Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recently recognized Chase Miller, a senior at West Islip High School, on achieving Eagle Scout with Troop 95 at his Eagle Court of Honor at West Islip Church of Christ. Chase’s Service Project, earning him Eagle Scout status, was leading the creation of a large storage shed for a Veteran who has been aided by United Veterans Beacon House in Bay Shore. He raised $4,000 through donations and fundraising to complete the project.
These two moms opened a spa. It had one big, beautiful effect on the community.
Mery and Sindy always knew they wanted to open a spa to bring beauty to customers. Little did they know it would have the same effect on the community. And Business First was there. We provided $23,000 in grants to help with much-needed renovations so Mery and Sindy could bring their vision to life.* Now, not only does their spa impact clients in a beautiful way, it gives the community an economic lift as well.

A Hot Breakfast For A Relaxed Weekend Mornings
A hot breakfast can be just what the doctor ordered on weekends. Weekday mornings
might be too hectic to whip up a hot breakfast, but that’s often not the case come Saturday
and Sunday. For those with time to cook breakfast over the weekend, this recipe for a “Peasant Omelet” from Lines+Angles is delicious and simple to prepare.
Peasant Omelet
Makes 1 serving
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 small potato, peeled and chopped into small pieces
1 clove minced garlic, peeled and minced
2 slices cooked ham, cut into bite-size pieces
2 teaspoons fresh parsley, finely chopped, plus extra for garnish
1 tablespoon butter
2 tablespoons milk
3 fresh eggs
Salt, to taste
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1 pickle, sliced lengthwise (optional)
DIRECTIONS:
1. Heat the oil in a skillet set over medium-high heat. Add the chopped potatoes and saute until almost fork tender. Add the garlic and continue cooking until the potatoes are tender. Add ham and fresh parsley, stirring until heated through. Remove from heat and cover to keep warm.
2. Melt butter in an omelet pan or saute pan. Beat milk and eggs together. Pour egg mixture into the omelet pan. Cook over medium heat, gently move the eggs by sliding a spatula under the eggs, to promote even cooking. Cook until eggs are set.
3. Slide cooked omelet onto plate. Season with freshly ground black pepper and top with potato and ham mixture. Garnish with fresh parsley and sliced pickle. Serve immediately.

Watermelon is a summertime staple. Each summer, stores and farm stands have an abundance of watermelons on display, and many people feel no picnic or barbecue is complete without watermelon.
Watermelon is a refreshing option on hot days. It’s ideal sliced and served, or can be included in fruit salads, smoothies, or even “spiked” cocktails. The key to a tasty watermelon is knowing how to pick one that is ripe while serving watermelon comes down to
Tips For Picking And Cutting Watermelon
understanding some easycutting strategies.
• Choose a watermelon that has a firm, symmetrical shape. Avoid melons with bumps, dents, or cuts.
• Watermelons should be relatively heavy. They’re 92 percent water, and that juiciness should be reflected in a substantial weight for the melon’s size.
• Watermelon.org advises looking for a creamy yellow spot on the underside of the watermelon. This is
called the “ground spot.” It indicates where the melon sat on the ground and ripened in the sun. Once cut from the vine, a watermelon has about three to four weeks to be consumed.
• All parts of the watermelon are edible, including the seeds and rind. The rind can be pickled or cut up to use in stir-fry dishes. When bringing watermelon to an event, it is a courtesy to bring it already sliced or cut up. This ensures the host or hostess does not have to tackle what can sometimes be a chore. Here are three techniques to cut a watermelon easily: Cubes
1. Cut both ends off of the watermelon.
2. Stand the watermelon on one sliced end. Use the knife to slice down and cut off the rind.
3. After removing the
rind from all sides of the melon, cut into discs about 1⁄2-inch in thickness.
4. Then cut those discs into cubes.
Slices
1. Cut the watermelon in half lengthwise.
2. Take one cut half and
Fresh Ingredients Are Perfect For Summertime
Fresh ingredients can be components of a flavorful meal. Come the warmer weather, fresh ingredients also can help people avoid feeling sluggish after eating. This summer, fresh ingredients like avocado and tomatoes can be just what people need when looking for a delicious meal that won’t adversely affect their energy levels. The following recipe for “Bruschetta Topped With Avocado and Tomatoes” from Lines+Angles employs both foods and can make a great addition to any summertime dinner table.
Bruschetta Topped With Avocado And Tomatoes
Makes 4 to 6 servings
2 large Hass avocados, ripe, pitted, peeled, and cubed
4 vine tomatoes, cored, seeded, and diced
1 shallot, finely chopped
8 ounces fresh mozzarella, drained and diced
2 to 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
2 to 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus extra for brushing
1 large baguette, cut into 1-inch thick slices
1 small bunch basil, leaves only, finely sliced
Kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Directions:
1. Combine the cubed avocado with the tomato, shallot, mozzarella, balsamic vinegar, extra-virgin olive oil, and plenty of seasoning in a mixing bowl.
2. Stir and toss to combine, adding more vinegar and extra-virgin olive oil as needed. Set aside until needed.
3. Preheat the broiler to hot. Lightly brush the baguette slices with olive oil before toasting under the broiler for 1 to 2 minutes until golden brown.
4. Remove bread slices and leave to cool briefly. Carefully spoon the avocado bruschetta mix on top and serve with a garnish of sliced basil on top.
place it cut-side down.
3. Cut the watermelon into slices.
4. Repeat for the other cut half.
Strips
1. Cut the watermelon as you would with the slices. Rather than leaving it in large slices,
turn the watermelon and cut the same size slices in the opposite direction. This creates strips that are easy for kids to grab and maneuver.
2. Repeat with the other half of the watermelon in the same manner.

