PEER CONNECTIONS SUPPORT MIDDLE SCHOOL TRANSITION

Peer Connections Support Middle School Transition

When sixth graders arrive at Seaford Middle School in September, they will be ready to hit the ground running. A revamped orientation program is connecting the incoming students with the school’s experts.

Fifth graders from Seaford Harbor Elementary School arrived on May 28, followed by their

peers from Seaford Manor Elementary School on May 29. The future middle schoolers were in groups of 10, and taken on tours of the building by three or four eighth graders from the National Junior Honor Society. They saw important locations such as the main office, student support services suite, gymnasium, music rooms

and library.

Principal Dr. Raphael Morey welcomed the fifth graders and gave a quick overview of the middle school before the tours began. Upon returning to the cafeteria, the elementary students then had time to meet with the eighth graders and have their individual questions answered.

Eighth grader Samantha Richardson, a National Junior Honor Society member who gave tours when Harbor students visited, said the orientation program was mutually beneficial.

“I think it’s a great experience for the fifth graders,” she said, “as well as for us to learn leadership skills. Middle school is not

a scary place, and a good tour guide can make it much more welcoming.”

Over the summer, the incoming students will return for an orientation program with a session for each sixth grade team.

Dr. Morey said that having them come in as groups of 40-50 students at a time, instead of the entire grade, will make it a more

personal experience.

“We want them to be comfortable with the notion of coming to middle school,” he said. “The transition between fifth and sixth grade is a big one, and it can be a little nervewracking, so we want them to know there is a family feel here.”

PSEG Long Island’s Fifth Annual Power To Feed Long Island Food Collection Drive Is Coming To A Town Near You Community Invited To Donate Online At

Across Long Island From June Through September

PSEG Long Island is energized to announce details of its fifth annual Power to Feed Long Island food drive initiative and invites Long Islanders to make a donation to support their neighbors.

Beginning June 13 in Massapequa, PSEG Long Island will set up collection bins at eight different Stop & Shop supermarkets on eight different Fridays through the summer. The annual collection campaign supports Island Harvest Food Bank’s mission to feed neighbors facing food insecurity.

Hundreds of thousands of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout the year. During the summer months, there is a significant reduction in food donations to local food banks, pantries and other programs. Compounding the issue, children are not in school where they can receive free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch.

Enter PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island. Between June 13 and the end of September, PSEG Long Island will set up collection boxes at eight Stop & Shop supermarket locations across Long Island (schedule is below) where community members can donate nonperishable food and essential personal care needs. The items collected at these drives will be distributed to families through local soup kitchens, nourishment centers, food pantries and other outreach programs in the neighborhood.

Over the past four years, Long Islanders have supported PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island events by donating the equivalent of 130,000 meals to help people in their communities struggling to feed their families.

“As we celebrate the fifth year of PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island, we thank the generous Long Islanders who have opened their hearts and wallets to help their neighbors in need each year,” said David Lyons, interim president and COO, PSEG Long Island. “There is hunger in every ZIP code on Long Island, and PSEG Long Island is energized to partner with Island Harvest and Stop & Shop once again to help families in our communities who need it, especially during the difficult summer months.”

“PSEG Long Island has long been a valued partner with us on the frontlines in our mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO, Island Harvest Food Bank. “The generous support from PSEG Long Island, Stop & Shop, and their customers is not just a lifeline, but a beacon of hope for

our neighbors who may be a paycheck away from not being able to provide for themselves and their families a basic human right, like food.”

“As a leading grocery retailer on Long Island, we understand the critical role we play in fighting hunger in our communities,” said Daniel Wolk, external communications manager at Stop & Shop.

“We are proud to once again welcome PSEG Long Island and Island Harvest to our stores this summer for the Power to Feed Long Island food drive. With food banks facing increasing demand, we are deeply committed to supporting Island Harvest’s mission to end hunger across Nassau and Suffolk counties.”

As a thank you to customers who make onsite donations, PSEG Long Island volunteers will be providing contributors free LED lightbulbs and reusable shopping bags. Representatives from PSEG Long Island will be available at each location to provide information on financial programs and money-saving energy efficiency options. Island Harvest Food Bank personnel will be in attendance to share information on its hunger relief programs.

What to donate:

Island Harvest requests specific items, including:

Nonperishable food: Healthy varieties of canned foods, such as low-sodium beans, vegetables, soups, pasta sauces and tomato varieties, tuna and chicken, rice, pasta, nut butters, olive and canola oil, spices and pet food (no glass containers please).

