Oquenock Plants Tree In Honor Of America 250

In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, students at Oquenock Elementary School in the West Islip Union Free School District participated in the “Planting It Forward to 2276” initiative, creating a lasting symbol of history, community and environmental stewardship.
Presented by Suffolk County Executive Edward
Romaine and Suffolk County Clerk Vincent Puleo, the initiative encourages schools and communities to plant trees that will become part of a living legacy honoring the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Generously donated by the DeCanio Family, Oquenock Elementary School planted a crepe myrtle tree as part of the program. Following
the planting, the tree became part of the Living Legacy Tree Registry, a permanent historical record documenting Suffolk County’s contribution to this milestone celebration.
The project provided students with a meaningful hands-on experience that connected lessons of history, civic pride and environmental responsibility. Through
the planting of each tree, students helped create a legacy that will continue to grow and inspire future generations.
The West Islip School District thanks Suffolk County and the DeCanio Family for providing students with this unique
opportunity to participate in a historic celebration and make a lasting impact on their community.

West Islip’s Class Of 2026 Celebrates Success, New Beginnings
The West Islip High School Class of 2026 celebrated its 69th commencement ceremony on June 26 on the football field, joined by family, friends, faculty, administrators and Board of Education members. Following the national anthem performed by Gavin Pollock, Principal Andrew O’Farrell encouraged graduates to build strong habits and meaningful relationships as they begin the next chapter of their lives. Superintendent Dr. Paul Romanelli urged students to take pride not only in their achievements but also in the perseverance and growth that brought them to graduation. Board of Education President Peter McCann praised the class for its kindness, character and positive impact on the school community.
After recognizing the top 10 academic leaders, valedictorian Anthony DeMaio and salutatorian Dana Shi addressed their classmates. DeMaio reflected on embracing potential through perseverance and the support of family, teachers and mentors, while Shi encouraged graduates to appreciate life's small moments, noting that they often become the most meaningful.
Graduates then crossed the stage to receive their diplomas from Dr. Romanelli, board members and Principal O’Farrell. Class President Kayla Frangoulis delivered the closing remarks, celebrating the lasting friendships and shared impact of the Class of 2026. The ceremony concluded with graduates moving their tassels, tossing their caps into the air, and celebrating with loved ones as the band played "New York, New York."

Parents who want to encourage their children to volunteer may find their efforts at doing so are more convincing if they volunteer themselves. A study published in the Journal of Adolescence examined the effects that parents who volunteer and talk about volunteering have on children. Researchers found that the children of volunteers were 27 percent more likely to volunteer than children whose parents did not volunteer. In addition, adolescents were 47 percent more likely to volunteer when their parents volunteered and talked about volunteering with their children.