Ice Cream Is A Wildly Popular Dessert
Ice cream is a wildly popular dessert, with an estimated 15.4 billion liters of ice cream consumed each year around the world, according to the World Atlas. New Zealand consumes more ice cream than any other country, followed by the United States. When it comes to ice cream flavors, the International Dairy Foods Association says vanilla is still America’s favorite flavor, followed by the others of the “Big Three”: chocolate and strawberry. Butter pecan and cookie dough round out the top five flavors in the United States. Vanilla reigns supreme worldwide as well. Forty-six countries choose vanilla over other options according to research conducted by Premier Inn, a United Kingdom-based hotel chain. Worldwide, neapolitan and chocolate also are popular ice cream flavors.
Hope For The Warriors, Robert Half To Host Virtual Career Workshop For Military Community
In honor of National Hire a Veteran Day, Hope For The Warriors will host a free virtual career workshop on July 23 with Robert Half to help veterans, service members, and military spouses navigate the civilian job market.
The second workshop of a four-part series, National Hire a Veteran Day, Employer Spotlight Panel, will be hosted on Thursday, July 23, at 11 a.m. EST.
Led by career coaches from Hope For The Warriors and Robert Half, the goal of the interactive workshop is to encourage participant discussion and to discuss the skills civilian companies seek in veteran candidates, how veterans can stand out in a competitive job market, common misconceptions — and how to overcome them.
Representatives from Forward Air, Caliber-Inc., and S&P Global. Employers and more will be on hand to provide hiring and recruiting perspectives as part of the conversation.
Discussion topics may also include:
RENTING? Place your ad in the Classifieds 631-226-2636 Ext. 276
• What employers look for when hiring veterans and military spouses
• Translating military experience into civilian language
• Resume and applicant tracking system best practices
• Interview strategies
• Networking and building professional relationships
• AI in today’s job search
• Common hiring misconceptions
• Career readiness and standing out in a competitive job market
During registration, participants are invited to submit career and employment questions. The session is intended to be conversational rather than presentation-based, allowing attendees to engage directly with Hope For The Warriors, Robert
Half, and participating employer representatives.
As a part of Hope For The Warriors’ Warriors’ Compass transition program, the free, virtual career workshop series provides training to help prepare those in the military landscape for a job search in today’s civilian climate. The workshops offer tools and tips, as well as opportunities to network with other service members, military spouses, and companies committed to hiring those with military backgrounds.
“The National Hire a Veteran Day, Employer Spotlight Panel workshop gives members of the military community direct access to an interactive discussion with employers who understand the value of military experience and can speak to what companies are looking for in today’s hiring environment,” said Brian Papakie, director of transition services and life roles for Hope For The Warriors and a retired U.S. Marine. As the nation celebrates 250 years of military service and sacrifice, National Hire a Veteran Day provides a meaningful opportunity to recognize the continued contributions veterans make to today’s workforce and to encourage employers and job
seekers to engage in open dialogue about successful career transitions.
Hope For The Warriors and Robert Half will host two more free workshops in 2026: Thursday, Sept. 17, will discuss applicant tracking systems and how to get seen; and Thursday, Nov. 19, will cover salary negotiation and compensation confidence.
To register for the free, virtual career workshops, visit hopeforthewarriors.org.

Hydrating Is Key In Summer Heat
Summer is a season to enjoy some fun in the sun, but it's imperative that people remember to take steps to reduce their risk for heat illness. Those measures should include efforts to hydrate and remain hydrated throughout the day. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that water will almost always help people remain hydrated even when they're working in the heat. But food also plays a vital role in preventing heat illness, as the CDC notes eating regular meals can help to replace the salt lost through sweat. It's also important that individuals avoid energy drinks and alcohol when spending time in the hot summer sun. Many energy drinks contain more caffeine than standard servings of coffee, tea and soft drinks, and excessive caffeine consumption can contribute to dehydration. The same can be said for alcohol, and the CDC reports that consuming alcohol within 24 hours of working in the heat can increase the risk of heat illness.
