Did You Know? The National Football League (NFL) was formed in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA). The firstever NFL game was played at Triangle Park in Dayton, Ohio, on October 3, 1920. In that contest, the hometown Dayton Triangles defeated the Columbus Panhandles 14-0. Though the Dayton Triangles were eventually purchased by a Brooklyn-based syndicate and relocated to New York as a result of that transaction, the team’s status as the host of the first NFL game continues to pay dividends for residents of the southwestern Ohio city where the franchise ushered in the now wildly popular league. In recognition of the place the city of Dayton holds in NFL history, the NFL Foundation, in partnership with FieldTurf & Vasco, pledged to fund the installment of a new artificial turf at the city’s Kettering Park.

Over the next six months, Hispanic students in seven regional delegations from across New York State will study topics focused on leadership development, civic engagement and democracy. Town Of Babylon Dedicates Field Of Dreams To Presiding Officer McCaffrey During the December 3rd Babylon Town Board Meeting, a resolution was unanimously adopted to rename the Field of Dreams in West Babylon to the “Presiding Officer Kevin J. McCaffrey Field of Dreams.” The Field of Dreams, located to the rear of Our Lady of Grace Church in West Babylon, serves as the middle ground of tremendous prior and future updates to Van Bourgondien County Park sponsored under McCaffrey’s leadership. McCaffrey, who was on hand under the belief that he was going to receive a proclamation marking the end of his term as Legislator, was pleasantly surprised by the gesture, remarking: “The expansion of Van Bourgondien Park, and several improvement projects coordinated between the Town and County at the park, have
been notable highlights of my term as Legislator. I was utterly surprised by this great gesture and cannot thank the entire Babylon team for their ongoing support and partnership. Thank you!” An official statement from the Town of Babylon would go on to further highlight their appreciation
for McCaffrey’s work: “As Presiding Officer McCaffrey concludes his 12-year term in the Suffolk County Legislature, Town Board members reflected on the strong, collaborative relationship the Town has enjoyed with him throughout his time in office. His leadership, accessibility, and consistent
advocacy have helped move countless community projects forward. One of the most significant examples of his commitment to our residents can be seen at Van Bourgondien Park. Under his leadership, the Suffolk County Legislature unanimously approved funding for major improvements, including

North Babylon HS Teacher Receives National Certification North Babylon High School Earth science teacher Betsy Luna has been named a National Board Certified Teacher. The National Board Teacher Certification is an advanced professional certification that challenges teachers to closely examine their practice and impact on student learning. The certification processes, which can take up to five years, requires educators to submit classroom videos, analyze student work and provide written reflections that connect instructional decisions to student outcomes. Ms. Luna has been an Earth science teacher in North Babylon High School for the past 25 years, teaching in the same classroom she was in as a former student. National Board Certification was developed for teachers, by teachers, as a voluntary, advanced teaching credential representing professional

Across New York State, there are 2,456 NBCTs.
Ms. Luna received her certification in Earth and space science, grades 7-12. “The program is incredibly challenging over several years,” she said. “We are examining the practices of education and its impact
on students and their learning. It connects instructional decisions with student outcomes.” Ms. Luna spent much of her research looking at the ENL population and determining their needs and educational
strategies that would work for them specifically. She also conducted research on how home life affects her entire student population. Ms. Luna collected data on students and their families to better understand what they bring to the classroom. “It’s really a deeper level of learning about students and understanding how you can use that data to make you a better practitioner,” she said. “Every child has a different learning style, and I learned to understand how we can use that information to make them more successful.” At North Babylon High School, Ms. Luna is also a part of the Environmental Civics Action Club, Computer Club, Photography Club and e-Sports Club. She is also affiliated with the NASA Climate Research Initiative and the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University.

External Diploma Program The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests.
