2026 JONES BEACH BANDSHELL SUMMER CONCERT

The New York State Ofﬁce of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation is thrilled to announce the 2026 Bandshell Summer Concert Series at Jones Beach State Park! The Bandshell hosts free events at the Field 4 Boardwalk. This event is our way to get people to sing, dance, and laugh with friends and family at the beach. Every night through September 6th (excluding July 1st –July 6th) we have programming for everyone to enjoy. This program is sponsored by the Natural Heritage Trust, WBAB 102.3 and WBLI 106.1 Radio Stations. Seaford Public Library is proud to present its “America 250 at the Library” celebration series, a summerlong lineup of educational and community-centered programs commemorating the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.

America 250, also known as the Semiquincentennial, marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Through literature, crafts, historical discussions, and family activities, the Seaford Public Library hopes to bring residents together to celebrate the American spirit while exploring the people, stories, and events that helped shape the nation.

The library’s America 250 event lineup includes programs for children, teens, and adults throughout the summer:

• July 8th — Children’s Program: Paint the USA from 1:15 PM–2:15 PM

Repeat Customers

Small business owners no doubt recognize the value of repeat customers, but few may recognize just how valuable such customers can be to their bottom lines. A study from researchers at Harvard Business School found that a customer’s eighth purchase was an average of 80 percent higher than his or her first purchase. In addition, a survey from the strategic planning, marketing and sales consultants Altfeld, Inc. found that the probability of selling to an existing customer is between 60 and 70 percent, while that probability shrinks to as low as 5 percent for new customers. Customer retention strategies like offering superior customer service and seeking input from customers can help small businesses generate more repeat customers, which can greatly improve their chances for long-term success.

Names like John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and, of course, John Hancock might instantly come to mind when pondering the men who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776. But what about the remaining signatories to the founding document of the United States? According to the National Archives, 56 men signed the Declaration of Independence, and even historians and armchair history buffs might be hard pressed to name all 56 signers of the pivotal document. Some might even be surprised to learn that various notable figures from the era were not among the 56 signers on the Declaration of Independence, a list that includes Alexander Hamilton, John Jay and George Washington. George Mason, another influential figure of the era, also decided against signing the Declaration of Independence, citing its lack of a “Bill of Rights” as motivation for keeping his pen to himself.

His name might not have been the inspiration for America’s capital city, a state in the Pacific Northwest or countless locales across the nation, but Thomas Paine was a hugely influential figure in the formation of the United States. Born in England in 1737, Paine moved to Philadelphia in the early 1770s and soon wrote the pamphlet, Common Sense. According to the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, Paine argued against the British colonial system, asserting it was rooted in tyranny directed by the aristocracy and monarchy. That assessment led Paine to contend the colonies should sever their ties to England and establish a democratic government. The success of Paine’s work is due to various factors, including his writing style, which was clear and simple and thus digestible to the masses, a reader-friendly tone that many historians have noted helped to generate enthusiasm for the notion that the colonies should break apart from the British Empire. The Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The Library of Congress notes that marked an official announcement of the colonies’ separation from Great Britain, but it would be awhile before celebrating American independence on July 4 became commonplace. According to the LOC, it was not until the conclusion of the War of 1812 that festivities celebrating American independence became the norm. Curiously, even though the War of 1812 officially concluded in 1815, Congress did not pass a law making Independence Day a federal holiday until 1870. Since then, Americans have celebrated July 4 in numerous ways. Backyard barbecues and community fireworks displays are popular ways to celebrate the holiday. Some even experience life-changing moments on July 4, when the country still holds naturalization ceremonies at which many individuals officially become U.S. citizens.
