Town of Babylon Celebrates Opening of Inclusive Playground
The Town of Babylon officially celebrated the grand opening of the newly reconstructed Bob “Captain Kangaroo” Keeshan Tot Lot at Town Hall, cutting the ribbon on a state-of-theart playground designed to provide children of all abilities with a safe, welcoming place to play.
The new playground replaces a structure that served the community for nearly two decades and was designed with accessibility and inclusion at the forefront. Featuring innovative play equipment and sensory-rich experiences for children of all ages and developmental abilities, the playground ensures more families can enjoy the space together.
Supervisor Rich Schaffer said the project reflects the Town’s continued commitment to investing in parks and creating opportunities for every child.
“This new playground reflects the Town of
Babylon’s commitment to ensuring every child has a place to play, grow and feel included,” Schaffer said.
“We’re proud to invest in projects that strengthen our neighborhoods and improve the quality of life for our residents. Thanks to Governor Kathy Hochul’s support and a $1 million New York State grant, we’ve transformed this beloved playground into a destination where families will create memories for generations to come.”
Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, chairman of the Town Board’s Parks & Recreation Committee, said the new facility represents a significant investment in the Town’s future.
“This playground is about making sure every child has the opportunity to play, explore and create lasting memories,” Martinez said. “We’re grateful to Governor Hochul for helping make this project possible through $1 million in New York
State funding. Her support has allowed us to replace a 20-year-old playground with a truly inclusive space, and we’re proud to bring this incredible new amenity to the families of the Town of Babylon.”
Councilman Terence McSweeney said the project holds special significance for him.
“Growing up with family members who had disabilities gave me an early understanding that everyone deserves the same opportunities to enjoy life’s simple moments,” McSweeney said. “Today’s ribbon-cutting means a great deal to me because this playground was built so more children—regardless of their abilities—can play together, laugh together and make memories together. That’s what a truly inclusive community looks like, and I’m proud that the Town of Babylon is making that vision a reality.”

the ceremony were Thalia Olaya, Suffolk County regional representative for Governor Kathy Hochul, Assemblyman Kwani B. O’Pharrow, and representatives from Green Velvet Landscaping Inc., which constructed the new playground.
More than simply replacing aging equipment, the Bob “Captain Kangaroo” Keeshan Tot Lot represents the Town’s ongoing investment in its parks, families and quality of life. By creating a space where

Signature Cares Launches “Build A Backpack” School Supply Drive To Benefit Fiercely Leading Youth, Inc.
Signature Premier Properties’ community giving initiative, Signature Cares, is collecting school supplies for its “Build A Backpack” drive. The initiative benefits Fiercely Leading Youth, Inc., a Bay Shore-based 501(c) (3) nonprofit dedicated to inspiring, empowering, and educating at-risk youth to become successful, productive contributors to society.
Signature Cares is asking the community to donate unfilled backpacks, notebooks, folders, writing and art supplies, and other classroom essentials before students head back to school this fall. Requested items include unfilled backpacks, lunch bags, pencils, pens, erasers, pencil boxes, colored pencils, crayons, markers, highlighters, rulers, spiral and composition notebooks, loose leaf paper, tabbed
dividers, scissors, glue sticks, tape, folders, threering binders, index cards, compasses, book covers, tissues, hand sanitizer, and combination locks.

Town Of Babylon To Host 19th Annual Babylon Soldier Ride
The Town of Babylon will host its 19th Annual Babylon Soldier Ride on Thursday, July 23, beginning with a special opening ceremony at 9 a.m. at Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst.
The ceremony will honor the wounded veterans participating in the ride and recognize the community members, organizations, and supporters who have helped make the annual event a success. Town officials, representatives from the Wounded Warrior Project, and local community leaders will offer remarks before the
riders begin their journey.
A highlight of this year’s ceremony will be the presentation of more than $200,000 to the Wounded Warrior Project—the largest donation in the history of the Babylon Soldier Ride. The event will also recognize the ride’s top fundraisers and include a blessing of the riders.
For 19 years, the Town of Babylon has proudly partnered with the Wounded Warrior Project to host Babylon Soldier Ride, raising critical funds to support programs and
services for wounded veterans. This year’s event marks a historic milestone, with the Town presenting its largest donation ever— more than $200,000—to the organization. A portion of the proceeds will also benefit SkyHope, a Farmingdalebased nonprofit that provides free air transportation for military personnel, veterans and their families.
Babylon Soldier Ride continues to unite veterans, residents, businesses, first responders, and community organizations in support of those who have sacrificed in service to our nation.

Town Of Babylon Dedicates New Harbor Patrol Safeboat In Honor Of Fallen Bay Constable Richard L. Brooks
The Town of Babylon recently held a dedication ceremony at Tanner Park Marina to officially name its new 31-foot Harbor Patrol Safeboat
The Richard L. Brooks, honoring the memory of a Bay Constable and retired NYPD Lieutenant who was shot and killed in the line of duty in 2004 while serving the Town.
The ceremony was attended by Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Public Safety Commissioner Jerry Gigante, Harbor Master Artie Smith, Sylvia Brooks — widow of Richard L. Brooks — the Brooks family, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly, Suffolk County Legislature Minority Leader Jason Richberg, Amityville Village Mayor Michael O’Neill, representatives from the office of Assemblyman Kwani B. O’Pharrow, and the Town’s Bay Constables.
“His memory will stay alive,” Supervisor Schaffer said. “He truly
loved being on the water, and this dedication is a fitting tribute to a man who gave a lifetime of service — first as a volunteer firefighter in Amityville at just 17 years old, and throughout his entire career in law enforcement.”
Richard Brooks’ son, Richard Jr., expressed gratitude on behalf of the family. “My dad loved the Town of Babylon, loved being on the water — he said being a Bay Constable was his retirement job, and he did it for fun. With this boat, his memory stays alive, and that’s really all we can ask for.”
The vessel was made possible through a U.S. Department of Homeland Security port security grant. The boat’s total cost was approximately $777,000, with the Town securing $588,000 — roughly 80% — in federal funding. Commissioner Gigante noted that the grant was awarded on the Town’s second application after the team refined and resubmitted following an initial rejection.
“You could get a rejection and walk
away from it, but Jerry and his team stood fast,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “Getting it on the second try is considered a significant achievement — it takes many municipalities years to secure this type of funding.”
The Richard L. Brooks represents a major upgrade to the Bay Constables’ aging fleet, which previously consisted of vessels dating back to 1995. The new Safeboat features:

All-weather and offshore operation
Thermal imaging and radiation detection technology
First aid and emergency response equipment
12-person capacity
Highly maneuverable design suited for tightquarters operations
Commissioner Gigante emphasized the critical role the vessel will play in multi-agency water rescues. “On the water, resources are thin.
When there’s a missing
person, an overturned boat, or an emergency, every municipality out there works together — and now we can fully participate in those rescues.”
Harbor Master Artie Smith noted the boat’s versatility, including the ability to operate in ocean conditions and transport patients directly to Good Samaritan University Hospital via the marina waterway if needed.
The Town also announced the recent receipt of a rescue gator, which will operate on Town beaches and provide stretcher transport capability for beachside emergencies.
The dedication came days before one of the busiest boating weekends of the year. The Town of Babylon has worked actively with state partners on boating safety education and licensing requirements, with Bay Constables conducting outreach to residents and young boaters throughout the season.
