The Patriot Award honors the legacy of five courageous Seaford High School alumni who lost their lives during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Each year, the award recognizes individuals who embody the same values of service, integrity, and selflessness that defined those heroes.
The 2026 Honorary Patriot Award recipients: Dawn Haskell-Carbone, Bob Powell, and Bob Valvano, were also recognized for their meaningful contributions and commitment to the Seaford community. Senator Rhoads congratulated all of this year’s honorees and
thanked the Seaford 9/11 Memorial Committee for continuing to preserve the memory of those lost while celebrating individuals who make a lasting difference through service and leadership.

Seaford Middle School nurse Lauren Timoney will be honored with a School Hero award from the Long Island Coalition Against Bullying.
Two faculty members in the Seaford School District have been recognized for their exceptional commitment to creating safe and inclusive environments for all students. Seaford High School English teacher Kathryn Miedl and Seaford Middle School nurse Lauren Timoney will receive 2026 Long Island School Hero awards.
The accolade is presented by the Long Island Coalition Against Bullying. Ms. Miedl and Ms. Timoney were nominated by members of the Seaford school
community and were selected because they embody the values of kindness, empathy and leadership. Their actions have positively impacted students and colleagues, and inspired others to foster a culture of respect and understanding.
Ms. Miedl, an English language arts teacher in Seaford for three years, says the culture of inclusivity begins in her classroom where she calls students her “coteachers,” because she believes in their voice and responsibility to be a role models and leaders. Each class works together through team-building activities within novel and research units and are constantly in discussion about the real messages that are being delivered through literature about humans and society. By digging deep into texts, her “co-teachers” learn empathy through the lives of the characters they study, and it reminds them how to be a good human being in their own
lives.
“It is an honor to be recognized for this award,” Ms. Miedl said. “I love coming to work here each day and having a space to be creative while exploring stories and different topics with my students. There is no better feeling as an educator to know that your school trusts you to be yourself and believes in what you’re doing for the students, all while supporting you and being available for whatever you need to be successful.”
Ms. Timoney, the middle school nurse for the past five years, say she strives to treat every student, staff member and family with kindness. As a school nurse, she recognizes that people often need someone to listen to and make them feel supported. She aims to create a safe and welcoming space where students feel comfortable coming to her whether for medical care or simply for someone to talk to.
“I am honored and grateful to receive the Long Island School Hero
Award,” Ms. Timoney said. “It means a lot to know that the care and support I provide to students, staff and families is appreciated. This recognition reminds me why I love what I do and motivates me to continue making a positive difference in my school community.”
Ms. Miedel and Ms. Timoney will be recognized along with honorees from other Long Island school districts at a reception on Oct. 19 at The Watermill in Smithtown.

Senator Steve Rhoads is bringing his popular Mobile Office Hour Tour back to communities across Senate District 5, providing residents with additional opportunities to meet directly with their State Senator and receive assistance with state-related issues.
Now in its fourth year, the Mobile Office Hour Tour has become a valued community resource, with Senator Rhoads holding more than three dozen office hours at local libraries
and community locations throughout the district. Due to continued interest and strong participation from residents, additional dates have been added for the summer and fall.
“After three successful years of Mobile Office Hours, I’m excited to bring this program back with even more opportunities for residents to connect directly with me,” said Senator Rhoads. “The response from our community has been tremendous because people appreciate having
a convenient way to share their concerns, ask questions, and get help with state-related issues. Hearing directly from constituents is one of the most important parts of my job, and I look forward to continuing these conversations throughout our district.”
Mobile Office Hours provide constituents with a convenient opportunity to discuss issues affecting their families and neighborhoods, seek assistance with state agencies, and share feedback on matters before the New

Although motorcycle ridership skews heavily toward men, women represent a rapidly growing segment of riders. She was my crossing guard on Merrick Road growing up, guiding generations of children with care and kindness. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Emily is also a pillar of St. Francis de Chantal, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and volunteer. Her life is a shining testament to love, service and community.
Emily was born on April 8, 1926, in Brooklyn, New York. After losing her mother at age 12, she moved in with her sister and went on to build a life rooted in strength, love, and community. She married her husband Peter on February 8, 1948, and together they raised three beautiful children, three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, later settling in Wantagh in 1962.
While Peter served as a New York City detective for 33 years, Emily became a beloved Nassau County crossing guard. For 25 years on Merrick Road, she cared for generations of children, forming lasting connections with families who still remember her warmly today.
As she celebrates her 100th birthday, Emily is deeply grateful for her life, her family, and the Wantagh community. She thanks God for these many blessings and for the years filled with joy and meaningful connections.