Household essentials: Toilet paper, paper towels, hand sanitizer, laundry detergent and dish soap.

Personal care items: Toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner, feminine care products and shaving products, antibacterial wipes and washcloths.

Baby care items: Diapers, wipes, formula, creams, ointments and baby wash.

Cash or online monetary donations: Island Harvest estimates each dollar donated provides roughly two meals.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Pecan-Stuffed Pork Chops

Families celebrate Dad in unique ways on Father’s Day. Gifts are customary, but so is a delicious meal Dad will love. Many dads will appreciate a meal that goes above and beyond the ordinary, preferably something that is hearty and delicious. These “Pecan-Stuffed Pork Chops” from “Jon Bonnell’s Texas Favorites” (Gibbs Smith) are a great dish to serve family style when everyone gathers around the table for Father’s Day.

Serves 7-8

1 large rack of pork chops, bones in

4 tablespoons butter

1⁄2 yellow onion, chopped

2 ribs celery, chopped

5 cloves garlic, minced

1 1⁄2 cups chicken stock

DIRECTIONS:

Clean the rack of pork well and cut in between the bones to get thick individual pork chops. Cut a large slit down the back side of each chop and insert the tip of a knife 2 to 3 inches inside the chop to create a pocket for the stuffing. Do not poke completely through the pork or the stuffing will not stay in. In a large saucepan, melt the butter and sauté the onion, celery and garlic until the onion has slightly softened. Add the chicken stock, salt and cayenne and bring to a light simmer. Pour the contents into a mixing bowl and

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1⁄4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

2 cups panko bread crumbs

2 cups

2 cups roasted pecans, chopped

More kosher salt and pepper, to taste

add the panko bread crumbs and pecans. Mix together and let cool to room temperature. Stuff as much of the mixture into each pork chop as will fit (overstuffing is okay, too). Sprinkle both sides of each chop with salt and pepper to taste, then roast in a preheated 400 F oven for 12 minutes. Turn the chops over once and roast an additional 15 minutes. Check for doneness with a meat thermometer. Cook to medium, or 135 to 140 F.

Councilman Imbroto Urges Residents To Give The Gift Of Life By Donating Blood

With hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto invites residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Tuesday, June 17th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

Councilman Imbroto stated, “Blood supplies are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many people as possible can be helped. Together, we can give the gift of life though a simple blood donation.”

Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past three months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy Queen.

Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. Donating blood at the Hicksville Athletic Center, is an incredible way for all of us to pitch in and give back, to help ease the burden of our Healthcare Heroes as they continue to provide lifesaving efforts.”

Volunteer Opportunity To Help Terrapin Turtles Survive

June 14th Survival Day Includes Beach Cleanup

In an effort to help Terrapin turtles survive predators, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Andrew Monteleone announces that the Town and Friends of the Bay are co-hosting a Terrapin Survival and Beach Cleanup Day on Saturday, June 14th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Centre Island Beach in Bayville.

“The Town of Oyster Bay joined forces with Friends of the Bay to launch ‘Team Terrapin,’ to help protect the Diamondback Terrapin turtle, as this small species

lives in fresh or brackish waters in our Town,” said Councilman Monteleone.

“These turtles, which have distinctive diamondshaped rings covering their shells, have a nearthreatened conservation status and we are working with our environmental partners and local volunteers to help protect this vulnerable species.”

During this Terrapin Survival and Beach Cleanup Day, volunteers will be trained to identify signs of nesting terrapins, briefed on how to collect

data and how to deploy protective cages around nests. These structures keep natural predators like raccoons and fox away from the terrapins, thus contributing to their survival. The event features a beach cleanup and tours of nesting sites.

Terrapin monitoring will take place for four to six weeks after the event and Team Terrapin volunteers will be encouraged to sign up for half-hour or one-hour monitoring shifts during weekdays and weekends. This is an

excellent citizen science opportunity for people of all ages. Community service hours and certificates of participation will be provided upon request.

Terrapins can be found along the northern shore of Oyster Bay, especially at Centre Island Beach, with a large population at the head of Mill Neck Creek near Beaver Dam.

To register for the event, volunteers should visit www.oysterbaytown.com/ volunteerform. For more information, please email info@friendsofthebay.org
