Town Unveils Historical Marker
Free Child ID Card Program
As part of the Town of Oyster Bay’s celebration commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States, Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board unveiled a new historical marker at Fort Hill, the final resting place of Robert Townsend, the Revolutionary War patriot known as “Culper Jr.” and one of General George Washington’s most trusted intelligence operatives. The marker commemorates both the Townsend family’s enduring contributions to American history and Oyster Bay’s important role in the nation’s founding.
“America’s fight for independence was won not only on battlefields, but through courage, sacrifice and intelligence gathering,” said Supervisor Saladino.
“Robert Townsend risked everything to provide General Washington with critical information that helped secure victory in the Revolutionary War.
As celebrate America’s 250th birthday, it is fitting that we honor one of Oyster Bay’s greatest
patriots and preserve his remarkable story for future generations.”
Established in 1668, Fort Hill began as a private burial ground for the Townsend family. John Townsend and his brother Henry Townsend were signers of the Flushing Remonstrance of 1657, a landmark petition advocating religious freedom and one of the earliest expressions of religious liberty in colonial America. After facing persecution under Dutch Governor Peter Stuyvesant, the family relocated to Oyster Bay in search of greater freedom.
More than a century later, Robert Townsend would play a pivotal role in the American Revolution.
Operating under the alias “Culper Jr.” as part of Washington’s famed Culper Spy Ring, Townsend gathered valuable intelligence from Britishoccupied New York City. His reports were secretly transmitted through a network of couriers and whaleboats, ultimately reaching Washington’s headquarters and helping shape military strategy
during the war.
Following his father’s death in 1790, Townsend returned to the family home, now known as Raynham Hall Museum, where he lived until his death in 1838. His identity as Washington’s secret agent remained hidden for nearly a century until historian Morton Pennypacker uncovered the truth in 1930.
“The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to preserve and share the stories of the individuals who helped shape our nation,” added Town Clerk Richard LaMarca. “This marker will serve as a lasting tribute to Robert Townsend’s patriotism and remind visitors that Oyster Bay played a significant role in America’s struggle for independence.”

The program is free and open to Nassau County residents only. The ID cards will be produced on site and available in minutes. When a child goes missing, every moment is precious. “Yoga In The Garden” Free Outdoor Wellness Program Promotes Physical and Cognitive Health
The AFA Barbara Rabinowitz Education & Resource Center invites Long Island seniors to “Yoga in the Garden,” a free outdoor wellness program designed to promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The event takes place at
the Center (149 Schleigel Boulevard, Amityville) on July 30 at 11 am. Those wishing to participate should register by calling the Center at 631-223-4000. No prior yoga experience is needed.
Participants in this hourlong program will perform a variety of simple, seated yoga poses and stretches as shown by the instructor. Seated yoga offers a safe and accessible way to encourage movement, increase body awareness, and foster social engagement.
Yoga is widely recognized for its many health benefits. Regular practice can help reduce stress, improve flexibility and balance, strengthen muscles, enhance posture, and encourage relaxation. Deep breathing and mindful movement may also support improved mood, better sleep, and overall well-being.

Urges Residents To Give The Gift Of Life By Donating Blood On August 13th
With hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh invites residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Thursday, August 13th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Town Hall North, located at 54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay.
Councilwoman Walsh stated, “Blood supplies are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this Blood Drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many people as possible can be helped. Together, we can give the gift of life though a simple blood donation.”
Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past three months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. All donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy Queen, and donors who enter their email addresses will receive two free New York Islanders
tickets via email one week after the donation drive.
Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. Donating blood is an incredible way for all of us to pitch in and give back, to help ease the burden of our Healthcare Heroes as they continue to provide lifesaving efforts.”

Massapequa Kiwanis Hosts Annual Golf Fundraiser
The Massapequa Kiwanis Club held its annual Golf Outing on Monday, June 8, at the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course in Woodbury. The event, which serves as the club’s primary fundraising effort each year, brought together golfers, sponsors, and community supporters for a day of friendly competition and fellowship.
Participants enjoyed excellent weather throughout the outing, helping to make the event a tremendous success. Funds raised will support the Massapequa Kiwanis Club’s ongoing efforts to serve local children, families, and community programs.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand announce the Town’s S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) and Homeowners Cleanup Days for this summer, with dates scheduled for weekends in July and August. Residents can drop off materials at the Old Bethpage Solid Waste Disposal Complex, located at 101 Bethpage-Sweet Hollow Road in Old Bethpage. S.T.O.P. program - Saturday, August 8th from 9am – 4pm: collects various hazardous materials, including: asbestos material (double bagged); automobile batteries; automobile tires (with or without rims); brake and transmission fluids; drain and oven cleaners; fire extinguishers; fares; fluorescent bulbs; gasoline; pesticides and insecticides; oil-based and latex paint; outdoor gas grill propane tanks; photo chemicals; rechargeable and button batteries; small aerosol cans; smoke detectors; solvents; spot removers; thermostats; waste motor oil and antifreeze;
and wood preservatives.
“Improperly disposing of products such as waste oil, oven cleaner or paint thinner could contaminate your water supply,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Anything poured on the ground or put into cesspools, storm drains, or recharge systems can work its way down to the aquifer or our waterways.”
Homeowners Cleanup Day – Saturday, July 25th & Saturday, August 22nd from 8:30am – 4pm: collects non-hazardous waste only, including: air conditioners; all e-waste; campers; boats and boat trailers (proof of ownership required - oil, gas, other fluids and batteries removed); clean, broken concrete; large metal items; propane tanks and propane torches; tires; and yard waste.
“With the start of spring, many residents begin to clean out their yards and may have large amounts of yard waste and other non-hazardous debris to dispose,” said
Councilman Hand. “Residents can bring items such as used tires, fence posts, clean broken concrete or yard waste to our Homeowners Cleanup.”
Free Paper Shredding Services - Saturday, July 25th & Saturday, August 22nd from 8:30am – 4pm: provides residents an opportunity to destroy unwanted documents in a safe and secure manner. Residents only, no businesses, can bring up to four bankers’ boxes of paper to the shredding program.
