Parents who want to encourage their children to volunteer may find their efforts at doing so are more convincing if they volunteer themselves. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Adolescence examined the effects that parents who volunteer and talk about volunteering have on children. Researchers found that the children of volunteers were 27 percent more likely to volunteer than children whose parents did not volunteer. In addition, adolescents were 47 percent more likely to volunteer when their parents volunteered and talked about volunteering with their children.

The AFA Barbara Rabinowitz Education & Resource Center invites Long Island seniors to “Yoga in the Garden,” a free outdoor wellness program designed to promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Legislator Renna Recognizes Page Program Graduate Rebecca Glover
On Tuesday, July 14, Legislator RJ Renna and the Suffolk County Legislature recognized participants of the 2026 Suffolk County Legislative Page Program during a ceremony at the Maxine Y. Postal Auditorium at the Riverhead County Center.
The Legislative Page Program provides students with an opportunity to gain firsthand experience in county government by working alongside legislators and county staff. Participants assist with constituent services, legislative research, and administrative responsibilities while also taking part in careerbuilding workshops, leadership training, and a mock legislative session where they debate real legislative issues.
Representing Legislator Renna’s 14th Legislative District was Rebecca Glover
of Lindenhurst, a student at Stony Brook University pursuing a double major in Political Science and
Economics with a minor in Journalism. She also serves as Vice President of the PreLaw Society and Treasurer of
Phi Alpha Delta.
During her 12-week internship, Rebecca assisted with constituent services, legislative research, answering phones, and welcoming new voters to the district. She also worked closely with Legislator Renna to design a new emblem for the 14th Legislative District after researching the history and unique character of its communities. In addition, she helped organize a video series highlighting Suffolk County government and its departments, which is expected to be released later this year.
“Rebecca is passionate about public service,” said Legislator Renna. “In just twelve weeks, she made a lasting impact on Suffolk County and the 14th Legislative District. I have no doubt she will become a leader in our community in the near future.”

How Reading Builds Young Children’s Vocabulary
A study from The Ohio State University found large differences in word exposure based on how often young children are read to. Children whose parents read them five books a day heard about 1.48 million words before kindergarten, compared with just over 4,600 words for children who were never read to. Even daily reading resulted in far fewer words than reading multiple books a day. Beyond vocabulary growth, reading supports children’s communication skills, empathy, literacy, and understanding of the world.
One study also noted the effects that reading to young children can have on the relationship between parent and child. That study, authored by researchers at the University of Wollongong in Australia and Boston University and published in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood, found that reading to young children supports a strong relationship between parent and child.

The Town of Babylon officially celebrated the grand opening of the newly reconstructed Bob “Captain Kangaroo” Keeshan Tot Lot at Town Hall, cutting the ribbon on a state-of-theart playground designed to provide children of all abilities with a safe, welcoming place to play.
The new playground replaces a structure that served the community for nearly two decades and was designed with accessibility and inclusion at the forefront. Featuring innovative play equipment and sensory-rich experiences for children of all ages and developmental abilities, the playground ensures more families can enjoy the space together.
Supervisor Rich Schaffer said the project reflects the Town’s continued commitment to investing in parks and creating opportunities for every child.
“This new playground reflects the Town of
Babylon’s commitment to ensuring every child has a place to play, grow and feel included,” Schaffer said.
“We’re proud to invest in projects that strengthen our neighborhoods and improve the quality of life for our residents. Thanks to
Governor Kathy Hochul’s support and a $1 million New York State grant, we’ve transformed this beloved playground into a destination where families will create memories for generations to come.”
Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, chairman of the Town Board’s Parks & Recreation Committee, said the new facility represents a significant investment in the Town’s future.
“This playground is about making sure every child has the opportunity to play, explore and create lasting memories,” Martinez said. “We’re grateful to Governor Hochul for helping make this project possible through $1 million in New York
State funding. Her support has allowed us to replace a 20-year-old playground with a truly inclusive space, and we’re proud to bring this incredible new amenity to the families of the Town of Babylon.”
Councilman Terence McSweeney said the project holds special significance for him.
“Growing up with family members who had disabilities gave me an early understanding that everyone deserves the same opportunities to enjoy life’s simple moments,” McSweeney said. “Today’s ribbon-cutting means a great deal to me because this playground was built so more children—regardless of their abilities—can play together, laugh together and make memories together. That’s what a truly inclusive community looks like, and I’m proud that the Town of Babylon is making that vision a reality.”

the ceremony were Thalia Olaya, Suffolk County regional representative for Governor Kathy Hochul, Assemblyman Kwani B. O’Pharrow, and representatives from Green Velvet Landscaping Inc., which constructed the new playground.
More than simply replacing aging equipment, the Bob “Captain Kangaroo” Keeshan Tot Lot represents the Town’s ongoing investment in its parks, families and quality of life.
By creating a space where
