived a life of service to our community, state, nation, and the Jewish faith,”

“Teddy served as a Corporal in the United States Army during the Korean War, and up until his passing last summer, remained confident he could still drive a tank –even at 95 years old, and with a hearing disability credited to his time around tanks.”

“Outside of the military, he served as a Detective Sergeant in the New York City Police Department. He was one of the oldest living members of the Shomrim Society, which is the Jewish Policeman’s Fraternal Organization.

As “Shomrim” means “watcher” or “guard” in Hebrew, Teddy lived his life as a watcher and guard of Jewish belief systems and values. At home, Teddy served as the

President of the Suffolk Jewish Center; Religious Practices Chairman of the Congregation Beth Sholom, Babylon; Fundraising Chairman for the Congregation Beth Sholom, Babylon; and longtime member and advocate of Beth Israel Synagogue in Oranjestad, Aruba.”

“Teddy lived his life as both a Watcher and a Guard of all, and especially Jewish belief systems and values. He instilled in many, by example, how one must provide for the continuation of the process and the need to support Jewish houses of worship whether they are Conservative or Lubavitch.

“Throughout his life, Teddy maintained the mantra that his middle initial, “I,” implied that he “I” will always support any charity, Jewish cause, or house of worship, that “I” can.”

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Babylon and Huntington residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Spring 2025 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.

“It is so important for us to provide our senior citizens with the assistance and information they need in ways that are most convenient to them. These visits allow our seniors to connect with our County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage of this opportunity.”

They also can provide information on Medicare, answer questions and make recommendations and referrals. For more information about available services or directions to any of these locations, please call the Suffolk County Office for the Aging at (631) 853-8200.
